Party Time + Invitation Options

My boy’s’ birthday’s are in T-2 months and it’s time to get the ball rolling on the party planning…or at least having a “plan.” I am definitely a “planner,” especially when it comes to things I can control, like the birthday festivities and knowing what we want to do makes it much easier on me, because as we all know…time flies and these yearly milestones happen so fast!

When it comes to a venue, you’ll probably need to reserve your space with much notice…most of these places that regularly host kid’s parties book up months in advance. If you use a local park, those reservations can book up quick too, especially when it comes to weekends and warm weather. There are many advantages to having it at home, but that’s an individual decision. Things to consider when booking are cost, convenience and the number of guests…availability can sometimes be a factor too if the date and times you wanted is already booked, so get on it early.

In the past, I’ve created fun invitations using templates I’ve found online, that fit the theme and then we personalize with all our details. I’ve done both printing it out and using snail mail, but also emailing all our guests and attaching the “invitation.” Last year, we used an online invitation website, which is also very easy, there are different designs you can select and then all you need to do is enter the details. What I like about online invitation services is that they keep track of all your guests, who has opened aka viewed it, guests can add comments AND you can easily make any changes to the invitation and/or send out updates if there are any last minute changes or special instructions.

Earlier this year, when hosting my sister’s baby shower, she suggested we use an online service called Paperless Post. Paperless Post has both online invitations, as well as cards for every occasion. Their designs look more like beautiful stationary than computer graphics. You can add photos and envelopes as well, so basically you save the tree, but still offer the “thrill” of getting something in the mail and opening it up! You can also opt to print hard copies and send them out the more traditional way too.

Whichever method you choose to get the word out about your fiesta, be sure to check it (at least) twice. Make sure you have all the important info date, time and place – I recently had a friend who ordered beautiful invitations for her son’s 1st birthday, but she left off the date, so she sent out a second invite with the date…that’s double the stamps. Also be sure to make sure the contact info is included. I think its great to use email, but sometimes a phone number is super helpful for kid’s parties because well, when you’re a parent…things happen!

Chabot Space and Science Center

IMG_1388

In my quest for new and fun things to do with my young boys, I came across the Chabot Space and Science Center in Oakland. It’s located in the hills about Oakland, nestled among huge redwood trees! I wasn’t sure if my children would be too young to enjoy a science center, but I knew they do cater to children and my curiosity was peeked to see what they have to offer.

IMG_1368 IMG_1371

Unexpectedly, my kids had a blast, from the moment we walked into the first room, they quickly took to the exhibits, standing in the black light – learning about “nebulae,” to gazing into telescopes and getting their first peek into outer space. The thing about museums or centers like this, is that while there’s always lots of signage with instructions and info – that my young sons can’t read yet, everything is hands on. And, even if they don’t quite understand the universe, it’s not a bad idea to introduce these things early, and just let them explore!

We visited on  Wednesday morning in early June, so we pretty much had the place to ourselves. There was at least one school field trip group there, but the place is big enough that we still felt like we had our run of the center.

IMG_1379

There was also a fun “discovery” room, where school group are not allowed. My boys gave their hand at building with huge lego blocks and spent some time with hard hats piecing together wood construction pieces too.

IMG_1384

One of their favorite attractions was this huge scream box where you could stand inside and just let it ALL out! Scream at the very top of your lungs and watch the sound waves on the screen while your “screaming” photo is captured.

IMG_1386IMG_1390

Other highlights of this Bay Area summer stop were the astronaut and space station exhibits – I was surprised to hear my (2 year old) younger son use the term astronaut and show me that he already was familiar with astronauts!

IMG_1394

Overall, it was a fun ride. We spent little more than 2 hours there, capping our visit off with a movie in the planetarium. It was a cartoonish video about kids who journey to outer space in a cardboard rocketship…and we visited all the planets!

Toddlers x Weddings

Screen Shot 2016-05-12 at 4.06.15 PM

A toddler can add that little something extra to just about any event. Perhaps it’s the instant enthusiasm, never ending energy or just that wide-eyed innocence and the unassuming personality, but whatever it is, when there’s a toddler around, nothing is certain.

One event toddlers aren’t always welcome at is a wedding, many times these are “adult only” events, which is totally fine by me. However, my boys have had the opportunity to attend and be a part of two weddings already in their toddlerhood! Last year one of my sisters got married, and just last month, my brother also took the plunge. And — since we are family and my boys are the only nephews…they got to be ring bearers for each occasion.

FullSizeRender

All that being said, my littles did great for both events, but I’m not gonna lie, it was slightly stressful for me to manage two super-active ring bearers. Some of the worries I had were, would they cooperate and wear the fancy clothes? Could they follow instructions and carry a pillow down the aisle? Are they going to smile for pictures? How will they fare during the ceremony?

I think everyone understands – or at least they should, that they are kids who can still count their number of years in this world on one hand, so imperfect behavior is acceptable. However, since I’ve now experienced 2 weddings with my 2 ring bearers, I figured I’d offer my tips on how to make the pairing of toddlers and weddings a little easier for the Moms (and Dads) in charge!

Screen Shot 2016-05-12 at 4.05.18 PM

Wait to change them. We didn’t stay at the hotel where the wedding was taking place, but I knew better than to put them in their “fancy” clothes before we got to the venue. Kids will be kids, and in my case, boys will be boys. I held off as long as I could before putting them in their monkey suits.

Plan their attire. In our case(s), the brides pretty much gave me some input on what they wanted the boys to wear, but they left it to me to make the ultimate decision. In our more recent wedding, it was a bit more formal, so I chose to keep the boys in slacks, vest and (clip on) bow ties with canvas sneakers, as opposed to jacket and dress shoes.

Talk it out. A lot of times, we don’t think our kids are paying attention, but they can hear you loud and clear. How they choose to respond is an entirely different subject. I found it really helped to start talking about the event way before it ever happened. Prep them for what to expect and get them excited about what it will look like, who’s going to be there and how important their job is at the event.

Screen Shot 2016-05-12 at 4.05.53 PM

Practice makes perfect. Well, practice helps, but you can never really be sure how they will react when the spotlight is on them. However, talking over the “directions,” walking it through at the venue and going over it a few times should make a difference. Note — my guys were easy breezy at the rehearsal, but when all the flower petals were laid, the music was playing and the room was full, they got a bit overwhelmed.

Pack snacks. If you have a toddler, this is a given all the time, and a wedding is no exception. I only wished I had stashed a couple applesauce packets or some fruit snacks in my purse during the ceremony… But yeah, sometimes the wait between ceremony and dinner reception can be a little much for your munchkin, so be prepared. We actually had leftover pizza from lunch to hold them over and then after the ceremony made sure to get them some crackers and juice to hold them over.

Don’t be too serious. It’s a wedding, it’s a “grown up” event, but be careful not to put too much pressure on a toddler or yourself. Chances are if they are in a wedding at such a young age they are family or very close to the bride and groom, and they will understand. Now, one of mine will probably provide some of the soundtrack to my brother’s ceremony, as he was a little overcome by his duties, but it’ll be okay.

Screen Shot 2016-05-12 at 4.05.35 PM

Be prepared for tears. Both of mine displayed a bit of waterworks at separate times during our last wedding event. One was embarrassed and let all his emotion go, while the other was caught off guard with the clapping and cheering when the bride was kissed and the new couple announced. So, have the tissue on tap because if you’re toddlers don’t need it, someone else in the crowd might.

Now, when it’s all said and done, have fun, let loose and take it out on the dance floor!

My Friend’s Child has Cancer…and it Hurts

Bad things happen to good people. What do you say when you find out a friend has been given a cancer diagnosis for her baby daughter? What can you do? How is it supposed to feel? These are questions that have been swirling in my head, ever since finding out my friend’s daughter is sick. I saw the Facebook post asking for prayers and I saw that they were (checked in) at a children’s hospital, and I knew something was very wrong. But, just the day before I saw the cute photo of her little girl playfully enjoying a sweet dessert, while out with the family.

All those quotes and sayings of how quickly life can take a turn and change for better (or worse), or that life is a gift and you only live once…

When I eventually got word of what had happened to turn their world upside down, I was speechless. They had to see a pediatric oncologist, that’s all I needed to hear. I believe that I am a good friend to a lot of people and I want to be the friend who is always available to lend an ear, a hand or a shoulder to cry on, but for the first time I didn’t know quite what to say. I kept my response brief, letting her know that I am thinking of her and her family, they are in my prayers and should they need anything, I am here.

Thankfully, they are loved with a huge network of family and friends, there is no shortage of prayers, support or well-wishes, and I am simply in awe of their composure, bravery and grace in what will be a very emotional and tough road ahead. However, there’s still a feeling inside me that wishes there was more I can do, instead of simply being inspired by their display of positivity and faith… And so, I decided I would write a letter to my friend and share it here on my blog.

#PrayForOurSamar #SamarStrong
#PrayForOurSamar #SamarStrong

Dear Anna,

My heart goes out to you and your family. I keep sitting here and thinking how difficult it must be, to learn your newly turned 2 daughter has tumors in her body. I remember when you prayed for her and you were doubtful you would be able to have a second child, and now here you are with 3, still on maternity leave from the birth of your third blessing.

You have always inspired me in ways you probably never knew. I’m so glad to have met you in college, not only do we share the same cultural background, but we pursued the same major and have remained good friends to this day. From traveling together to setting out on this journey of life, finding work in different states, we’ve always managed to only be a phone call away. We have shared so many good times together, a few not so good too, but what stands out to me is your smile, your infectious personality and positive attitude. I have witnessed you working hard to create a career for yourself, persevering to be with the love of your life and now fighting to have the family you always wanted.

I think it’s a combination of the fact that I am a fellow mommy, but also that you are a special friend to me. My heart is broken, I’m hurting for you and your little girl. I can’t begin to imagine the range of emotions you feel, and the countless thoughts crossing your mind, heart and spirit. And I know now is not the time for you to comfort anyone else…

I promise to keep your baby and your family in my prayers. I will send texts of support. I will like, love and comment on posts, because I know you and your husband say it’s those little things that mean so much. I will listen if you need my ear.

But you must know that even in this short time that everything has happened and while you and your family continue to process the tremendous weight that’s been placed on your shoulders, I am already learning so much from you. Cherish your loved ones. Enjoy each moment we share with our children. Be brave, don’t be afraid to ask for prayers, support and love, that it’s okay to let others know what you’re going through.

I know that God is on your side. You are so strong and you need me to be strong too. Know that you are loved and you have a prayer warrior in me. Love you girl.

xoxo

Fun SoCal Stops with Kids

IMG_0340

On our recent trip to SoCal (we live in NorCal), the main focus of our trip was Anaheim aka Disneyland! There’s may ways to enjoy Orange County and while a trip to the Disneyland Resort and theme parks can easily fill more than a few days, there is more to do and see in the area. A couple of my good girlfriends live in the area and since we were there… we visited with them, and they also provided the ideas on a couple of family-friendly fun spots the kids were sure to enjoy.

image1

First up the Irvine Spectrum Center. Located in Irvine, this is essentially an outdoor shopping mall…BUT it has so much more. Beyond the shops, there’s an awesome (free) outdoor play area resembling a pirate ship.

IMG_0335

There’s also a Carousel, Giant Wheel and Kiddie Train. You have to purchase tickets to enjoy these attractions, we chose to test out the carousel.

IMG_0352

And — when it comes to food choices. There are several restaurants at the center, from fast, food-court style options to casual sit down and more sophisticated dining too. We ended up at Red Robin, hence the balloons! I spied more than few sweet/dessert spots too.

image2

My friends both commented how it’s a nice place to hang out in the summer when the days are hot and the nights stay warm. There’s lots of room for the kids to roam and open grass areas too.

IMG_0380

What visit to Southern California would be complete without a trek to the beach! Being there at the end of February, you never know if it’ll be warm enough to go, but since we had rockin’ weather, we decided to bust out the swimwear and hit the coast. My friend recommended Corona del Mar Beach at Inspiration Point, which is in the Newport Beach area.

IMG_0365

It was a beautiful stretch of sand, and the waves were perfect for our toddlers. Since technically it was still winter, there wasn’t much of a crowd and we had lots of room to play. The water was cold, but you know kids, they don’t care! So they got their feet wet, jumped some waves and played around. Good thing Dad was game to go in… I got to sit in the sand and just watch.

IMG_0371 IMG_0378

There is a parking lot adjacent to the beach, but we just parked along Ocean Blvd. It is a residential street, but we found free parking no problem. We also got in some good exercise because it’s a very long steep staircase down from the street down to the beach and then the climb back up too.

IMG_0366

Overall, so glad we got the chance to explore off the Disneyland strip and enjoy more of what SoCal has to offer.

Snow Play at Spicer Sno Park

One of the great things about living in (Northern) California is having all kinds of “nature” at your doorstep. You can head to the coast for some beach time, or hit the hills and trails for a hike….there’s also the Sierra Nevada’s which provide for some awesome SNOW PLAY!!

IMG_0172

Personally, I’m not much of a cold weather person. I’ve been fortunate to grow up and live in places where it really doesn’t ever snow, so that has worked out well for me. I have gone skiing and tried my hand at snowboarding, but at the end of the day, I’m gonna be okay if I never do either again.

IMG_0161

However, because I believe in doing my best to expose my kids to new experiences and trying to cultivate family time activities, I made it a point for us to enjoy the “El Nino” snow, that’s just a short drive away. Last year my boys did get to see snow for the first time while we were living in Virginia, but I must say, snow in California is something special.

IMG_0171

I did my due diligence in researching areas which weren’t far from home, didn’t have a big price tag and could provide us with a fun day of snow play! The big thing around the Bay Area is Lake Tahoe, but if you don’t aim so far north and think more direct east….you can avoid the Tahoe traffic, and find lots of areas to enjoy too!

IMG_0158

In our case I chose the Spicer Sno Park – I have no idea why there is no “w,” but that’s how it’s listed. The California State Park system has 18 Sno-Parks to choose from in Northern California and the only cost is a $5 parking permit you can buy online or at designated locations on the way to your destination. Here’s a link to the map >> http://ohv.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=24867

IMG_0162

Since we have toddlers and didn’t want to drive more than a few hours, we chose Spicer, off Highway 4. The play area has an ample parking lot and portable restroom on site. There was plenty of room to play, and you could take your pick of smaller hills, or steeper ones to slide down. We brought our own snow Saucers that I purchased at Big 5 before we left the Bay Area. And, everyone there pretty much knew the drill to bring their own sleds, toboggans or discs. Find more snow gear here.

IMG_0193

All in all, it was a good day. We stayed for a couple ours to play and then went right back home. I also made/edited my first ever video mash up of the day, using iMovie on my iPhone! Press play below…

A Convenience Store Outing

What is it about men and convenience stores? I don’t think I’m going out on a limb when I say that convenience stores stay in business because of numbers of male customers that patronize them on the regular. I have 2 toddlers, and I’m already seeing that they will uphold the tradition of men being in the convenience store.

We live just a few blocks off from a 7-11 store and so when we walk to school or around the neighborhood, my boys are always quick to point out that they went there with Daddy to buy ice cream or juice. Surprise, Surprise…LOL!

Screen Shot 2016-02-09 at 3.06.06 PM

Anyway, on one walk home from preschool the other week, my 3-year old reminded me that I said earlier (at drop off) that I would bring some money and we could stop in there on the way home. Well, since he didn’t forget, I had to be a Mom of my word. He knew he wanted cookies and they way he scanned the aisle checking everything was so reminiscent of “men” I’ve seen doing the same thing. Pondering those big decisions…haha!

Finally, he did settle on a pack of Chips Ahoy cookies and as I instructed him to take it to the counter to pay, he said, “No Mommy, I need to get  drink too!” Okay!!? I give up…I just about died inside, knowing he was mimicking what his Dad does…snack and a drink! I let them know we won’t do this everyday, but that day the treat was on me.

I’m a Certified BOY MOM

I’m a Mom to 2 boys…and there are things they do and say that let me know they are ALL boy. As a disclaimer, I don’t have girls, so I’m not trying to generalize (or polarize) that these points only apply to boys, or that they’re representative of all boys, BUT for me, these 5 points clearly point to the fact that my egg was fertilized with a Y-chromosome on two separate occasions!

I try to do some “research” and compare notes with my fellow Moms…girl Moms if you will, and the consensus seems to show that my theory on if I had girls, we would be sitting around playing tea or dress up, would probably be true.

3boys

However, that’s not my experience (to date). My days are filled with high-impact energy and playing the zone, along with lots of “potty” talk and curious questions from the moment they open their eyes, until they use their last ounces of energy trying to fight bed time.

These are my TOP 5 tell-tale signs that I am a certified BOY MOM:

  • Dirt don’t hurt – My boys do not mind being dirty, there’s no hesitation when it comes to sticky, dirty, sweaty, wet, etc… I’m usually chasing them down with sanitizer or constantly dishing out instruction to wash hands. And – only my 2-year old is still in diapers, and he’ll tell me he’s got a dirty one, but that doesn’t always mean he wants me to change it! :/
  • Couch jumping – Nothing like couch surfing, one of my guys’ favorite pastimes is figuring out how to jump from couch to couch or climb up on the family room furniture, only to jump, dive, roll and launch off of said furniture onto the ground…and repeat!
  • Fart and Poop factors – Two of their favorite words, and the bonus is the act of producing a fart! If you’re gonna be a mom to a boy, it just comes with the territory. I’ve tried my best to play it off (once they discovered these words), and not pay it much mind or act like they are buzzwords, but it’s just like they know! They will find creative ways to use either term in a sentence or even put them in their favorite songs. When it comes to fart-ing…well, one does not like to be outdone by the other!
  • Energizer bunnies – My two rarely sit still, they are constantly moving. I’m always on the lookout for activities and ideas to keep them stimulated and busy. I love taking them outside for walks or to the playground to let them run around and work off some energy, but a lot of times I am the one run down before them. They just keep going and going….
  • Wrestlemania – There’s a lot of rough play…all day! Paired with the furniture jumping, I feel like a referee in the octagon or in a WWF ring. It’s one thing when they rough house with Dad, but my body isn’t quite as rugged and my tummy (when they both came out on c-sections) is a little more sensitive. However, that doesn’t stop them from using me for leverage or as a stepping stone/ladder to get from point A to point B.

Okay, so how’d I do? Anyone out there, can you relate?  If you don’t have boys or maybe your boys aren’t quite so “typical” boy… this may not sound all that exciting, but actually, I look forward to it everyday. I feel like between the two of mine, I easily get in a daily workout and there is NEVER a dull moment.

2boys

And — did I mention how somewhere along the way, my boys have taken up picking wildflowers when we’re on a walk, to give to Mommy!?! I’m not saying that lets me know I am a boy Mom, but there’s definitely something about my baby boys presenting me with a flower that melts my heart every single time!

You’ve heard the term, “Boys will be boys.” I’m not gonna sugar coat it, it’s a busy, BUSY whirlwind life while trying to manage two very independent little men, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

My Pick for Overnight Diapers

diapers

It’s finally that time of night where I have a moment to myself. The kids are in bed and I’m not quite ready to go…so what to do in my free time but write a new post on the blog! And as I’m thinking of what to write about, all that comes across my mind is diapers…and my choice for what works best at night.

I wish it wasn’t even an issue, or a situation I had come to know very well. Toddler boys who have wet the bed because their diaper didn’t last the advertised “12-hours” on the box. There are probably other solutions I could have tried to alleviate the pee problem – like nothing to drink after a certain time, but even still, my boys have tended to pee A LOT in the overnight hours!

I’m down to just one child in diapers, so I’ve had discussions with other boy moms who’ve run into the same problem over the past couple years, one even has used super maxi pads to soak up the excess and have a drier night! At the end of the day (or night in this case), a drier diaper quite possibly could result in undisturbed sleep, less laundry/cleanup and fewer (regular) diapers.

At any rate, for those of you who aren’t even aware…YES, there are “overnight diapers” that are extra absorbant and designed just for extended wear overnight. They are pricier than regular diapers and many of the brands offer overnight versions of their diapers. When you get to the “pull up” stage, those come in an overnight variety too! I’ve tried 4 different types of these diapers and I’ll rank them from least favorite to my #1 pick!

4. Pampers Baby Dry Extra Protection – I’m a big fan of pampers (and their Gifts to Grow Rewards program), but their “extra protection” aka overnight diapers, really didn’t cut it for me. Yes, they have the same softness you’d expect from Pampers and when it comes to regular diapers, Baby Dry is my first choice…but I’ve had one too many leaks and wet jammies/beds when using these, plus they’re at the highest price point of the bunch.

3. Parent’s Choice Overnight Diapers Of the 4 brands I’ve tried, Parent’s Choice Overnight offers diapers at the lowest price point and in this case, pretty decent protection. Inevitably, there’s always a chance that the diaper simply can’t hold as much as your little one may need to “let go”…but overall I had pretty good luck using Parent’s Choice Overnight Diapers, and would recommend them.

2. Huggies OverNites – The Huggies brand OverNites could be my second pick for an overnight diaper, but it’s higher price point (compared to generic brands) pushed it to almost a tie with third place. Like I mentioned earlier, extra protection diapers come with an a little extra on the price tag. I’ve had better luck with my boys staying dry using these, but when it comes down to it, I’d rather save a few bucks and choose a cheaper option.

1. Up & Up Overnight DiapersThese are my favorite! These cost slightly more than my #2 selection, but I have had the best success (keeping everything dry) using the Up & Up brand for the overnight hours, and in my opinion they seem to hold the more pee as well, compared to the other 3 mentioned. They are soft, less bulky and have a cute polka dot pattern.

So there you have it, my list…no butts about it! 😉

Snowman Soup

IMG_0716

I wanted to do a special something for my 3-year old’s preschool class, and teach him about giving this season, as well as receiving. I was looking for something themed for the holiday season, not too heavy on the wallet and a “gift” we could make together. So, after scouring the internet, I found “recipes” for Snowman Soup! It’s a really simple idea and all you need are a few simple ingredients.

  • Hot Cocoa packets
  • Candy Canes
  • Marshmallows
  • Chocolate

IMG_0709

Since I found chocolate covered marshmallow snowmen at the store, I used those and I scored at the dollar store with small holiday print baggies.

Screen Shot 2015-12-10 at 10.07.10 AMTo customize it, I found this cute, FREE printable online that we personalized with my son’s name, printed them out on card stock, then stapled to the top of the bags to make “Snowman Soup.”

IMG_0715

We also made this alternate version with chocolate chips and marshmallows. Overall, I love that it was easy for my toddler/preschooler to assemble and I also feel it’s an appropriate “treat” for his peers!
