My Kiddos Krushed It!

photo 1

My toddlers “Krushed It” over the weekend in a 1k fun run for the Kettle Krush 2015 event. Last year, we did it for the first time, so it was a must, to return this year. I am by no means a runner, matter of fact, I have a ton of friends who’ve taken up running and doing these runs as their favorite weekend activities…I have always maintained I can support, but I am better suited for cheering them on along the course and greeting them at the finish line.

A 1k though, a “fun run”…no problem! What I really like about this race, besides the short distance, is that it takes place at a (minor league) ballpark not far from our home, Harbor Park. The course takes racers through the parking lot before eventually, entering at field level and crossing the finish line at home base.

Another fun novelty during this run is that since the event benefits the Salvation Army and its name “Kettle Krush” is meant to bring awareness to the fact that the organization needs community support all year long, the runners are given a little bag with quarters at the halfway mark, to then drop in the red kettle when they finish the race. My boys absolutely love that part… It is kind of a distraction though because when they first get the coins, they think they’re done and so I had to open their bag of quarters to let them actually hold them as they ran!

Other pluses of doing this run, is that everyone can “run” and even my little guys can make it to the finish line at their young age. Also, given all the energy they have in the morning, it’s a nice way for them to get some of it out and enjoy family time, and doing something together. They wore their finisher medals with so much pride, and the nap they took afterwards wasn’t bad either!

On the way out, the kids got to “high five” the Norfolk Tides’ mascot Rip Tide, and munched on post-race bananas!

***NOTE – The only hazard on this outing was that they kept wanting to rip the race bibs off their shirts! LOL!!

Hometown/Current Location: Orlando, FL/Norfolk, VA
Quick Bio: I am the host of Cooking from the Heart, a cooking show geared toward busy moms/dads who want to prepare healthy, delicious, budget-friendly meals for their families, but don’t want to miss out on precious family time, by being stuck all day in the kitchen. This is my dream gig because I love cooking and I love helping people find ways to simplify their lives. They say if you do what you love, they you will be successful, and I am thrilled to say that my “local” cooking show was picked up nationally in June and will now be available in 57,000,000 homes nationwide! It’s so exciting to think that someone in L.A. or N.Y could be making my chicken and dumplings!

All my life I’ve loved adventures. I’ve hiked the Great Wall of China, gone paragliding in the Swiss Alps, canoed in the Amazon River and also ridden through the Andes on the top of a train, among other things. After marrying the man of my dreams in my late thirties, I embarked on the biggest adventure of all, motherhood. As “older parents” our biggest challenge has been keeping up with our daughter’s energy. I love that we have learned to play again – I have an excuse to jump around inside bounce houses and go to skating rinks! And, I really love when my wonderful husband takes Sienna for a Daddy/Daughter day and I get to recharge!

You can check out the show at www.cox11.com or nationally on AMG networks. Also, I upload the shows and other recipes, tips, pictures etc on my Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/KarenIsCookingFromTheHeart

Q: What is your favorite piece of advice to new Moms?
A: If there is one piece of advice I would give to a new mom, it would be “Don’t compare yourself to other mothers!” When you are in the throes of nursing, dealing with diapers, and basically surviving on 4 hours of “interrupted” sleep a night, it is easy to see other mothers apparently dealing with everything beautifully. They look great and it seem to be breezing through what you struggle to get through on a daily basis, and you feel like an utter failure. But trust me, I know this through personal experience (and lots of conversations with moms), their homes aren’t spotless, their laundry isn’t all done, and you probably just caught them on “shower day.”

Q: How would you describe your parenting style?
A: Lots of conversations and lots of love. I think it’s easier to model and explain what you expect for your child at a young age. They are such little sponges and things like manners and good behavior will become “first” nature if they know what is expected of them. When my daughter exhibits good behavior I always praise her (and often rain kisses on her). When she does something naughty, I always address it immediately –no matter where we are or what we are doing. I tell her we need to have a “conversation” and explain why the behavior was naughty, what consequences it can have and how she always has a choice when it comes to her behavior. Since we started having our conversations, I can probably count on one hand the number of times I’ve had to put her in time out. Also, because she understands what is going on and has some control over her “choices,” tantrums have practically become a thing of the past.

Q: As a Mommy what is it that you feel you do “right”?
A: As the mommy of a wonderful little girl, I think one of the most important things to do is to make sure my daughter has a great sense of self and loads of confidence. I try to reinforce this in a couple of ways. I make sure that she knows how deeply she is loved, that no matter what happens, if she has a naughty moment etc….  or even if I am frustrated with her behavior at the moment, I will always love her completely. I also try to make sure I always praise her as a whole. By this I mean I tell her she is very smart, funny, brave, kind, silly, etc… I want her to know she has strengths in many areas, so that in the future, if one aspect of her falters, she will have so much more to draw from and won’t lose confidence in herself.

Q: What is the best surprise you/ve ever done for your kids/family?
A: We moved away from home (FL) almost 3 years ago, leaving all of our family behind. My daughter is an only child and as such was very close to her older twin cousins and absolutely adores them. When I found out my 11 year old niece was going to be giving her first concert, I knew we couldn’t miss it. I don’t know who was more excited when I told her that we were not going to school that day, but instead to Florida to see her cousins. Sienna was thrilled! I also didn’t tell my sister or any of her family we were coming. My daughter and I hid on the front porch when we got to their house and my mother went in to visit. She sent the kids out to get something she “forgot” in the car, and we jumped out! The screams of delight brought my sister out of the house, and seeing the tears in her eyes made my heart swell. There was so much love! It was the best 2 way surprise ever!!!

Child & Age: Maggie, 3 Years Old
Hometown/Current Location: Born & Raised in Norfolk, Va
Quick Bio: Radio Personality on 94.9 The Point for the last 12 years! Started as an intern when I was a senior at Maury High School & worked my way up to having my own show! Hard work & dedication – plus persistence paid off! I am married to McCoy Wood (married since November 2007) and we have 1 daughter Maggie. I am the youngest of 4 kids. My parents still live in Norfolk – my sister is in Norfolk, 1 brother lives in Richmond, the other is in Chesapeake. Yes – my brothers are twins. And my mom is a twin! Thus the reason I think 1 kid is enough. HA HA! I love working on the radio – all the fun, the live music, the interaction with the community. I have helped to raise over $3 Million for CHKD via our annual 94.9 The Point Radiothon. I love running, margaritas at Luna Maya & going to the beach with Maggie.

Q: What is your “go to” snack/toy/show/trick when your kids start to fuss?
A: Goldfish and Lollipops! HA HA! Also – the promise of a bike ride to the park or a trip to the beach can usually get Maggie out of a funky mood. I am not below bribery.

Q: What is your favorite piece of advice to new Moms?
A: If you are happy, your baby will be happy! Babies & Kids can pick up when Mom is in a bad mood … so I always try to be happy & positive when I am around Maggie. Also – go with your gut. Sometimes getting advice & opinions from friends/family/the internet can only make you do something you as a parent don’t feel right with. Go with your gut.

Q: How do you incorporate fitness into your daily routine?
A: This is a big part of my day! I always make time for a work out … no excuses. I work a full day – and usually pick up Maggie by 12 Noon. I will either work in a 30 minute run before 12, or go to a yoga or Pure Barre class at night around 7PM. I try to work out at least 6 days a week. It isn’t always the same thing – but running/yoga/Pure Barre are my favorite things right now.

Q: How would you describe your parenting style?
A: I think I am 90% fun – 10% disciplinarian. But I think McCoy & I hit the kid lottery. Maggie has been the easiest & happiest little girl since the day we brought her home. We have never had an on the floor temper tantrum or meltdowns in the Target toy aisle. Terrible 2’s did not happen for us. It was Terrific 2’s! *Knock on Wood* But really – she is just an awesome, well mannered, happy little girl. I think her attitude is definitely a reflection of how we parent her. She really is a special little thing & I think seeing her mom & Dad laughing & enjoying life makes her realize there is no reason to lay on the floor screaming. But ask me this again when she’s 16!

Kettle Krush

raefrun

My family participated in its first run together recently…the Kettle Krush! This event benefits the Salvation Army and their aim is to “krush” the myth that they only need donations and support during the holidays. We actually just did the 1K…I know, we really went for it, huh? But the “fun run” as perfect for us, because my now 23-month old was able to complete the entire race without sitting in a stroller! What made it even more exciting was that at a halfway point, they handed him a small bag with 2 quarters in it, which he then turned around to run back toward the finish line and deposit in the Salvation Army’s famous red kettles… Then after we did that, he proceeded to run into Harbor Park (AAA baseball park) and made a dash for home base where we all finished the race!

I really enjoyed this family activity as it promotes exercise and fitness, benefits a good cause, is something we can do all together AND got us out of the house nice and early, but even when we finished we still had the whole day ahead of us. I suspect we will be participating in more of these races….there’s so many these days, you could really do one every weekend if you wanted too! I am definitely not a runner, but this was easy, we jogged/walked at Raef’s pace, Isaiah kicked back in the stroller and we all had a fun time. Now I can brag I’ve completed a “race,” worn a bib and everything! haha! So, if you’ve ever contemplated doing something like this, I say, go for it…great family activity.

kkss

And you know, after the weekend I did have to mention our race outing on-air at my job as host of The Hampton Roads Show…so my babies got a little shine on the TV too! 😉
