2020 Mother’s Day Gifts

I love the creativity, hilarity and light-heartedness being spawned by the pandemic…and Mother’s Day is not immune! Typically our kids would still be in school and their ever so thoughtful teachers usually assign and create a craft for the kids to bring home to Mom, but not this year.

In all seriousness, I am the type who really isn’t expecting or needing a material gift, but I also won’t lie, it is nice to get a little something (from Baby Daddy *hint hint*) to let me know that I am thought of and appreciated. So, just in case you need some gift ideas for the Mom’s in your life, I did a product roundup for my show, to jump start those thoughtful gift-giving wheels to spoil your Mama with something sweet!

Every time I select items for these roundups, I try to pick things that speak to me personally, or gifts I would love to give. I hope this provides some insight into what may make a good gift, and I wish you the best in gifting the Moms in your life. Happy Mother’s Day!

Here’s the rundown of featured products:

How to Make a Money Lei and Crown

IMG_0733

Money, money, money…glorious green cash…cha-ching! Money is a great gift for graduations, weddings and birthdays and other occasions too. If you want to present it in a different way and make your gift a little more memorable, I’ve got a few easy ideas to add visual value to those dollar bills – or whatever denomination you want to use.

My brother got married recently and I knew they’d be doing a “money dance” at the reception, so I decided to get a little creative and make something of my money! In the past I’d made some basic money lei’s for my younger siblings high school graduations, but I wanted to make this cash count and stand out in a big way.

Cash Crown

As with most of my projects, I start with an internet search of images and tutorials to get some guidance and inspiration. I didn’t have a whole lot of time to invest, so “easy” was important. For this crown, I pretty much followed these instructions.

For my brother’s “adult” crown I used 14 bills and I asked him his fitted hat size (7 3/4) to get an idea of how big his head really is! j/k  Then, I used a fitted hat to eyeball and measure it out as I constructed it. This will make sense as you assemble the crown. So, depending on how big (or small) you want to make the crown, you’ll need 10-14 bills, the amount of each is up to you!

Kukui Nut Money Lei

This was the most time consuming of the 3 cash gifts I assembled. I used a kukui nut necklace and basically tied bills to the necklace using curling ribbon and also incorporated shiny gold sheets of paper alternating with the bills. I cut the sheets of paper the same size as a bill and folded them all like an accordion (that’s the time consuming part), going back and forth. I did this to add color to the lei and also because I wanted to lessen the number of bills I would need. Tie each piece in the middle and then fanned each bill out to look more like a “flower.” After that I attached them to the kukui necklace with the curling ribbon, adding a piece between each of the nuts.

Fluffy Flower Money Lei

Out of the 3 cash gifts, my “fluffy flower money lei” was probably the easiest. I simply used a silk flower lei (found at the dollar store), and tied flat bills at their center to take on a bowtie shape. If the bills are crispy they can be a little tough to tie in the center, but take your time not to rip the bill. Once I had all the bills ready, I attached a bill in between each flower, tying it on with the curling ribbon. Here’s the link to my online inspiration for this one…

Tips

  • Figure out how many bills you will need, crispy bills are ideal for the cash crown and kukui nut let where you will “accordion” fold them
  • Go to the bank and get the cash you will need
  • Clear tape is a must for the money crown to make it secure
  • Keep in mind these may be taken apart, and spent, so I was careful to keep that in mind while tying and taping each bill

Father’s Day Gift Guide

I find that it’s usually pretty easy to find a gift for my Dad. He’s pretty awesome, he is thankful for any gift and likes pretty much everything. However, I’m always trying to think of great gifts to give him to show him how much he is appreciated. So, (for work) I put together my Father’s Day Gift Guide for 2015, from cologne to grilling, watches and family-fun games…I thought I’d share it here too!

Holiday Gift Guide for Mom, Dad and Kids

Christmas-gifts-under-tree

This fall I took on the daunting task of putting together holiday gift guides for everyone and everything on your list… and presented them on my show. Shopping may seem fun and easy, but it’s actually pretty tough to select items and make suggestions to make sure you cover all the demographics and range of tastes for all kinds of individuals! All that being said, I think I did a pretty good job to help someone out with some “bright” gift ideas….

Gift Guide: What a Mom Wants AND Needs

Screen shot 2014-05-01 at 8.57.16 PM

Mother’s Day is coming up quick, I can barely believe we’re already in May! Mother’s Day is a great occasion to celebrate and recognize Mom’s…and while that show of appreciation is definitely deserved year round, having a specific day to make a big deal about moms is alright with me. Well, since us females may not be the easiest breed to shop for, I thought I’d compile a list of favorite “Mommy” gifts, after asking my circle of friends. I will say that some of the best gifts for a Mom are items/services that force the Mom to “pamper” herself. So, if you give a gift card, make sure it’s for something she has to use on herself, not end up buying something for the kids. Thoughtful, personalized gifts are also very nice. I know as a Mom, I try to do this for loved ones and sometimes it’s nice to be the recipient of those type of unique presents too! For more gift ideas for women, visit That Sweet Gift.

Here are the results of my informal “survey”…

SpaDay

Massage/Spa Day – This can be given with a gift certificate or by actually setting an appointment and “ordering” the gift-ed Mom to GO! This is a gift that supports Mom taking care of herself!!! I’ve been lucky enough on more than one occasion to be spoiled with massage and spa services, where the appointments had been set and fess taken care of and I was simply told, no ifs ands or but’s …just show up! I also have a membership at Massage Envy, I think this would be a great gift, as it’ll keep giving, with an included rub down month after month!

tinytags-300x300

Nameplate/Initial Necklaces – A very popular item that a Mom can wear, these pieces of jewelry have the child’s name or initials, etc… Again the personalization is what makes this type of gift extra special and being able to wear a symbol of her most precious possession(s)  around her neck is a beautiful thing.

Maid/Cleaning Service – I think this is pretty self explanatory, give Mom a break from the cleaning chores, it’s a win-win for everyone in the house.

Food/Meal Service – We all need to eat and having meals delivered and ready to go is a beautiful thing, believe me, when dinner/food is taken care of, it takes a big load off my back.

Photo/Recipe Book – This is a creative gift that you can’t exactly do last minute. One idea is to compile Mom’s favorite photos, or maybe gather photo memories of her with the kids and have it printed in a nice book (I always use Shutterfly), that she can view over and over again, and keep for a lifetime! One of my girl friend’s shared the super cute idea of printing a recipe book with all of Mom’s favorite recipes and pictures added…that way she has them all in one place, no more searching for scraps of papers! I think that is such a cute idea.

No matter what gift you get for a Mom, it is the thought that counts! And, if most Moms are anything like me, it’s the little things that can give way for the biggest smiles. The most precious gift is family, that is priceless! 😉

Maddy Wear: Bibs Beyond Basic

maddywear

A bib is a bib is a bib right!?!? WRONG! Sure, we use them on our little ones to catch all the excess drool or to attempt and make feeding time a little less messy…but somehow, sometimes, whatever we were trying to avoid is unavoidable! Well, I came across a very cool take on the traditional bib. It’s trendy, functional, unique, reversible and handmade. Did I mention this bib is also eco-friendly and easy to wash!?!?! It’s called Maddy Wear and I came across it after a good friend of mine raved about how GREAT it is!!

cupcakemaddy

The bibs are super stylish and come in all kinds of fun prints for a wide variety of characters! I mean Maddy Wear is more like a fun accessory you can add to your baby’s wardrobe, then just some random bib you’re using to take care of the “dirty” work. These tank-style bibs do not need to be pulled over the head and have snaps at each shoulder and along one side, to easily get on your little one and secure, so they aren’t ripping it off their necks and tearing the velcro fastener apart…like with a typical bib. Designed and made by Amanda Thompson of Seattle, Washington, with “100% love… “The bibs have no designated front and are reversible. One bib can be used four times, which supports an eco-friendly lifestyle. An additional bonus to the 4 in 1 aspect is the need to only pack one for a day outing.”

Maddy Wear bibs are made in 6, 12 and 18 month sizes (S,M,L) and are designed to have a “larger fit” to be comfortable over clothing and span many months as your child grows. Plus – beyond the bibs, Maddy Wear also offers burps cloths, child aprons and blankets too. I love all of the fun fabrics she works with and if you want a truly unique gift for a baby shower or 1st birthday…this definitely is a good, useful idea! 😉

How to Make a Diaper Cake

IMG_2811
Diaper cakes are a GREAT gift for new parents whether given at a baby shower or to greet the new arrival. First off, the gift of diapers is practical, they are definitely needed and will be used. Second, you can be really creative and personalize the diaper gift with colors and decorations. Lastly, it’s not that hard to do at home…it may appear to be some huge time consuming project that only the craftiest individuals can put together, but actually, it’s not hard at all! So, in the spirit of diaper cake-ing, here’s an easy how to make a (three layer) diaper cake!

Items Needed:

  • 40 Disposable Diaper – 40 disposable diapers (3 layers require 7, 13 and 20). **Find out and/or ask if the recipient has a diaper brand/style preference**
  • 3 Receiving Blankets – if you use a 3 or 4 pack of coordinating patterned receiving blankets, it works great
  • empty paper towel cardboard roll or extra receiving blanket
  • 1 cake tray or piece of cardboard to serve as the base for the cake
  • Pearl Pins, Rubber Bands, Ribbon, Toy (for cake topper) and any other decor items to personalize the diaper cake – like flowers, string of pearls, feather boa, small bath toys, etc…

IMG_2164 STEP 1:
stack diapers and then slowly “fan” them out into a circular/round shape
Bottom layer >> 20 diapers
Middle layer >> 13 diapers
Top Layer >> 7 diapers
*tip – using a circular cake pan can help you get it into the desired shape

IMG_2165 STEP 2:     IMG_2166
use a rubber band to keep diapers in place and hold shape

IMG_2167 IMG_2168
STEP 3:
fold receiving blanket to be width or diaper layer, leaving some material excess to tuck in to center and cover the layer.
i sort of think of this as applying the “fondant” to the cake”roll diapers in receiving blanket, then secure material in place with a pearl pin

IMG_2169 IMG_2170 IMG_2171
STEP 4:
tuck excess receiving blanket material into center of diaper layer to cover the top
note: diapers will be exposed at bottom of the layer

IMG_2172  IMG_2173
STEP 5:
stack cake layers and insert (either or all) paper towel roll and/or rolled up extra receiving blanket into center of the 3 layers to adjoin them.
in this case (pictured) a security blanket/lovey was used as cake “topper” so blanket portion was also threaded through the center of the layers

STEP 6:
DECORATE! Use ribbon, trimming, flowers (fresh or fake) to really personalize your diaper cake and have fun with it!

Classic Kids Toys with a Modern Day Twist

As I peruse the toy aisles at stores this holiday season, I am seeing so many toys which bring back old memories of my own childhood. It’s fun to see what’s still around and popular with the young set, or the same toy perhaps reinvented with the current “happening” cartoon characters… Now that my older (baby) son is almost at the 18 month mark and the younger baby racing toward 6 months, I’m finding toys for them which I certainly remember having in the toy box. All this to say I thought it would be fun to do a little comparison of a few of the classic toys from “then” – let’s just say about 30 years ago…to now!

stackingrings

First up, the “stacking rings.” This is a classic that can’t be touched, it’s been the SAME for decades, okay the last half-century, really! The only difference now (Fisher Price version) is that the top ring is see-through and is a rattle! This toy is still easy on the wallet, no batteries required and still is a great learning tool for babies! There are several other versions out now that are basically the same toy, just more creative with the rings…using different textures, crinkle sounds, teethers, rattles and even a mirror in the different ring sizes for stacking.

Next, the “corn popper.” The one pictured to the left is a current selling “classic” version by Fisher Price. It’s pretty much the same thing as the old school toy, they’ve just jazzed up the design a bit. Also pictured on the right is the Bright Starts Plane Popper (which my son has), the modern twist here is not only is it a popper, but it’s a plane with wings and you can drop balls into it which shoot out when the lever on the handle is squeezed.

Then there’s the good ole shape sorter! The one I recall from childhood looked something like the version on the left. It was red and blue with yellow shape pieces you had to correctly insert into the corresponding shape “hole”…to get them out, you just had to pull it open and the center. Nowadays shape sorters are much more fancy, music & blinking lights, sleek design…even the shapes have objects and pictures in them, and then it’s all color-coded into a convenient receptacle with a carrying handle. The toy makes noise when shook and/or objects are placed inside with different volume levels to pick from…batteries are required for that!

telephone

I am definitely amused though to see toys like the classic record player and telephone still around in a classic version! Yes, you can still purchase these…the modern twist here being a (mobile) handheld device. I clearly remember my record player, and I even got several upgrades over my childhood years to play my records. I loved the read along books narrated by a record! However, these 2 toys are examples of classic toys that just may not make any sense to today’s tech savvy generation. I’m sure a record player would be pretty foreign and the telephone (with rotary dial), plenty of fun to play with, but I wonder if they could make the connection that we actually used to have those plugged in at home for phone calls, not a slick mobile device kept in our pockets!?!? Boy, times sure have changed!!

Screen shot 2013-11-28 at 9.40.46 AM

What to get for the man (or men) in your life. Fortunately, I find it easier to buy gifts for the opposite sex, when it comes to my Dad, brother and other half, there are always sure to make them smile gifts! Maybe get them apparel or merchandise from their favorite sports team, a cool gadget or food always works too. However, if you want to seek out a few more original ideas this holiday season, below I’ve listed my under $100 picks from the 2013 Gilt.com Holiday Gift Guide!

Give the gift of socks! Everyone needs several pair of these to keep their toes and feet warm and cozy, so why not give your man socks with lots of personality. I like the fun flair of these Ben Sherman Socks, Oliver Winston (6 pack) and GILT offers the entire set at $24.

Every professional needs a nice case to carry his business cards, so why not this Vertical Card Holder by Jack Spade. I actually have a Jack Spade travel bag and I love it. It’s stylish, very durable and super cool…I get lots of compliments when I tote it around. This slim card holder sports a perforated leather design, giving it a textured look. ON GILT It is just $35.

Find this designer set at GILT for just $84.

2013 Holiday Gift Guide: For Her

Screen shot 2013-11-27 at 9.26.28 PM

I’ll be the first to admit, that I’m probably not the easiest person to buy a gift for. I mean I could write a list and tell you what I want, but even that can be tough…especially these days for me as a Mom, I have everything I need, and there isn’t much I want! Sure, there’s stuff I WANT, but they are luxuries that are not easily justifiable due to cost and practicality. Seriously though, I have always struggled with issues of buyer’s remorse and I always want the best bargain… I’ve learned to live on a budget, and it’s just hard for me to ask for things that I really don’t need or can’t justify. At any rate, the holidays is not all about giving gifts, but it is also about receiving, because even though it may be a “material” gesture, you have to be open to the one who is giving, since it may be the giver’s way of showing their love and appreciation for you!

All that being said, here are some of my favorite picks “For Her,” under $100 from the 2013 Gilt.com Holiday Gift Guide!

Put a ring on it! Well, actually she will with this Crown Ring Holder by Three Rings. Sometimes I’m not so big on all the jewelry organizers, but I love this because it’s cute and practical, and different than a traditional jewelry box! Now if you want to get her a ring to place on the holder…that might cost more than $100! 😉 Crown her for $10 at GILT.

Give her some color… GILT has this Paula Dorf exclusive nail polish set of 5. Even if she’s the type to go to the salon for a mani/pedi, it’s always nice to have a set of polish on hand at home, and at $22, this is a GILT-less deal!

A robe! Everyone needs to have a robe and one of my most memorable gifts from a good friend was a robe, which I still use to this day every time I step out of the shower or need a quick cover up! Check out this Patch Pocket Robe by Blush Lingerie for a very affordable $39.

Bracelets can also be a very nice gift, they’re an accessory which I may not necessarily purchase f  rmyself, but if I have them on hand, I am bound to put them to use! This silver-tone set with white and blue bead details from Chamak by Priya Kakkar is pretty and would easily pair with a range of outfits. Find it at GILT for $55.

Last but not least, if your gift recipient is someone who’s into fashion and likes “labels,” you can’t go wrong with the Missoni Supermini Manual Umbrella. It’s cute, compact and above all stylish, perfect to keep in your bag to save her on a rainy day! at GILT for $69.
