8 Fun Family Activities in Maui

I think Maui is a great vacation destination anytime of year, whether you’re looking to travel as a couple, with friends, family or even solo! This summer, I was so excited to take my kids for the very first time, along with their Dad who had never been…plus my sisters and Mom joined us too. For me, it was my third trip to the island, and while I had already been able to explore much of the island, there was so much more I hadn’t done, and it was my first trip with my family.

When I was doing research for this trip, a couple of my main priorities for selecting activities and things to do, were age appropriateness and cost! So, now that we’re home and I’ve had some time to reflect on our fun times on the Valley Isle, I’m sharing my “8 Fun Family Activities in Maui.”

Ali’i Kula Lavender Farm – Take a drive upcountry to Kula where the temperatures are cooler and you can experience the beauty and agriculture of the island. This is an easy drive and you can spend as little or as much time as you want here (I’d say give it 2 hours). The farm’s slopes are filled with different varieties of lavender and there’s also plenty of other tropical plants decorating its landscape.

My boys had a great time embarking on the farm’s scavenger hunt, and because of it we got to explore pretty much every corner of the farm and take in all the gorgeous views. Plus, they gave us a special prize when we completed the hunt. The costs to enter Ali’i Lavender Farm is minimal and they offer a military discount too!

Strawberry Picking – If you make the drive to Kula, another fun stop is Kula Country Farms where you (and the kids) can pick your own strawberries. They also have a cute farm stand and offer island refreshments that make it worth the stop. Just pay for what you pick!

Hike to Twin Falls – One of the most popular excursions in Maui is the “Road to Hana.” I have done this drive before, and while it is beautiful and filled with awe-inspiring scenery, the thought of being in the car for 3-hours along a windy road with wiggly kids, didn’t sound like much fun… So, instead of making the entire drive we did the Twin Falls hike which is pretty much at the start of the Road to Hana.

It was a pretty easy hike and it didn’t take much time at all to get to the falls. And while I would recommend sneakers or water shoes, I managed to do it in slippers. The kids had no problem getting to it and while they wanted to jump in, I had to put the brakes on that idea. As you can see, my older son really “went out on a limb!” BTW, this also falls in the FREE category.

Nakalele Blowhole and Maui’s Heart Shaped Rock – This was a last-minute add to our agenda. We decided to trek to Lahaina for breakfast at Slappy Cakes and got the idea to check out these landmarks since we’d be on that side of the island. About 8 miles north of Kapalua, park when you see the mileage marker that says 38.5. You will literally be pulling off to the side of the road, and you will see other people doing it too. Once again I opted to keep my slippers on, but for this hike, you are literally going down on dirt and rock, so shoes are probably a better idea.

The kids were pretty amused watching the tide come in and out, and seeing how it would spout out the blowhole. We did see some pretty good ones, where they got sprayed, but catching that on camera requires a little more patience and skill than I have. Please be careful with the kids (grown ups too), when it’s a little more “active,” it can be dangerous. And, across from the blowhole you can also find a heart-shaped hole that’s formed in the middle of the rocks. LOVE!

Snorkeling – Of course when you’re on an island, going to the beach and taking part in some water activities is a must, and snorkeling is a great way to see some ocean wonders. One option is to take a snorkel boat, where you sail out to a destination with prime snorkeling conditions. On this trip we chose to sail an afternoon excursion with Pride of Maui.

This was a great decision, because we went in the afternoon  for a turtle snorkel, and didn’t have to wake up too early, and it was a shorter sail – perfect for kids, plus it was much more budget friendly for us. Food, drinks, equipment and instruction were included, and I would highly recommend it. One of the highlights of the trip was actually swimming and seeing sea turtles in the ocean! After the snorkeling and on our way back to shore, they fire up the grill and BBQ, while you can take in all the views from the open water.

Another option for a family friendly snorkel boat is Trilogy I have sailed with this tour company in the past and they provide exceptional service and experiences in Maui too. And if going on a boat isn’t your jam, there are several spots on Maui where you can swim out to a reef from shore and see all kids of sea life. We went to Ulua Beach in Wailea, where the sand is soft and the water is calm. I didn’t have to swim (walk) out very far to see tropical fish and the vibe there is very relaxing.

Hawaiian Luau – Whether it’s your first time to Hawaii or you are a regular visitor, a luau is always a good time. It’s an opportunity to learn more about Hawaiian (and Polynesian) culture, with vibrant performances, traditional island foods and (usually) an open bar! Who doesn’t love a good luau!? On this trip we took in the Te Au Moana luau in Wailea.

It was a great dinner show, where all the keiki (kids) were invited to get up on the stage and learn a little hula, plus we snapped photos with the performers after the show too!

I also splurged on these fun Hawaiian print shorts sets for my boys and they couldn’t wait to wear their festive outfits for the occasion.

Hawaiian Shave Ice – Vacation is a great time to indulge in desserts and the one dessert you can’t pass up in Hawaii is their famous shave ice! We pretty much had shave ice every day of our vacation and did a tour of a few of the many spots where you can feast on the tasty desserts.

Watch a Hawaiian Sunset – The sunsets are really gorgeous in Maui and it doesn’t cost a thing to enjoy one! We stayed on western side of Maui in Kihei, and pretty much anywhere along the shoreline made for a great spot to watch the sky and see al the colors as the sun goes down. Be sure to check what tie the sun sets, and get there at least 30 minutes ahead of time, because it moves pretty quick, and you don’t want to miss it.

Pixar Fest at the Disneyland Resort

I recently experienced a day at the Disneyland Resort for Pixar Fest and the opening of the re-imagined Pixar Pier at Disney’s California Adventure. I was lucky enough to go on a work assignment, BUT even luckier that I was able to bring my two boys and my sister with me too!

This was the first visit for myself and my boys to California Adventure. My sister had been before, so we left it up to her to navigate what we needed to experience. A huge key for us was using the Disneyland app and Fast Passes. We did like 5 rides in the first hour!

Since we were there for the pre-opening event of Pixar Pier we also got an exclusive opportunity to get up close with Edna Mode from the Incredibles and a pair of uber cute all-new Incredibles-themed Mickey ears!

When it came time for food we did a quick spin on Luigi’s Rollickin’ Roadsters before taking a (food) timeout at Flo’s V8 Cafe.

The line at Flo’s was pretty long, but I used the app to order while we were in line, and then promptly got out of line and went straight to the pickup counter to get our grub and sit down to eat. I can’t stress enough how easy and convenient it was to use the app to order food. It also has options to order for a future time and it will be ready when you arrive at the restaurant. It’s a total game changer…

At the new Pixar Pier we loved the Incredicoaster and Toy Story Midway Mania, we got some yummy treats too Snowman Frozen Treats and Jack-Jack Cookie Num Nums!!

When the sun goes down and you’re looking for an attraction to “wow” you, don’t miss the “Paint The Night” parade. It has all of your Disney favorites with a brand new Incredibles float too! It’s pretty mesmerizing…

So, my tips…use the app – take advantage of the fast passes and order your food on it, take lots of photos (this can also be done on your app with park photographers), and have fun! Before you go, do your research and know what rides you want to experiences and if you and your littles can all meet the ride requirements. Check out the full segment I hosted for ABC7 here.

Party Invites ONLINE!

Copy of ALL ACCESS PASS

I am a fan of online (event) invitations. The ease of creating an event invite, tracking responses and even updating/changing event details as needed, makes it very easy. Plus, I don’t have to worry about printing anything, envelopes, postage and getting to the post office, etc… That being said, I do also like setting the “tone” if you will for my event. I’m big on presentation and playing up a theme, and when I can flex my novice design skills + have the time, I like to see what I can whip up.

Well, it’s now the time of year when my boys will be celebrating another birthday milestone, and since they are such big basketball fans, I wanted to create an invitation that captures their enthusiasm for their favorite basketball team. I found some inspiration online and made a custom invite that looks like a ticket to a basketball game. I pondered printing them out and using snail mail, but that’s when I discovered Paperless Post has an “Upload Your Own” feature. BINGO!

The only issue was that my custom ticket design didn’t quite fit the preferred dimensions on the upload your own tool, so I thought the idea would be awash…But lo and behold, I reached out to their customer service to see if they could give me an “assist” (pun intended), and within 24 hours, they adjusted the dimensions to accommodate my design. A total SLAM DUNK!

Great Pumpkin Fest at Great America

IMG_6862

I don’t even know where to start, but I will say that if you’re a Bay Area parent and you want to celebrate the “Halloween” season with your kids… GREAT AMERICA should be at the top of your list! We had an amazing weekend and it all kicked off with the Great Pumpkin Fest at Great America, where every weekend from now til the end of October, the park, (from noon -4pm) will be extra fun-filled with its Great Pumpkin Fest event…and it’s all included with admission. The park is open from 10am-5:30pm for daytime excitement.

A post shared by Aubrey Aquino (@fifty3weeks) on

The Great Pumpkin Fest is a non-scary daytime event for everyone in the family to enjoy, including even your youngest boo-thangs! And- yes, they still have their night time “grown up” very scary “Halloween Haunt” event too! All activites take place in Planet Snoopy alongside all the mainstay rides and attractions that you’re used to seeing at Great America. Children 12 and under are also encouraged to wear a costume (masks are not allowed).

FullSizeRender

Okay, so that’s the nuts and bolts, let me share some of our experience with you…

IMG_6858 IMG_6849 IMG_6863

Snoopy, Lucy, Charlie Brown, Sally, etc.. the whole gang is dressed (in costume) for the occasion, and for parent’s that means LOTS of photo opps!

IMG_6854

And — with said “photo opps” there are trick or treat stations set up, where kids will get a bag and candy…

IMG_6857

They have a foam “dance” pit…and as you can see, my “ninja turtle” definitely got his feet wet! LOL

IMG_6865

Now while my older son jumped head first into the bubbling foam dance pit, my younger son opted to take advantage of the coloring station. Other activities include a hay maze and a TV screening area where guests can take a break and relax while watching, “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown”…book readings of the PEANUTS tale also go on in Planet Snoopy.

IMG_6871

One activity you definitely want to take advantage of is the mini-pumpkin decorating. Kids can select their own complimentary mini-pumpkin from the patch and they receive a decorating kit to make it their own and take home!

The PEANUTS gang also puts on a musical performance tailored to the Halloween theme… a PEANUTS “Spooktacular.” **Heads up..they’re on the lookout for the best kid costumes in the crowd.

IMG_6877 IMG_6868

But maybe what I loved most about our awesome day at Great America’s Great Pumpkin Fest was that while we were able to celebrate the season, we also got to enjoy all the staple rides at the park, like the double-decker carousel and Loggers Run. The lines were short and the weather was perfect. This event gave us the opportunity to “kill many birds” with one visit! From costume contests, to trick or treating, character visits, a dance party, hay maze, pumpkin patch and amusement park rides…it was certainly a GREAT day to remember!

Kindergarten School Days

k1

Time flies! We’re just about 4 weeks into the school year and my older son’s foray into Kindergarten. Overall, he’s enjoying it and things are going pretty well. Here’s a look back  into our first 4 weeks…

k

First day of school went very smooth, Raef was excited to see some friends he already knew from ARPD Tiny Tots as well as TBall and day care programs. He lined up first by his classroom too!

A post shared by Aubrey Aquino (@fifty3weeks) on

This year we didn’t do any official back to school shopping, but we did purchase a new backpack (TMNT) and his one request was to have his name on it, so we got it embroidered..and it was well worth it!

k2

Eagle Eye!! At his school they award “eagle eye” recognition for children who are seen following directions, listening attentively, being kind, etc… Raef was the first one in his kindergarten class to receive this award and he was also recognized in front of the entire school during the Wednesday morning meeting.

k3 k4

Back to School Night was nice, I made sure to ask his teacher what supplies and/or extras she would like to make this year easier. We got lots of info about all-day kindergarten and what types of curriculum that will be taught. It was also fun to see Raef’s self portrait hanging up on the wall in his class. *Note – We are still learning ways to manage with the after school “emotions” and meltdowns, as well as trying to implement an earlier bedtime.

k5

A trip to the dentist was also on the agenda. Both my boys had their semi-annual teeth cleanings, and while Raef doesn’t have any cavities, we need to stay on top of it so he doesn’t get any! One plus of his teacher is that she doesn’t allow any sweets, no candy, cookies, chips, etc… Unhealthy snacks get sent home, so that helps me keep his sugar to a minimum.

k6

Finally, with this week came picture day. I can totally remember “picture day” being such a big deal, what to wear, how to fix my hair…but for a 5-year old boy maybe not such a big thing, right? Well, mine actually wanted a certain haircut and proceeded to carry his comb around with him, even as we attended the birthday party of one of his classmates the evening before…lol! His Dad attended his first PTA meeting and we may’ve also lost our first jacket. At any rate, we’re enjoying the start of the school-age ride and can’t wait to see what comes next!

5 Fun Kid Stops in San Diego

sd5

Right before school kicked in, we took a trip south to visit San Diego. In 4 days and 3 nights we found some great spots to hang out with the kiddos, that were fun for the whole family!

sd

1. Seaport Village – Take a nice walk along the San Diego Bay and take in the beautiful views as you make your way along Harbor Drive to Seaport Village. We began our walk with brunch in the Gaslamp district before walking around Petco Park (home of the San Diego Padres), then toward the water and up to Seaport Village’s cute strip of shops and restaurants, centered around a gazebo where we ran into some live music and fun vibes. Keep walking north of Seaport Village and you’ll run into the USS Midway Museum at Navy Pier.

sd1

2. Sea World San Diego – It’s the perfect combination of sea life and thrill rides. The boys enjoyed several up close encounters with the animals, and also got their fix of amusement park rides. We went to the park on a Monday and while it was busier than we expected, wait times were easy and we covered the entire park and took in the dolphin show too.

sd2 sd6

3. Coronado Beach – Out of all my visits to San Diego over the years, one place I had yet to visit was Coronado Island, so I decided to make the short trek across the bridge to check out Coronado Beach. The sand is powdery fine and soft, it’s littered with gorgeous gold flecks. There’s a huge beach area before you get to the water and there’s plenty of room to play. My children got a kick out of searching for seashells in the sand and the occasional navy air craft that would pass overhead.

sd3

4. Mission Valley – We stayed in the Mission Valley area where there are many options for accommodations. The location is central to so many places and was very convenient to downtown and the Gaslamp district, Mission Bay, Balboa Park and Old Town. There are many of the familiar strip mall stores and restaurants, and an open air shopping mall to hang out at too. The boys couldn’t resist taking their turn at the lifesize chess board at the mall.

sd4

5. Mission Bay – Our last stop on this San Diego visit was to Mission Bay. We rented a surrey to check out the sights and rode it along the Bay. All that pedaling worked up our appetites, so we walked toward Mission Beach where we enjoyed yummy burgers at Coaster Bar & Grill. The grill is located right off Mission Beach and across from Belmont Park. Belmont Park has a fair number of amusement rides and fair food, plus a fun arcade for the kids to burn off some energy.

Decorating A Family Home

Brushing the wall by people

Your home is your own corner of heaven — a place where your family members will interact, enjoy quality time together, and share important events; the nest in which you’ll raise your children; the palace you’ll return to whenever you need comfort and calm. A family home is a space for traditions and heirlooms, to-do lists and laundry, and sticky fingerprints that are frequently removed from the walls. It’s a collection of rooms that are familiar and beloved; a shelter from harm. Your home is your world, and decorating it can become something of a labor of love.

Five top tips for the perfect family home

Decorating a home is a personal endeavor, during which the needs and desires of each family member should be taken into consideration. However, if you’re stuck for inspiration consider the following tips your starting blocks…

Put functionality to the fore

Before you begin waving color charts or wielding brushes, consider how each room of your home is to be used, and how you can preserve the functionality of the space. For example, your kitchen will require plenty of clear surfaces and storage space, while the bedrooms should be reserved for moments of calm and restfulness. Decorating your home should be as much about furniture and accessories as it is the shades you’ll be using — ensure you’re creating a home that works for your growing family.

Be bold and bright

Decorating a family home is a fantastic opportunity to experiment with colors, patterns, and shapes; if you can’t mess around with primary colors and geometrics when you’re raising a young family, when can you? A family home should be bright and friendly, fun and practical. If you’re nervous at the thought of applying bold colors, consider using wall decals, borders, and colored soft furnishings to add character to each room. These can be changed at regular intervals, allowing your family home to grow and change as its occupants flourish.

Make the most of natural light

Natural light is one of the greatest resources we have access to, and yet so few of us make the most of the sunlight that bursts into our homes on a daily basis. Sunlight has the ability to brighten the smallest of spaces, lighten those dark, unfriendly nooks, and make even the pokiest of spaces appear large and welcoming; it’s a miracle worker that so many homeowners have yet to harness. Installing plantation shutters is a great way to make the most of natural light, controlling its flow in and out of the home, and helping to regulate the temperature during periods of extreme heat or chill – oh, and they look incredible, too.

Get smart with storage

It doesn’t matter how carefully you decorate your home — if it’s filled with clutter, few people will notice the consideration you’ve paid to color. If you’ve decided to decorate your home, dedicate a little of that time to the kinds of storage you have available. Can you get rid of a little clutter along the way? Are you really making the most of the space you have available? Funky toy boxes and hanging baskets are fantastic for children’s toys and belongings, while cupboards under the stairs are seldom used to their full potential.

Don’t be afraid to decorate it with love

Finally, never allow yourself to be ruled by home décor sites or mood boards; your home is a safe haven from the world outside, and should be decorated to reflect your family’s passions, characters, and quirks. By all means take inspiration from elsewhere, but don’t let yourself be dissuaded from hanging your children’s artwork, or allowing your little people to choose how they decorate their rooms. Stamp your family members’ personalities on those walls, and ensure that decorating your home becomes a real group effort — your family home should show a little piece of everyone.

The colors, patterns, and accessories that you choose to adorn your home are, of course, up to you. When decorating your family home, you can pay as much, or as little, notice to sites such as Instagram and Pinterest as you wish. What really matters at this point is your budget and determining how your family will be using those spaces over the coming years. Make your mark, allow your children’s personalities and creativity to shine through, and always, always, strive to make yours a happy home. It’s the least your family deserves.

Bay Area Summer Stop: Muir Woods with Kids

muir

The boys and I trekked over to Marin for a hike through Muir Woods. I had always heard about Muir Woods and the giant redwoods, but I had never actually made the trip, so I figured it would be a fun day trip to do with my boys. My sister and her 2-month old baby boy also joined us for the excursion. I didn’t do much research before our visit, I had a decent idea of where to go and what to expect…so I went with it!

muir1

Muir Woods is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, and it’s known for its giant redwood trees! My boys have a thing right now where they’re trying to understand measurements and anything “100 tall” is as big as it gets, so I figured they’d get a kick out of these super tall trees…plus, we’d all get a workout in!

muir4

One of the thing I really appreciated about the main trail is that the beginning is made up of a wood boardwalk and the terrain is easy to navigate. Although it was a very sunny day, once you get inside, the trees provide lots of cover and shade and it can get a little cool, so be sure to layer. However, I loved that it was a comfortable walk with a few different choices of places to hike and 3 different bridges you could cross to tailor the length and duration of your hike.

fabl2 fabl1

I’m not a usual hiker, but I figured I’d sport my favorite Fabletics workout gear. Yes, I’m wearing a fanny pack …and yes, I’m “posing” in the woods. Both of those photos are courtesy of my 4-year old. These pants are great for just about any workout and hiking too, and equal parts fashion and function! I love the mesh panels in the back of these pants because it’s fashionable, comfortable and keeps me cool. I’ve gotten numerous compliments while out and about while wearing Fabletics and the price point is affordable too!

muir3

My guys had a great time on the trail running ahead of me and my sister…the terrain is easy enough where my sister wore her baby and I didn’t have to worry too much about my boys slipping and falling… If you’re quiet (my boys have issues with noise control), you can even hear the water running through the center of the woods.

muir2 muir5

They got a kick out of looking for sticks along the way and seeing how many “holes” they could find within the wood fence lining the groves of trees. There was also one tree that was still standing and hollowed out where they could stand inside to get a feeling for the depth and size of the trees.

muir6

All in all, it’s a great day or even half-day trip. The drive out there on Highway 1 is pretty curvy, so be sure to allow for extra time to get out there, and we’ve heard the nearby parking lots can get pretty packed. We went around 11am on a weekday and didn’t have an issue. Restrooms are located near the parking lot and also once you enter Muir Woods near the cafe. Yes, there is a cafe and gift shop there, so it’s a nice place to check out after your hike. We actually packed some lunch and found a nice bench to enjoy our food before driving home. If you haven’t checked it out, make sure to put this one on your list of things to do with the kids!

Spiderman Birthday Party

spider

Two parties in six days, that was my life this past week. We started with TMNT for my 5-year old, and finished the birthday week with SPIDERMAN for my now 4-year old.

spider8 spider2

We chose to have this party at a complex near us, called Bladium. The nice thing about Bladium is that you can choose what activities the kids can do during your party. We chose Rock Climbing as our main activity the first hour, then for the second hour they moved us into another area where the kid’s had use of the basketball court and a giant inflatable slide!

spider9

At this venue, all the parties are done in 2 hour blocks and they include pizza and drinks for the kids. I liked that they allowed us to bring additional food (aside from pizza) to serve to our guests. They assign you a party host who stays with you and watches all the kids during your event.

spider7

When it came to the cake, I got ours at Safeway and elected for the cupcake cake! We had both white and chocolate cake and what I like about these cakes is that you don’t need a knife, just pull it apart!

spider4

I didn’t go all out on decor for this party, I had a themed tablecloth, plates and napkins…but I did make the “happy birthday” banner that I found at this website.

spider6

What I did do though is get a pinata, which was hung from the basketball hoop and it was a big hit with all the kids!

spider1

We also sent pour guests home with their own “Spidey Web.” I picked up Goofy String from Dollar Tree and transformed the cans with this printable. It was super easy and a big it with the kids..I just had to politely ask them to wait until they got home to start spraying!

spider3

So, now I’m birthday party planned out…until next year, I’ll have two very happy super heroes!

TMNT Birthday Party

TMNT3

Cowabunga dude! The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are BIG in my house…and TMNT was the chosen theme for my older son who just turned 5! When it came to choosing a venue for the party, I chose the East Oakland Sports Center. They have an amazing indoor aquatic area and a roomy party room just off the pool. Since his birthday is in the summer, I figured a swim party would be the perfect way to celebrate…and it truly was a big hit!

TMNT8

We picked the perfect day to host the party, and while there was a public swim session, it wasn’t too packed and very comfortable for our guests. The pool and swim areas were very same and since the majority of our swimmers being about 5 years old, the depth at their height was perfect. Also, they have a great staff that’s very accommodating and lifeguards who kept a watchful eye on all the kids on the pool deck.

TMNT1

When it came to decor, I used a lot of these well-designed party printables, like the welcome sign, cupcake toppers, favor tags and pizza banner!

TMNT7

I created a long table for the kids to sit at and covered them with plastic green table cloths and a store bought ninja turtle table decor set, and I used the ninja turtle face plates, party blowouts and coordinating napkins to liven up the decor!

TMNT5

As far as food for the party, I kept it simple with pizza – of course ninja turtles and kids (grownups too), love a cheesy pie. I did an easy fruit salad, veggie platter, chips, crackers and some chicken and swiss cheese rollers to complete the spread. It was just the right amount for that post swim hunger.

TMNT6

I also purchased a TMNT themed “scene setter” to serve as a backdrop for photos..kids love the life size characters, and it helps brighten up empty wall space.

TMNT2

I ordered the cake at Food Maxx, where they printed out an edible ninja turtle print.

TMNT4

One of my favorite elements for the party were our favors! I found these foam “nun chucks” at Dollar Tree, added a thank you label, and it was the perfect compliment to our party theme.

TMNT9

Needless to say, we all had an awesome time… Thanks to all our friends who joined in the fun and celebrated with us!
