Edible Photo Cake Topper

cake4

Since the countdown is on until my boys turn 4 and 5, I’m slowly getting into party planning mode and putting my planning hat on. I’m trying to kick back more this year and not really hyper-plan every detail. So, for now I’m reflecting on what we’ve done for past celebrations, and what they may want this time around, since it inevitably changes as they get older and become more outspoken.  Well, last year on Raef’s actual birthday we did a small cake at home and the one thing he had been asking for was a TOBOT cake. What is Tobot you ask!? Well, Tobot is a Korean version of Transformers…based on KIA model vehicles! Raef discovered Tobot by watching the animated episodes on youtube (in Korean) and he really took a liking to it. Now, since Tobot’s not a big thing in the U.S. – the toys aren’t sold here (I’ve had to order toys online from Korea), it’s not a typical cake design character order at the local bakery. And, that’s what made me discover and try out a “do it yourself” edible photo cake topper.

cake

I found a few images online and created my own custom design using PicMonkey‘s online photo editor. Then, I found a place where I could order my custom cake topper on Amazon. It was super easy, I uploaded my image, they printed it out and sent it to me. There are very specific instructions on how to store it and apply it, but basically, you want to leave it in the plastic packaging until you’re ready to use it. The other thing you will need to get is a cake, which I ordered from my local grocery store bakery, where I requested a smooth buttercream frosting. on an 8″ round. You can order different size photo cake toppers, so those are details you should consider before ordering the image. What I also discovered after the fact, was that I could also have just ordered the image directly through my local grocery store bakery too and they would have applied it.

Anyway, it was pretty simple, I followed the instructions and took great care to peel it off its backing and slowly center and apply to my cake. You want to be careful not to let it dry out and you also don’t want any bumps as you smooth it down. Once you get it in place, you let it set and voila, you have your custom cake. My bakery was also nice enough to give me a small bag of sprinkles to add a little more color to it after I added the image. Anyway, it certainly put a smile on his face and I was glad to be able to give him his Tobot cake!

Party Time + Invitation Options

Screen Shot 2016-07-11 at 11.18.18 AM

My boy’s’ birthday’s are in T-2 months and it’s time to get the ball rolling on the party planning…or at least having a “plan.” I am definitely a “planner,” especially when it comes to things I can control, like the birthday festivities and knowing what we want to do makes it much easier on me, because as we all know…time flies and these yearly milestones happen so fast!

DSCF8258

When it comes to a venue, you’ll probably need to reserve your space with much notice…most of these places that regularly host kid’s parties book up months in advance. If you use a local park, those reservations can book up quick too, especially when it comes to weekends and warm weather. There are many advantages to having it at home, but that’s an individual decision. Things to consider when booking are cost, convenience and the number of guests…availability can sometimes be a factor too if the date and times you wanted is already booked, so get on it early.

In the past, I’ve created fun invitations using templates I’ve found online, that fit the theme and then we personalize with all our details. I’ve done both printing it out and using snail mail, but also emailing all our guests and attaching the “invitation.” Last year, we used an online invitation website, which is also very easy, there are different designs you can select and then all you need to do is enter the details. What I like about online invitation services is that they keep track of all your guests, who has opened aka viewed it, guests can add comments AND you can easily make any changes to the invitation and/or send out updates if there are any last minute changes or special instructions.

Earlier this year, when hosting my sister’s baby shower, she suggested we use an online service called Paperless Post. Paperless Post has both online invitations, as well as cards for every occasion. Their designs look more like beautiful stationary than computer graphics. You can add photos and envelopes as well, so basically you save the tree, but still offer the “thrill” of getting something in the mail and opening it up! You can also opt to print hard copies and send them out the more traditional way too.

Whichever method you choose to get the word out about your fiesta, be sure to check it (at least) twice. Make sure you have all the important info date, time and place – I recently had a friend who ordered beautiful invitations for her son’s 1st birthday, but she left off the date, so she sent out a second invite with the date…that’s double the stamps. Also be sure to make sure the contact info is included. I think its great to use email, but sometimes a phone number is super helpful for kid’s parties because well, when you’re a parent…things happen!

PopSugar Mom Travel Tips

Screen Shot 2016-08-06 at 8.53.04 PM

I recently had an opportunity to collaborate with PopSugar and provide a Mom voice for a travel video they produce in a partnership with Embassy Suites by Hilton.

Screen Shot 2016-08-05 at 9.30.29 PM

It was pretty exciting to be part of this project because PopSugar has a huge following and also because the produce some pretty cool, easy to digest videos with great info and tips! For this particular video I provide the first pro tip for traveling with kids with Busy Boxes. These are perfect for road trips because kids can put them on their laps and be super creative, whether practicing numbers and letters, using it as a race track or even a blank canvas to draw pictures!

Later this month they’ll also be putting out additional tips by myself and the other Moms as single tip videos, but in the meantime if you can watch the first one below…

Summer Days at the Ballpark

IMG_1509

I’m not much of a baseball person, not for lack of understanding, but more-so my short-attention span! However, there’s something about spending a summer day at the ballpark that just screams family fun. And, one way to treat the whole family out to a game and not break the bank is to attend a minor league baseball game.

IMG_1488

So far this season, I’ve had the opportunity to attend a few in my own Bay Area backyard in San Jose at Municipal Stadium to cheer on the San Jose Giants. When we lived in Virginia we had attended a few Norfolk Tides games, but they have nothing on the family-friendliness and additional festivities at a game in San Jose.

IMG_1748

We attended a 4th of July game and even at a sold out maximum capacity, the crowd is still a manageable 4,000-ish…so lines aren’t too long, parking isn’t a pain and there’s plenty of room to move. My boys easily bumped into the team mascot, Gigante, who graciously gave us a photo.

They have several huge inflatables (bounce house style), where kids can slide, jump and try their interactive baseball skills by throwing a strike or swinging a bat. I can’t tell you how proud my boys were to win tickets to future games by throwing a “strike.” It was definitely a highlight, that they won’t soon forget.

IMG_1861

And, did I mention that you can get really up close to the action, Both of my boys each managed to snag a ball during batting practice before the game. I mean, how cool is that!? So, yes, take them out to a (minor) league ballgame and if you’re in the Bay Area, find the way to San Jose!

Dino Dig Party Theme

Screen Shot 2016-07-11 at 11.18.18 AM

Rawr! This past weekend we celebrated the 3rd and 4th birthdays of my (53 weeks apart) baby boys..except I’m realizing they really aren’t “babies” anymore. For their joint celebration this year I chose to do a “Dino Dig” aka dinosaur themed backyard soiree, and I’m really pleased with how it turned out. We got lots of compliments on a “fun” party…and that’s the most important component to any event, right!?!? FUN!!

Screen Shot 2016-07-11 at 10.32.54 AM

I probably get a little obsessive in my planning process trying to make everything theme related and scouring the internet for ideas and decor to pull off a great event. I had multiple banners and even re-named my boys to give them dino-riffic names! I found a free printable HBD dinosaur banner, and dinosaur print letters that I used for the banners with their dinosaur names.

Screen Shot 2016-07-11 at 10.33.43 AM

I purchased a nice dinosaur centerpiece with cone holders which I filled with kid-friendly Veggie Sticks and Pretzels.

Screen Shot 2016-07-11 at 10.33.24 AM

In the backyard, we had a bounce house with a dinosaur panel in front, the kids LOVE to bounce!

A bubble station was also set up, where we had a bubble machine going and an assortment of bubble wands.

Screen Shot 2016-07-11 at 11.16.24 AM

We created a “Dino Dig” site, using an inflatable kiddie pool, filled with sand and hidden “dino eggs” that I purchased online. We wrapped the area with dino dig “caution” tape. I also purchased mini buckets and tools for them to excavate the eggs, and I got enough so that they could take those home too.

Screen Shot 2016-07-11 at 11.27.15 AM

Inside I set up a “photo booth,” using a couple big, jointed, dinosaurs on the wall and a HUGE blow up T-Rex too – the kids loved it, they were all over it..I can’t believe it survived the party! I also got an assortment of dinosaur masks for them to wear for the photo opp!

Screen Shot 2016-07-11 at 11.12.52 AM

When it came to the sweets and dessert, I went with cupcakes (store bought), but I used my own sprinkles that were actually mini-dinosaurs. We also created Dino Dig dessert cups that were made up of chocolate pudding, crushed oreos and gummy dinosaurs on top! Dinosaur lollipops and a plate full of mini-dino cookies I ordered on Etsy, helped make the table look extra festive!

Screen Shot 2016-07-11 at 10.31.44 AM

We had a dinosaur pinata and played Pin the Head on the Dinosaur…

As our thank you gift I put together goodie bags with dino stickers, tattoos, a dino ring pop, bubbles, dino plane and a puzzle. Lots of fun stuff!

IMG_1846

All in all, we couldn’t be happier with the party and how it all came together! It was so much fun and at the end of the day, I had 2 very happy dinosaurs!

Chabot Space and Science Center

IMG_1388

In my quest for new and fun things to do with my young boys, I came across the Chabot Space and Science Center in Oakland. It’s located in the hills about Oakland, nestled among huge redwood trees! I wasn’t sure if my children would be too young to enjoy a science center, but I knew they do cater to children and my curiosity was peeked to see what they have to offer.

IMG_1368 IMG_1371

Unexpectedly, my kids had a blast, from the moment we walked into the first room, they quickly took to the exhibits, standing in the black light – learning about “nebulae,” to gazing into telescopes and getting their first peek into outer space. The thing about museums or centers like this, is that while there’s always lots of signage with instructions and info – that my young sons can’t read yet, everything is hands on. And, even if they don’t quite understand the universe, it’s not a bad idea to introduce these things early, and just let them explore!

Stacks on stacks… #raefthomas #isaiahjoaquin #chabotspaceandscience #blocks #toddlers #discoveryroom

We visited on  Wednesday morning in early June, so we pretty much had the place to ourselves. There was at least one school field trip group there, but the place is big enough that we still felt like we had our run of the center.

IMG_1379

There was also a fun “discovery” room, where school group are not allowed. My boys gave their hand at building with huge lego blocks and spent some time with hard hats piecing together wood construction pieces too.

IMG_1384

One of their favorite attractions was this huge scream box where you could stand inside and just let it ALL out! Scream at the very top of your lungs and watch the sound waves on the screen while your “screaming” photo is captured.

IMG_1386IMG_1390

Other highlights of this Bay Area summer stop were the astronaut and space station exhibits – I was surprised to hear my (2 year old) younger son use the term astronaut and show me that he already was familiar with astronauts!

IMG_1394

Overall, it was a fun ride. We spent little more than 2 hours there, capping our visit off with a movie in the planetarium. It was a cartoonish video about kids who journey to outer space in a cardboard rocketship…and we visited all the planets!

Alameda’s Island Jam

IMG_1540

Every Father’s Day weekend in Alameda, Webster Street is shut down and room is made for the annual Island Jam! The carnival-like event is put on by the Alameda Chamber of Commerce and is open to everyone. This year, I decided to make a Bay Area Summer Stop with my boys, and check out some of street fair’s attractions. One of the things I love about living in Alameda is the fact that (IMO) it’s an urban oasis. There’s a small town feel, but it’s just a stone’s throw from SF and Oakland, so it offers a very diverse mix of activities, culture and ideas. The Island Jam is no exception. It’s not a HUGE production, but it take up several blocks on Webster with rides and games for kids, as well as community booths and local vendors…plus we can’t forget the food trucks and multiple music stages.

Of course since I had the boys in tow, the main attraction were the rides. Entrance and access to the street fair are free, but to use any of the rides or games, you need tickets. This year tickets ran about a buck each, depending on how many you purchase, and each attraction requires a certain number of tickets. I chose a moderate package, so I asked my boys to be selective on which attractions they wanted to use their tickets for.

funslide1

Well, there was no question the FUN SLIDE, was at the top of their list. In fact it was the first and last ride we took during our visit to Island Jam. Also, a photographer happened to snap a couple fun photos of us as we zipped down the giant slide! Side note – all the ride operators we encountered were really friendly women and it felt “safe”…just saying! 😉

While all the attractions are geared toward children, there are also many signs posted for each with height requirements. So, for the slide my younger toddler had no choice but to sit on Mommy’s lap, or shall I say I had no choice but to take a turn on the slide too! Among the many rides were a train, bird cages and the wrecking ball. I sat that one out and took this video below…

“Spiderman” also just happened to be on that ride with them, so they thought that was the coolest thing ever! haha! All in all, it is good family fun and if you’re looking for a way to get outside for a couple hours during Father’s Day weekend, it’s a nice option. Live music, some rides and the beach isn’t far either. We did a lap up and down Webster Street, took one more turn down the fun slide and ended with scoops of Mitchell’s ice cream before we headed home for a nap.

Tilden Little Farm

A photo posted by Aubrey Aquino (@fifty3weeks) on

Summer is here and now that my boys are on the verge of turning 3 and 4, they are mobile and have excessive amounts of energy, so getting out and about is a must! So, I’ll be posting about our different outings around the Bay Area and beyond, wherever our Summer 16 adventures take us!

IMG_1274

First up is Little Farm at Tilden Park in Berkeley. I had heard about this spot in the Berkeley Hills where you could feed some of the farm animals and explore, and it’s just a short car ride from where we live, so we headed up to the farm on a Friday morning. I packed a lunch and some snacks, I wasn’t sure how much time we would need.

IMG_1266

The farm is short walk up from a public parking area (no charge to park), and there are lots of shaded areas and picnic tables if you want to plan for a picnic. There is also a small playground adjacent to  the parking lot.

IMG_1264

I also brought celery so the boys could feed the animals. **Note – at Little Farm they ONLY allow you to feed the animals celery or lettuce.** I wasn’t sure how much to bring and I wish I had packed more, because our (animal) food stash went quick. I had only brought a handful of celery sticks…turns out between my two, we could’ve used a few celery stalks and a whole head of lettuce!

IMG_1268
My boys really enjoyed holding out the celery to cows, goats and even the sheep! I loved that the farm is set up to be at their level. There weren’t any height issues while trying to see the animals or reach out to give them food.

IMG_1273

There’s also a butterfly area, small creek and kid’s garden for children to explore too. There are clean bathrooms and hand washing stations and the atmosphere is very comfortable.

IMG_1279

All in all we walked the property, explored and lingered to check out the scenery, ate lunch and played in the playground within a 2 hour time period. It’s just enough to get outside, enjoy the fresh air, but not tire them out too much…and there’s no cost! We will be back again!

Q:What is your favorite piece of advice to new Moms?
A: My favorite piece of advice/warning to give new Moms is: Be selfless but don’t lose yourself. Before I had kids I tried very hard to get most of my selfish-ness out of my system. I think that’s important because you need to be sure you’re ready for kids. No regrets for not fulfilling your dream because now it’s more about theirs! And those kids are like parasites – they suck everything from you! At the same time – and this is a fine balancing act – you have to remember to carve out a little time for you (and your spouse). Because in the end if you’re not happy – they won’t be either!

Q: How do you balance being a Mommy and keeping your sense of self?
A: I still do the things I love to do.  Even when my children were very young. It was few and far between but I took opportunities to shop, decorate, drink wine, go out with my friends and husband, it’s why I started One Picky Chick. I wanted to maintain myself almost as much as my kids. Your children will only benefit in the long run.

Q: How do you incorporate fitness into your daily routine?
A: This is so easy for new moms to do.  Grab a stroller and roll. Nobody gives walking the credit it deserves. I lost ALL MY BABY WEIGHT from walking in months! Walk 5 times a week for an hour, with your baby, once they’re 3-4 weeks old and you’ll be able to do it with them until they’re 5! Don’t wait until they’re over 1 year… they’ll never stay put. And the best part, it’s FREE!

Q: What’s your most memorable Mommy moment to date?
A: It’s not a good one so brace yourself.  One day, after being sick and tired my daughter looked at me and said, “I’m just so sad from the inside, out…” Shocked I replied, “do you feel like that often?” To which she said, “sometimes in school I feel like crying for no reason.” It was at that moment I realized the popular prescribed med she was taking was making her depressed and changing her personality. I had been struggling with understanding her mood shift prior to that and it finally clicked. It was such a horribly deflating Mom moment because I felt as if I had let her down. I was supposed to guard and protect her yet I had unknowingly let something come in and steal a big piece of her away – all as I was watching it happen. It made me realize that you need to really be present 24/7. Now, I’m a Stay-at-home-Mom so I don’t mean just physically. I mean you have to constantly be in their faces, analyzing, testing, loving, guiding and supporting. Otherwise, something will get past you and I promise, you don’t want to take that chance. Of course I wrote about the experience on my blog HERE.

SoCal Stop: Dinosaurs in the Desert

dino2

Along I-10 in Southern California, you can find dinosaurs in the desert in between the palm trees. I heard about the spot in Cabazon from a friend when I mentioned I’d be driving from Ontario to Indio. I inquired if there were any good spots for kids and this “pit stop” was mentioned…

Okay, so when I say pit stop, that’s literally what it is…an exit with a gas station, a Burger King and dinosaurs. Coming from Ontario it was just one exit past the Desert Hills Outlets (where I’ve heard there’s great shopping) and the Morongo Casino.

dino1

If you ever watched Pee Wee’s Big Adventure, and you can recall a dinosaur scene…this is them! And, these Cabazon Dinosaurs are a couple of giant concrete dinosaurs that stick out in the desert landscape.

It’s not a stop you need to make lots of time for…we literally snapped some photos from the Burger King parking lot. Although, my 2-year old kept asking me how we could get up there! Nonetheless, if you ever pass through the area, it’s worth it to stop and snap a pic or two with Dinny the Dinosaur, a larger-than-life-sized Brontosaurus and a 100-ton Tyrannosaurus Rex named Mr. Rex. I promise it’s kind of DINO-mite! 😉

BTW…my kids are only casual dinosaur fans, we went to the Discover the Dinosaurs exhibit a few months back…but the Cabazon Dinos definitely caught their attention and it’s FREE!!
