Distance Learning during Coronavirus

I don’t know about everyone else, but this distance learning is not easy! It was one thing to help my kids with their nightly homework assignments and try to figure out how to do “common core,” but managing their assignments, tempering emotions (theirs and mine), plus keeping them focused and on track for school, is tough to say the least!

A lot of us have questions about online learning, especially as we all learn as we go. I know one of my concerns has been making sure they stay on target as far as meeting education standards for their grade level and also keeping them sharp and prepared, as they will transition to the next grade level (hopefully this fall), without ever having gone back to the teacher they abruptly left.

At any rate, it is challenging and we could all use some support, reassurance and insight on how to not only get through this period, but also what it may look like when we come out o the other side, as well as why it’s important to embrace the digital tools available to us and spin our perspectives to the positive.

I spoke with the CEO and Co-Founder of Study.com, Adrian Ridner and he offered some tips, advice and guidance on distance learning and what we can do to help our kids as they do school from home. A few of his key points included managing expectations for ourselves and the kids, viewing this “screen time,” as a benefit where we can connect and access the resources we need and he doesn’t believe online learning will replace our traditional learning institutions.

KIDZ BOP …is Coming to Town

KB_BestTimeEver_HIRES

KIDZ BOP is coming to town, and if you (like me), allow your children to watch TV, chances are you’ve seen or heard one of their catchy commercials where you’ll hear pop music snippets from their latest CD! I’ll admit, when I first started hearing the music, it would throw me off, since I was more familiar with the “real,” original artist versions. However, there’s something about hearing these pop tunes with a younger voice that really appeals to my kids.

Since then, they’ve discovered Kidz Bop music videos on youtube, and we are faithful listeners in the car via Sirius Satellite radio! So, naturally when I found out they were going on the “Best Time Ever” tour, my ears perked up and I found out the tour is indeed coming to a town near me!

Now, I have debated a little about if my boys (almost 4 and 5), we’re ready for a concert…but then a friend pointed out that I’ve taken them to see the Wiggles, Disney on Ice and other shows, so why not!?! And, you know, they have a point…and what’s even better is that this time I will be familiar with all these tunes. Okay, who am I kidding, I knew all the songs at the other shows too!

This tour features a new class of Kidz Bop kids, who are all touring together for the first time. And — there’s one member in particular who my son Isaiah is impressed with, and that would be Kidz Bop Isaiah… I think there’s something about knowing they share the same name! 😉 Anyhow, I’m planning to surprise mine with an outing to the Concord show as a preschool graduation gift, and I can’t wait to watch them enjoy the show!

CRAZY 8 DRAMA — In “Cars 3,” Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson) hits the road in an effort to reignite his career. Along the way, he finds himself in the middle of a smash-and-crash, figure-8 race, facing off against local legend Miss Fritter, a formidable school bus who—like #95 himself—doesn’t like to lose. Disneyland’s Main Street Electrical Parade

When I think about my early visits to Disneyland when I was a child, the Main Street Electrical Parade is one of the first things that comes to mind, after Mickey and Minnie. In fact, if I’m being honest, I never even realized it went away….there definitely was a time lapse between my childhood, to now being a parent where I hadn’t visited Disneyland in YEARS!

Last year when I took my boys to Anaheim and Disneyland for the first time, I didn’t realize the night parade was not the same one I was accustomed to seeing during my visits as a kid. And, while the parade(s) we saw were awesome in their own right, it was very exciting for me to hear that the Main Street Electrical Parade is lighting up Disneyland once again!!!

There sure is something about it that’s very nostalgic to me, and being able to share that experience with the kids is very cool, not to mention maybe I won’t feel so “dated,” as the characters and visuals that amused me as a child will have the same effect on them today! All this being said, I got to do an interview about this excited (limited time) event at Disneyland. I spoke to Disneyland spokesman Eddy Collins and the man mouse himself, MICKEY MOUSE even dropped in on the interview I did for Bay Area LIFE.

Check it out here…

If you want to see it and “relive” that childhood experience or maybe see it for the very first time, be sure to visit Disneyland Resort by June 18!!

PopSugar Mom Travel Tips

Screen Shot 2016-08-06 at 8.53.04 PM

I recently had an opportunity to collaborate with PopSugar and provide a Mom voice for a travel video they produce in a partnership with Embassy Suites by Hilton.

Screen Shot 2016-08-05 at 9.30.29 PM

It was pretty exciting to be part of this project because PopSugar has a huge following and also because the produce some pretty cool, easy to digest videos with great info and tips! For this particular video I provide the first pro tip for traveling with kids with Busy Boxes. These are perfect for road trips because kids can put them on their laps and be super creative, whether practicing numbers and letters, using it as a race track or even a blank canvas to draw pictures!

Later this month they’ll also be putting out additional tips by myself and the other Moms as single tip videos, but in the meantime if you can watch the first one below…

ivivva Coast to Coast in San Francisco

Girl power was on full display in the city by the Bay this weekend, as the ivivva Coast to Coast Festival popped up in San Francisco  at the scenic City View at Metreon. More than 250 active, stylish and energetic tween girls showed up to engage in the festivities, including the POUND workout, making it the largest class of tweens they’ve ever led!

If you’re a fan of lululemon athletica, know that ivivva is cut from the same cloth. The brand was inspired by active girls and celebrates them, with stylish, sporty athletic wear and experiences that connect young girls through movement and aims to inspire them to dream big!

Over the weekend in SF, ivivva offered locals fun in the sun with a tribal marker artists, a hair braiding team, photobooth, music, yoga, acro yoga, and more!

The event also featured a yoga class co-led by 11-year old Sydney, one of the youngest certified yoga instructors in the country, and local teacher Heather McKenzie, as well as inspiring speakers from ivivva’s Dreams & Goals program including ivivva Director of Brand & Community, Allison Forsyth.

Additionally, the girls participated in a POUND workout, the world’s first cardio jam session inspired by the infectious, energizing and sweat-dripping fun of playing the drums. So much fun for a Saturday in San Francisco! I love the idea behind this new line and I think it’s great that the younger set can be just as stylish and encouraged to workout, as their female role models (i.e. Mom, big sisters, etc…). Now if I only had a little girl…sigh! 😉

Getting Girls Interested in Science

I had a great opportunity to cover a partnership between two companies who are working together to get girls interested in pursuing a career in science. Green Works, you know the all-natural laundry and household cleaners, sponsored a new subscription service called StemBox. The “stem” standing for science, technology, engineering and math.

While doing my interviews, as well as writing and editing the piece it made me think back to my days as a school-age girl and where my interests lay when it came to science… Personally, I never hated science and I was and still am pretty good at math, but my desire to tell stories was stronger. I love that Green Works was created by a female scientist and that StemBox is aimed toward and specifically tailored for girls.

Baking with Kiddos on TV

gdsac1

Okay, so we didn’t actually bake. There’s only so much you can squeeze into a few minutes of TV….but the theme of the segment was gadgets and ideas on how to get kids cooking and baking this holiday, making time in the kitchen a family affair! I did this TV segment as a spokesperson for Brilliant Baby Products on Good Day (Sacramento), and I must say it was a good time.

Now, by profession I am a television host…BUT usually I am the one asking the questions and guiding the segment, rather than the “expert” or guest. In this case, I was the guest and I brought along several products and ideas, along with a couple cute kid models to help me tell the story! Haven and Jack – children of my friends…served as  my little helpers and all in all I think it went pretty well, and I can’t wait ’til I get to do it all again!

Here’s the segment if you want to check it out!

And — below I’ve listed the products I featured along with links for more info!

To Immunize or Not, that is the Question…

vaccine-bottle-syringe

The immunization “debate” has been making headlines as of late because of higher number of peoples who have measles ever since that Disneyland outbreak. It’s a touchy subject for many people…and I realize there are people on either side who feel strongly about why they do or do not give their kids the vaccines for preventable diseases like measles, mumps and rubella.

So here’s my stand, I vaccinated my kids without hesitation. It’s strongly advised by doctors, I received immunizations when I was growing up (and I’m fine)…and if I can PREVENT my child with having to ever deal with a PREVENTABLE disease, then I’m going to do it!

My heart broke when I read a story this morning of 5 babies in Chicago all being diagnosed with measles. It happened at a daycare/learning center and all 5 babies are under the age of 1, so in their case they had not received any vaccine yet because it isn’t usually administered until the reach the age of 1. But the point is they got it from somewhere…someone (who hadn’t been vaccinated) passed it to them and a possible outcome of having it is DEATH.

Think about that for a second. Not only is measles preventable, but it is passed from one person to another, then another, then another… thus causing an “outbreak,” when there is a carrier around people who are not protected from it.

Measles is a highly contagious respiratory disease. It causes fever, red and sore eyes, runny nose, cough and a rash. It can cause deadly health complications including pneumonia and encephalitis.

Measles is spread by contact with an infected person through coughing or sneezing. It can remain in the air and on surfaces for up to two hours.

And — we are lucky to have the vaccine. There are parents in so many countries who do not have access to medicine which can protect their kids. It is a LUXURY.

Okay, so I’ll get off my soapbox…but that is where I stand. So whether we’re talking about measles or the flu…if I can PROTECT my children with medicine, I will. I don’t think I could ever live with myself knowing I haven’t done all I can to keep my child safe.

Family Friendly Super Bowl Halftime

A common comment I am hearing about Katy Perry’s halftime show during Super Bowl XLIX is that it was “family friendly.” Honestly, it was, it was a great “show,” very entertaining, filled with pyro, slick special effects and larger than life animals! There was no wardrobe malfunction or uber sexed up singer…it was a pretty pop performance.

Pepsi Super Bowl XLIX Halftime Show

The lion she came out on at the beginning was fun and unexpected. In some ways it reminded me of the MGM lions crossed with a transformer. My toddlers were certainly interested to see exactly what IT was!!

katyperry

But seriously I could not take her “flaming” costume. It was just not cute to me…and in the picture above, don’t those dancers remind you of the tin man from the Wizard of Oz?? LOL! The black and white checkerboard floor was a nice illusion though, I did enjoy that.

There have already been many comparisons of her costume to that of Will Ferrell in “Blades of Glory.”

Pepsi Super Bowl XLIX Halftime Show

When California Girls took the stage, it was a fun, colorful set up, almost looking like a “Yo Gabba Gabba” show. When the dancing beach balls and sharks came up…my kids really started getting into it…we were having a halftime dance party! 😉

hot dog stick

And — another costume comparison…I think this may just be familiar to west coasters…but anyone remember Hot Dog on a Stick!! The mall food court spot for a corn dog and some fries…Katy’s getup was certainly reminiscent of that…and she had a matching mic for every outfit too!

Pepsi Super Bowl XLIX Halftime Show

Finally, my favorite part of the performance was when Missy Elliott came out. It was a refreshing changer to the tempo and wasn’t full of visual gimmicks! Those of you who are familiar with Missy’s work, know she has always been a trendsetter and someone who stepped outside the box…she looked great and the simplicity of her crews black outfits paired with those epic hip hop beats, was great!

Katy on the other hand looked like she was wearing a blinged out garbage bag…who was doing the styling for her!?!? It was horrible, I couldn’t get over that outfit! I did love Katy’s glittery shoes and that fact that she used the entire field! Overall, yes it was entertaining and fun, great for the entire family and it wasn’t a fail. However, I will not be ranking her up there with how much I enjoyed Bruno Mars, Beyonce and Michael Jackson.

All that being said, a huge shout out to my friends who were part of the show! I know some of my Arizona Cardinals Cheerleaders Alumni sisters were dancing alongside Katy Perry, with another friend of mine coming in as the “third tree”..behind the sharks of course, with more lucky enough to take the stage with Missy.
