Sidewalks for Strollers

uas

I’ve had this post on my mind for a while… I never gave it much thought before we moved to our new neighborhood, but seriously, I WISH our new digs had better sidewalks for strollers! Here’s the deal, we moved to Hampton Roads, VA, a historical area of sorts…and we are surrounded by history and homes that have been there since the 1800’s. Yes, just take that in for a second…civil war era! Well, while we are in a building that can’t be more than 10 years old and have a parking garage, central air, electronic entry, etc… you know, all the modern conveniences — when we take our bad boy out for a neighborhood stroll it can be a challenge.

The thing is, since the neighborhood is “dated” many of the sidewalks don’t have the convenient dips/indents/ramps for easy access up and down when you cross the street. In fact the curbs go up pretty high at some points. So when I encounter these not so friendly sidewalks while crossing the street, I have to manually lift the front, then the back of our tandem stroller to get it back up on the sidewalk. Maybe if it wasn’t a double (and any double will have its challenges), it wouldn’t be that big of a deal, but trust me…it can be an issue! I can only imagine how unfriendly our neighborhood streets are for people who use wheelchairs or other wheeled devices.

I truly long for ramps like the one pictured above! This really isn’t something I considered when picking the neighborhood we would move to…or even when we got a stroller,  but you know what…in hindsight, this is something parents should consider when first picking out a stroller, and then if you are moving to a new place! Like, I knew if we moved to a building and we lived on any floor but the first, there had to be an elevator..otherwise how would we be able to “roll out??” I’m not trying to lug a double stroller up and down the stairs…nor 2 toddlers and an armful of groceries.

I honestly would prefer not to have to stop at every intersection and have to bend down and lift the stroller off… and onto the sidewalks… And — since I get asked a lot about how to select a stroller, this post had to be written! Now, depending on how active you are and what kind of sidewalks are in your neighborhood, wheels, tires and handling should all be factored in to other criteria like stroller seat style, sun shade, basket size, handle height, folding/storage ease, etc…. Think about what would be most important to you. I shared my “sidewalk” struggle with another parent in my current neighborhood, who then told me they had to invest in a different stroller since the broken, bumpy & dated sidewalks where we live, basically put their first stroller out of service.

In my case, our Orbit Baby Helix stroller is very durable and the frame, tires and wheels have all held up with the not so smooth, not stroller-friendly sidewalks. We also have a 2-seater wagon the boys got as a gift from their Auntie Alison, so we take that out for spins on the sidewalks too. It’s a bit more bumpy ride, but not as massive to lift up and down when the sidewalks inconveniently don’t have “ramps” for easy up and down access. At the end of the day, you make the best of what you’ve got. It is more of a hassle for Mom or Dad to have to stop take breaks and lift, instead of steady cruising…but good thing the kids are just happy to be outside!

Product Review: Joovy 360 Jogging Stroller

Post written by Daniella M. for 53 weeks

I was given the Joovy 360 jogging stroller as a gift from my brother and sister-in-law when my daughter was born in 2012. This stroller was my salvation! It helped me keep my sanity AND loose that extra baby weight in about 4 months. I have to mention that another contributing factor to the weight loss was that I was able to nurse. Ultimately, she refused the bottle, so what was initially intended as 6 months of nursing turned into a year.  This is a lifetime for a runner, and delayed my ability to go back to trail running, which requires a bit more freedom with time. The Joovy stroller helped me get outside and get moving, even if it was just doing laps around a local park.

First off, this jogger is like the bat mobile! It has incredible suspension and is very easy to maneuver. I have a park near my house, which by zigging and zagging, I was able to create various loops where I could bust out a mile. It was not exciting, but I was extremely grateful and relieved to have been able to get a run in even if it ended up being 2 or so miles with lots and LOTS of breaks.  Another great feature is the huge canopy with a window on the roof which helps both entertain your baby and lets you keep on eye on them during your run. Depending on the position of the sun, I would recline her all the way back and she would be able to look up at the trees or at me peeking down at her. Also, the storage compartment at the bottom is large which is very useful if you want to go on a run, but know that you may have to stop and feed the baby or change a diaper. I was able to fit an all weather picnic blanket in the basket, and plop down to feed her whenever I needed. If you live in a city like Los Angeles (like me), where every commute is a minimum of 20 minutes, then time out of the house quickly adds up, so the more you are able to bring with you to make you and the baby comfortable, the better. This also came in handy when I would go for a run and then drop by the farmers market to pick up some fresh produce. Another great feature is that it has little mesh pockets on either side where I could drop my phone into and play white noise whenever she needed a little extra help sleeping. The stroller also came with a covering that you can use when the weather isn’t all that great but you need to get outside. It protects the baby on windy days (especially if you use it down by the beach) or from light rain. I do, however, recommend airing it out to get rid of the plastic smell. Lastly, it has a great compartment near the handle bar where I could fit my keys, sunblock, water, etc., so everything was handy during my runs.

I would say  the only drawback is that it is huge which ultimately is fine since it offers that extra storage. It doesn’t stand on its own either, so storing it at home is a pain, and it can be cumbersome to fit in the back of your vehicle. However, once you are at your spot, then it is a first class ride for you and your child!

I would recommend this stroller to any new mom especially with it’s great price point. Although the BOB Strollers have come down a bit, this one is a great option and I was very happy with it.

Orbit Baby: The Good & The Not So Good

I am the proud owner of a G2 Orbit Baby Travel System. When I first started stroller shopping I was really overwhelmed and never imagined I’d “invest” that kind of money in a travel system, but after doing some research, figuring out what was important to me and what made sense…I ended up with the Orbit Baby G2. One of my friend’s who I had consulted for advice on how to choose a stroller said to me, “It’s your baby’s wheels,” and so why not give my child the “Lamborghini” of strollers! Some of the factors that went into my decision to go with this system were ease of use, weight, safety, durability and logistics. I needed something adjustable for a tall Daddy, and a couple Dad’s I know said they loved it because of where the seat sits and how the handles extend, plus there’s no bar at the bottom for big feet to kick when at the helm of the stroller. The 360 base is also super impressive and the fact that it’s engineered so well, a product of a Bay Area, CA company (my home) and its “green” factor pretty much solidified the decision.

A slew of celebs also rock the Orbit Baby stroller, everyone from Jay-Z and Beyonce to Kristen Cavallari…

… Brian Austin Green & Megan Fox, and how could I leave out KimYe’s baby North West!?!? Mind you, while it is “cool” to know celebs share their taste for strollers with me, celebrity was NOT a factor in my decision!

So, I really loved my stroller as a single, I got the bassinet too, but my baby outgrew that fast. I loved it’s lightweight, smart design, easy to fold and load into the car and my Skip Hop baby bag clipped onto it really easily! The only not so good thing about it was the storage bag underneath. You can’t have anything in the bag if you fold it up, AND while it slides out and can be a shoulder baby bag, you can’t just dump things in there when you’re strolling around. Additionally, there isn’t much storage room, say if you’re at the grocery store and don’t want to carry a separate basket for a few items…you’d need the panniers (which I have too) that attach to the sides and can easily fold down when not in use. And with the panniers, it can also be tricky to fold the base unit if you leave the attached, but overall, those are minor details and the handling, rotating base and paparazzi shade made me a fan. I’ve traveled cross country many a time by myself and I would push the stroller with one hand, while rolling my luggage in the other. Using the infant seat in a rental car was also super easy to strap in without the car seat base.

Well then I found out baby numero dos was on the way…so I pondered for a half second if I needed a new system, only to find out Orbit Baby now had a Double Helix to accommodate 2 bambinos and if you had a single, there was an upgrade kit, so once again, decision made! Here’s the good…it was extremely easy to install the upgrade kit. Orbit has some amazingly easy to follow “how to” videos and the pieces fit perfectly, just excellent engineering. I thought the new handles with a tablet pocket looked cool and it’s very easy to go from single to double and vice versa with the added based that you can switch in and out in seconds. The new storage basket, while no longer removable, was much bigger and easier to put things in and take out. Note, I’m hesitant to use the tablet pocket with the iPad because as my other half pointed out, by putting it on display could be an open invitation for theft…which is sad, but true!

Soon enough it was time to put my upgraded Orbit to use…and while it works great as a double, there are some things that were not so good. First, I couldn’t easily attach my diaper bag, then a “Mommy Hook” I got couldn’t be easily attached either! After a few uses, I started referring to it as my big rig…this thing gets so much attention and while we probably look pretty chic rolling around in it, I feel like we need the back up alarm noise to let people know we are coming through. The handling that I loved and ease of use have been compromised with the additional base, as the rotating wheels on the back tend to “get caught” and start dragging because they catch when making sharp turns. I did complain to customer service and I got a new set of wheels for the back attachment and it has been a lot better, but still has issues here and there. Then, getting to the storage basket underneath can be challenging when you have a stroller seat on the main base facing forward because the foot rest blocks it. Now I love that the seats swivel and can be configured in several different positions, but since I can’t attach my diaper bag, I have to shove it in the storage compartment and when I go to grab something quickly…it’s not too easy!

Screen shot 2013-11-17 at 9.33.17 PM

Orbit’s customer service is definitely on point, as any issue that has ever come up has been handled quickly and to my satisfaction. They actually have you send in a video or photo to show/demo what is wrong, and that’s usually easier than trying to explain it. Other pluses are the easy to clean fabric and huge sunshades on any of the seat/carriers, the wheels are durable – for big babies like mine, and with the double, an added drink holder with a compartment for a smart phone and the nesting system for storage is great.

If I had to choose again, I probably would do everything the same, but I might shop around a little more for the double. I casually looked at another double stroller, but the Orbit just impresses so much I didn’t consider some of the minor annoyances I just mentioned, and there is no way to KNOW until you start using it. At any rate, I think they’re coming out with the G3 in 2014, hopefully they’ve addressed some of the things I think could be improved upon for the Double Helix version.
