Virtual Birthday Party

This year we had to adjust the birthday party to fit the times aka Coronavirus social distancing and living life on Zoom! My older son turned 8, and since his favorite pastime during the stay at home orders has been playing Roblox with his friends online, it made perfect sense to center the celebration on his favorite game.

I actually did an interview for work with Roblox and so I got some tips about hosting a virtual shin dig on their platform, things like signing up for a private VIP server and carry out that theme for the online party.

If you’re a parent to an elementary aged or middle school aged child, chances are you know all about Roblox. For those of you who are unfamiliar, the best way for me to explain it is that it’s the YouTube of online games. Just like how YouTube is a world filled with millions of user-generated videos, Roblox is filled with countless user generated games, and in my son’s case, his favorite is called Jailbreak.

Once the theme was in place, I created an invite to let all our friends know to save the date. Then, I doubled checked on securing the private VIP server, so that for the “party,” he would be able to play with just his friends. The other thing the kids love to do is also be on some type of video chat while they play the game so they can keep talking and find each other and strategize, while they play. So, I decided to use Google Meet (no time limit), as the link where we would gather to say hello and have cake. Then, I sent out his username for Roblox, asked the guests who would participate for their usernames and also sent the link to the private server!

One thing I wish I would’ve thought more out prior to the virtual party, was some group activities we could’ve done before he blew out his candles. We have now attended a few other birthdays online and the kids love some organized activities like scavenger hunts, trivia and games like pictionary or bingo! Also, if all your guests live nearby, you could put together goodie bags and distribute with “materials” for the virtual call – like balloons + decor, game pieces and cupcakes, etc… so everyone has what they need ready to go. One family dropped off a personal pizza for my son to enjoy for a virtual party! However, I do believe I scored by collecting short video greetings from our family and friends to edit together and show during the call.

All in all, it turned out great. Do be sure to decorate at home, it adds to the atmosphere and makes it more festive. I grabbed so items from the dollar store and it made for a great birthday backdrop. When it came to party time, he was all smiles and it was very heartwarming to see the greta turnout. It was super chaotic with all those kids on the virtual call, but it was all love, and I think it bothers me as an adult more than it does the kids…they are so unbothered! Hopefully next year we can get back to “normal” gatherings.

Dub Nation Birthday Celebration

This year my boys turned 5 and 6…and for the past year they have been ALL about basketball, specifically our hometown Golden State Warriors who just happened to prevail as back to back champions in June. So, their birthday party these was a no brainer…a Dub Nation Birthday Celebration! My boys have been spoiled when it comes to (NBA) basketball. Not only did both of their births coincide with NBA Championships (in Miami), but in both of their lifetime’s, they have only known living in places with NBA Champions! We are clearly a basketball family, so this year I got the wheels turning to play up a blue and gold theme fit for my basketball kings! I made a custom “ticket” invitation via Paperless Post to announce the event, you can see those details here.

I created a dessert table using a backdrop of alternating blue and gold streamers, and I stuck a warriors sign from Party City in the middle. I covered the table with a coordinating yellow table cover and added Warriors logo plates and napkins. We already had a couple Warriors basketballs, so I propped them up on clear glass cylinders stuffed with matching tissue paper. I got the Warriors themed sheet cake from Safeway and ordered blue and yellow frosted cupcakes. I topped the cupcakes with their age (5 & 6) numbers, along with team logos, that I sized and printed out myself, then glued onto toothpicks.  I found mini blue popcorn boxes which I filled with Boom Chicka Pop Kettle Corn, and filled the small candy jars with basketball wrapped butter mints.

The other desserts I added were rice krispy treats and chocolate dipped marshmallows, both made by me and both decorated with blue and yellow cake sprinkles. I also had a tray of (Costco) chocolate chip cookies, because cookies make everyone smile!

Over the years we’ve collected and saved various Warriors signs, so I thought, why no string them up and use them for decorations. That was really easy since we had several signs. I just punched holes in the corners and used twine to string them up.

Since it was an outdoor party at the park, I just made a couple centerpieces (you never know how the wind will factor in). I took a couple metal pails and filled with rocks for weight – found these at Dollar Tree. I then placed (free) foam fingers and clap sticks we’ve gotten from games, added tissue paper and stuck a “5” and “6” balloon to finish the look.

We played with water balloons….

Destroyed a basketball pinata, which I personalized with a Warriors logo print out…

You know it was a GREAT party when there was lots of laughter and smiles all around!

I also found the perfect thank you gift to give our guests, a Dubble Bubble “Slam Dunk” dispenser and I custom created a thank you tag to stick on them.

Thanks to all our friends and family who celebrated our boys with us and made it a very memorable occasion!

Spiderman Birthday Party

spider

Two parties in six days, that was my life this past week. We started with TMNT for my 5-year old, and finished the birthday week with SPIDERMAN for my now 4-year old.

spider8 spider2

We chose to have this party at a complex near us, called Bladium. The nice thing about Bladium is that you can choose what activities the kids can do during your party. We chose Rock Climbing as our main activity the first hour, then for the second hour they moved us into another area where the kid’s had use of the basketball court and a giant inflatable slide!

spider9

At this venue, all the parties are done in 2 hour blocks and they include pizza and drinks for the kids. I liked that they allowed us to bring additional food (aside from pizza) to serve to our guests. They assign you a party host who stays with you and watches all the kids during your event.

spider7

When it came to the cake, I got ours at Safeway and elected for the cupcake cake! We had both white and chocolate cake and what I like about these cakes is that you don’t need a knife, just pull it apart!

spider4

I didn’t go all out on decor for this party, I had a themed tablecloth, plates and napkins…but I did make the “happy birthday” banner that I found at this website.

spider6

What I did do though is get a pinata, which was hung from the basketball hoop and it was a big hit with all the kids!

spider1

We also sent pour guests home with their own “Spidey Web.” I picked up Goofy String from Dollar Tree and transformed the cans with this printable. It was super easy and a big it with the kids..I just had to politely ask them to wait until they got home to start spraying!

spider3

So, now I’m birthday party planned out…until next year, I’ll have two very happy super heroes!

TMNT Birthday Party

TMNT3

Cowabunga dude! The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are BIG in my house…and TMNT was the chosen theme for my older son who just turned 5! When it came to choosing a venue for the party, I chose the East Oakland Sports Center. They have an amazing indoor aquatic area and a roomy party room just off the pool. Since his birthday is in the summer, I figured a swim party would be the perfect way to celebrate…and it truly was a big hit!

TMNT8

We picked the perfect day to host the party, and while there was a public swim session, it wasn’t too packed and very comfortable for our guests. The pool and swim areas were very same and since the majority of our swimmers being about 5 years old, the depth at their height was perfect. Also, they have a great staff that’s very accommodating and lifeguards who kept a watchful eye on all the kids on the pool deck.

TMNT1

When it came to decor, I used a lot of these well-designed party printables, like the welcome sign, cupcake toppers, favor tags and pizza banner!

TMNT7

I created a long table for the kids to sit at and covered them with plastic green table cloths and a store bought ninja turtle table decor set, and I used the ninja turtle face plates, party blowouts and coordinating napkins to liven up the decor!

TMNT5

As far as food for the party, I kept it simple with pizza – of course ninja turtles and kids (grownups too), love a cheesy pie. I did an easy fruit salad, veggie platter, chips, crackers and some chicken and swiss cheese rollers to complete the spread. It was just the right amount for that post swim hunger.

TMNT6

I also purchased a TMNT themed “scene setter” to serve as a backdrop for photos..kids love the life size characters, and it helps brighten up empty wall space.

TMNT2

I ordered the cake at Food Maxx, where they printed out an edible ninja turtle print.

TMNT4

One of my favorite elements for the party were our favors! I found these foam “nun chucks” at Dollar Tree, added a thank you label, and it was the perfect compliment to our party theme.

TMNT9

Needless to say, we all had an awesome time… Thanks to all our friends who joined in the fun and celebrated with us!

Party Time!! Assemble the Minions…

minion invite 2015webLast month my boys turned 2 and 3 respectively, and we threw a birthday bash for them at the park with an all MINIONS theme! It was pretty perfect timing since the new Minions movie had just made its debut and my boys of course love the little yellow critters. I found a great FREE template online to create the party invitation and asked my graphic designer sister to tweak it for the personalization and set out to do the rest of the party planning.

The one thing that was nice about picking a theme that coincided with not only popular characters, but also a new theatrical release is that finding party supplies and favors that were inline with it, were pretty easy to find! Not to mention stuffing yellow paper bags with minion themed party favors too – goggles, bubbles, straws and snacks!

bounce house air walker

We had the Minion bounce house. Actually, this was a standard basketball and slide combo bounce house I rented from Bay Area Jump, and they added a Minions panel to match our party theme! We also got one of those giant air walker balloons…it was certainly a hit when the kids saw this giant Minion coming their direction…just kind of a challenge to keep it grounded since we were outdoors. We purchased that at Party City and they fill it up for free with helium.

table

My sister’s friend created these beyond cute minion cupcakes and I found lots of minion-themed snacks to help accessorize the dessert table, including minion graham crackers, cheese nips and fruit snacks. I also got lots of “cookie robots” …if you watched Despicable Me, then you know what I’m referring to.

bubbles

Bubbles were a big hit at the party. Thinking of toddler appropriate toys, activities and games can be a challenge, so I decided to create a bubble station where we had a bubble machine going, along with an assortment of bubble wands and a bubble solution dispenser, for the kids to play around with…they LOVED it!

Screen shot 2015-08-14 at 4.29.14 PM

I lucked out and came up on this life size – well, my boys size…purple “bad minion” pinata! It held lots of candy (my sister stuffed it with ring pops, skittles and dum dums), and was a hit…literally! LOL! I sort of feel funny when we are encouraging them to beat this paper mache character with a stick…but it’s all in fun and having a pinata at birthdays was an annual thing for me growing up, so happy to do the same with mine.

purple pinata

**Note – It’s always nice to have a bigger kid around to break the pinata cuz with the little tots, it could take a loooong time!!!

shirts

And — last but not least, we all sported Minion tee’s as a family. It was a great celebration and we loved having our friends and family join in the minion fun!

Party Time! Who to Invite to a “Kiddie” Birthday…

good-kids-party-themes

I’ve been planning a joint birthday party for my boys and then I started thinking about who do I invite, etc… This time around we’ve opted to have it at the park, so we have a little more room to invite more people. But then the questions becomes who do you invite? Of course my immediate family and good friends, some cousins, etc… This celebration will also be a homecoming of sorts because we are moving to my “hometown” Bay Area and this will be the first birthday my boys celebrate it there.

So I turned to my circle of social media friends to get a handle on how they decide who to invite to their “kiddie” parties…

Parents – When you have a party for your child who do you invite (besides the given family, close/good friends)? Only friends/acquaintances with kids, couples without kids and/or single friends?

Single/Childless friends – Do you want to be invited to “kiddie” parties?

I think when it comes to single and childless friends it can get “sensitive” for some who may have struggles with having children, or those that are single may just feel like they don’t fit in, so being around events where there are kids can be tough…I get it! Personally, I want to invite everyone to everything, but I get it if a friend with no kids isn’t trying to attend, no biggie, my feelings are NOT hurt! At the same time, there’s usually a budget or capacity to adhere to and it’s just not practical to extend the invitation to everyone.

Here are some of the responses:

Courtney saysHaving done this and being very happy my birthday party days are over…. If I had to do it all over again, I’d do the following. Family only ages 1-5. When they reach school age, parties at age 10, 16 and 18/graduation. Mainly cause they know who their friends are and they can pick and choose who they want to come, instead of feeling obligated to invite a class of kids. IMO and having spent lots of money on parties, the kids don’t remember they were celebrated! It’s basically a party for adults.

Lisa When they are little, I invite everyone – I look at it as a time to see all of my friends, hang out and celebrate. However, as the kids get older they will tell you who they want at their party. For my daughter’s 13’s birthday I told her she could invite 13 of her girlfriends along with her Grandmothers, and Godmother’s and we treated them to Benihana’s and that was one of the best parties ever (and price friendly) worked out great. (Disclaimer: I do not and never will feel obligated to invite the ENTIRE class)

Frank – For us, it really depends on the venue. If it’s at your house, a park, clubhouse, etc., the wider the scope of people you can invite. If it’s at a kids gym, jumpy park, Chuck E Cheese, I’d only invite the age appropriate kids and their parents. Don’t feel guilty for not inviting everyone, if they’re your friends/fam, they’ll understand!

ChristinaThis changes as the kids get older. With our firstborn, we invited everyone regardless if they had kids or not, until he was about 4 years old. His first birthday, I think we had 100 people! (Granted, we were one of the first in our group of friends to have kids so most were kid-less). Once he started Kindergarten, we had multiple parties to make it more manageable. One for family, one for friends, & one with his classmates. Starting about 1st grade through 6th grade, school parents start doing “boys/girls only” parties if they choose to have a party, many kids don’t. About that time, we started letting the kids choose who they wanted to invite but limit it to a certain number. Now that he’s 13, the parties have gotten smaller but co-ed again. We’ll still do a family dinner and we’ll do something with his friends- typically we’ll limit it to however many we can fit into our cars and plan for it to be after school on a Friday. This year it was bowling, dinner, & the school musical. Don’t feel obligated to invite everyone. Some people might get offended, but they’ll get over it. Most people understand that you just can’t accommodate everyone. I got over trying to please everyone after kid #3 . Good luck! Oh! A new trend is combo parties, for Gaby’s 1st grade class, 4 girls did a joint party and did a book exchange in lieu of gifts.

Stephanie – Up to age four, we invited family and close friends (with and without kids, with the caveat that they were not obligated to come at all). After four, we had “their party” – basically invited the number of friends equal to the years they were old; and we had “our party” – a family get together, not with all the decorations and over-the-top stuff but with cake. Party means presents. Kids want presents!

Nicole – It can be touchy but when the kids are too young to have friends I invite my own. When they’re old enough to have friends I only invite their own.

So there you have it a variety of perspectives from parents who’ve been there done that and who are there, doing that! I see that one notion everyone seems to agree on is that you can’t please (or invite) everybody and it also depends on your child, your family and your budget! Happy party planning.

Mustache Themed Baby Shower

IMG_2260

One of my baby sister’s BFF’s is having a baby – this actually makes me feel really old, because I’ve known her friends since they were like 5 years old!!! Anyway, in honor of his upcoming arrival, they celebrated with a Mustache themed baby shower! Lots of fun stuff from the decor to the dessert, games, favors and their own unique spin on playing up the “mustache!” The Mom-to-Be, Gaile, was actually sweet enough to give me great descriptions for the photos I’m featuring in this post…as she heads into the home stretch of pregnancy on bed rest…so, enjoy!

IMG_2265

The welcome table. I loved the idea of having a wall of balloons behind the welcome table to separate the space. We used blue, teal, orange colored circles for our guests to “sign in” on, that will be used as balloons for the frame on the left hand side. That way, when our baby boy grows up, he can read the messages, and know who attended his baby shower. We also placed a variety of photos from our baby bump photo session in San Diego. And — we solicited name suggestions and advice with a sign that said, “Edwin & Gaile mustache you a question, advice really and good name suggestions.”

IMG_2267

Table seating. Centerpieces/decorations were the mustache props, a mini-diaper cake, and neckties. Mustache props: I purchased a stencil on Oriental Trading and cut out the mustaches and glued them onto sticks. The mustache bag they were placed in had a note that said “Photo Fun! Wear one!” These mustache props were not only at the eating tables but throughout the venue. Everyone loves taking pictures and the props make for great photo opportunities! As for the mini-diaper cakes, they were a simple set of 7 rolled up diapers, bundled up with a ribbon wrapped around them, and a mustache tag decoration sticking out of the center. The necktie centerpieces were inspired by Pinterest and also cut from a stencil, glued onto sticks, and stuck into floral arrangement Styrofoam, topped with shredded paper and wrapped with paper bag wrapping! The persimmon color table runners were actually used at my wedding so that was a bonus to reuse! 🙂

IMG_2262

The dessert table! The decorative cake design idea was found on Pinterest. The actual cake maker was my Sister-in-Law’s coworker, and it was delicious and moist. She also made the full size cupcakes. I made the mini cupcakes and added a mini cupcake sleeves for decorations. I also made a mango trifle that was a hit! We used mustache food tags to label all the delicious desserts.

IMG_2266

Gametime! We had several games on tap for our guests to play… “Guess when Little Man will be born Calendar,” we placed a heart on the due date, 05/13/14, and guests used stamps to stamp their guess with their name. “Guess how many M and M’s in the Jar,” using two Jars of peanut M and M’s. A “Bib and Onesie” drawing contest…surprisingly this game was very popular! Everybody used up each bib and onesie and came up with some really good designs. We did “Don’t Say ___ Game” with clothespins…. We did the “how big is the belly game” with a ribbon, my aunt was dead on! It was incredible!. Then we had a lullaby written game we began, but it was way too difficult to start and stop people. So, after handing out the paper, we collected them ten minutes later and tried to pick out a winner. Other games we did have but weren’t able to play were two more written games: word scramble and word jumble.

IMG_2261

Pin the Mustache on the baby. Unfortunately this game wasn’t actually played at the baby shower. There were so many activities and a ton of people, that it was difficult to gather people to play. I would have enjoyed people playing this. My brother got creative and actually used a baby photo of Edwin, drew it, and used my skin color! Then, I cut out mustaches to stick onto the poster. I thought it was the cutest idea, and I actually kept it because I like it so much.

IMG_2258

Party Favors! We decided to give out favors of pint glasses with vinyl mustache decals. I searched online and it was going to be a pretty pricey guest gift, but luckily I came across a great deal at the dollar store for mustache glasses! However, a couple days later I ended up receiving an email stating the dollar store cancelled my order because they didn’t have enough in stock. Poop! I didn’t know what other favor I wanted, so as I then started searching DIY glasses and found vinyl mustache decals that stick to glasses, and discovered webstaurantstore.com that sold pint glasses for relatively cheap, I ended up purchasing both and making the favors myself. It worked out beautifully because the Dollar Store mustache glasses actually had a different look… so I was completely satisfied with the purchase. It came out to almost the same price as the dollar store, minus the effort of having to make them. The tabled was labeled with a sign stating, “You’re Fanstachtic, Thanks for Combing By.”

Looking back at the baby shower, I had so much fun. Time went by so quickly, and the set up and break down of the decorations was an event in itself, but well worth it.  Thanks to our great support in our family and friends we definitely could not have had such a perfect baby shower celebration.

Little Hula Girl Birthday Party

A post written for 53 Weeks by Charlyn D.

On October 9, 2013, my daughter, Kaileya, turned 1 year old and for her 1st Birthday Party, I planned to have a luau/Hawaiian theme, since I always envision her to be a little hula girl when she grows up!

char1
This picture was on her actual birthday. After blowing out her guava cake from Aki’s Bakery in San Jose, I had her sit in her highchair which I decorated it with a grass skirt with silk flowers attached to it.

char2
Since my husband is a graphic designer, I had him make a Hawaiian-themed invitation and thank you cards. I found the wording online, “Hula on over and join the fun, our baby girl is turning one!”
char3
“Whipped Up Just for You,” in San Jose, made Kaileya’s cake. I sent over a few pictures from Pinterest of hula cakes to her, and she was able to make one specifically for Kaileya. It was the most delicious banana cake ever!!! She was able to incorporate the hula girl from the invitation too!

char4char5

The cupcakes were made by my sister in-law, Myra, and my friend, Anella. These cupcakes were strawberry, chocolate & red velvet flavors. They were decorated with hula girls and plumeria flowers on top.

char6
One of the “big” centerpieces at the party was a roasted pig (lechon), which is both a Filipino and Hawaiian tradition for 1st Birthday Parties…I even put my own touch adding a Hawaiian flower to its ear!

char8 char7

When it came to decorations, I had balloons in pink and purple. I also used banana leaves on tables with hibiscus silk flowers. The favors I gave out were plastic coconut-shaped containers with a hibiscus flower on top with some goodies inside, and during the party I provided plastic leis and plumeria hair pins to our guests, so they could get into the theme too.
char9

The party was exactly how I wanted it to be, and I’m so happy she had a great time at her 1st Birthday Party!!!
