Spring Break – Waikiki

Spring Break 2022 led us into paradise to the famed sands of Waikiki. It had been quite a few years since I had walked along that stretch of Honolulu, and the first time for both of my boys to visit Oahu. Needless to say, I fell in love with Waikiki all over again, just as I had the first time I visited many, many years ago and my kids were thoroughly impressed.

When planning this trip, I already had a good idea I wanted to stay at the Hilton Hawaiian Village (HHW). I knew it would be just me and the boys, since their Dad wasn’t joining us due to work obligations. Some of the main factors that made it easy for me to make this decision are the location and amenities available at this property. As far as location, it’s super convenient and easy to get in and out of the resort area by foot or by car.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is Screen-Shot-2022-04-22-at-12.56.06-PM-1024x705.png

HHW sits ‘at the end’ of Waikiki, so you’re far enough away from the traffic along Kalakaua, but still close enough to walk to it. On the other side of the resort, it’s less than a mile (and an easy walk) to swanky Ala Moana Mall. And, for this getaway I didn’t want to rent a car and drive, or worry about parking, plus knowing it was still close to many shops, restaurants and points of interest, made it an easy decision.

As far as amenities, it is a resort village in every sense of the term. There are numerous places to eat, grab snacks, dine in or take out, to satisfy every appetite. I will admit, I am a fan of hotels/resorts with Starbucks on property, and at HHW, there are 2. That being said, the lines are LONG in the morning and the prices are about double what you would expect on the mainland, but for my family’s taste, it’s worth the wait. Another big draw for us is the numerous pool areas – one with water slides (Paradise Pool), a lagoon perfect for ‘controlled’ recreation and the resort also sits right on the beach. Plus, since we had all three options right there, we could easily spend time at each everyday, to satisfy all requests! We didn’t even get to spend time at all the pools on property. Aside from what I just mentioned, the resort offers free and fee activities on property as well, like morning Yoga, Hula Lessons, Aerobics, etc… There are also several shops including ABC Stores and Louis Vuitton, to pick up both high and low end souvenirs too.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is Screen-Shot-2022-04-22-at-12.55.54-PM-765x1024.png

Now as far as our favorites at the HHW, my kids absolutely loved the lagoon. It’s salt-water and very calm, so perfect for all ages. We rented paddle boards, and my boys (along with the rest of the kids) were all about swimming and hunting down the small fish, also in the lagoon. They literally spent hours doing this and playing in the sand.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is Screen-Shot-2022-04-22-at-12.56.18-PM-766x1024.png

The lagoon isn’t very shady, but they do have umbrellas and chairs you can rent, which may be a good idea because finding (free) chairs in the pool areas can be tough when it gets crowded, plus the lagoon is situated very close to the Paradise Pool, so it’s easy to go between both, plus Dairy Queen and the “adult” beverage area “bar” are short, quick walks too.

One of the things I wished I had discovered sooner is the garlic shrimp at “Blue Water Shrimp & Seafood,” located in the HHW bazaar area. The shrimp was out of this world good, and I thought the potato salad and steamed rice (yes, I was impressed by the rice) were amazing too! There are places to sit, but it’s more of a counter service restaurant, so I lucked out by calling in my order and easily picking it up in 15 minutes rather than waiting in a long line.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is Screen-Shot-2022-04-22-at-12.55.22-PM-764x1024.png

The Tapa Grill next to the Tapa Pool is also another fun spot. This pool stays open into the evening hours and offers more shade from the sun, so this would be our wind down spot after the pool/beach/lagoon, when the boys weren’t ready to call it a night. The Tapa Grill offers smashed burgers, pizza, fries, etc…. and it was easy enough to order and bring the grub poolside. The Tapa Grill also has live music in the evenings, which makes it a very cool hang out and lounge spot.

Outside of the HHW, we didn’t venture out too far. We did walk along Kalakaua and check out the main “strip.” We checked out the new Kuhio Food Hall at the now (high-end) International Market Place, a “slice” of pizza at Aloha Pizzeria was literally 1/4 of a pizza, very cheesy and very yummy. We had some satisfying shave ice from Island Vintage Shave Ice, a shave ice kiosk with fresh fruit. Our first night we were treated to dinenr at Rainbow Drive-In by a friend how lives on the island, they’re known for their plate lunches. Then, for ramen we ventured to Ramen Nakamura, which is a small restaurant where everyone eats at thecounter, my kids gave it two thumbs up! If you head to the mall, the food court at Ala Moana Mall was another favorite, with food and dessert for every taste! One of us had Chinese food, another went for fried chicken, I did Korean BBQ and then for dessert one of my boys opted for rainbow shave ice, while the other had soft serve topped with a nutella-filled taiyaki from Somi Somi.

The one tourist ‘excursion” we did take on was a hike to the top of Diamond Head. This attraction is very close to Waikiki and costs $5 per hiker. We took a ride share to the mountain and did the hike up and back with some friends, then treated ourselves to pineapple whip and shave ice from the food trucks parked at the bottom. It was hot, it was sweaty…but the views were completely worth it.

We followed the hike up by playing in the waves behind the Royal Hawaiian Hotel using boogie board we inherited from a family who left and didn’t want to take the boards with them! The aren’t many waves along the beach at HHW, so it was nice to have a little more “action” for the kids who couldn’t get enough of the ocean. Also, where we sat, near the pink and white umbrellas, was a short walk to the beach entrance to Duke’s, so easy to order food and bring it to the beach.

Many friends and family have asked me for tips for traveling to Oahu and staying at HHW, so here’s what I got:
-We booked a travel package through Costco – Air, Hotel and Transfers. Price was pretty good and included $100 credit on our hotel room for the stay. The shuttle to hotel from HNL was convenient, although you need to pack some patience because they may shuttle a larger group with you, everyone else who booked using Costco, so it’s not an immediate ride once you land. However, the Costco bookings do include a lei greeting.
– If you are a Hilton Honors member, they have separate lines at check in, which may move you through the process faster, although it still needs some work. Also, Silver level (and higher) members are also entitled to complimentary bottles of water at HHW through the concierge desk.
– Wristbands are required to use pools and amenities at HHW. However, these aren’t the kind that you need to wear the entire duration of your stay. You can request more and replace the paper ones given at check-in. My tip is to ask the mail desk clerk around the corner for check-in to avoid waiting in another line.
– Pool towels are provided at HHW, but lines can be very long in the morning and you must have a towel card when you are getting fresh towels or changing them out, so if possible, grab fresh towels the night before and that way you already have fresh ones ready to go in the morning.
– For water play, you may want to have floats, sand toys, boogie boards, etc… These are all available for purchase at ABC Store, Target, etc.. but we lucked out by being gifted some from people who were headed home from vacation.
– The rooms are clean, maybe a little outdated in the older towers, but for my family it was fine. There’s an in-room fridge and our beds were comfy enough. The Hilton wifi works well and they even had playstation’s in room for the kids, although we never even turned on the TV!
– – And finally for more food ideas and spots to try on Oahu, follow my friend @mamarazzieats ..she’s there like 4x a year and finds all the good grub!

All in all, it’s been a Spring Break trip to remember, and we definitely can’t wait to go back!

Vacation in Cabo with Kids

#LosCabos – We just landed in Mexico

This year my kids were given an entire week off from school in February, and in anticipation of the time off, I booked a timeshare in San Jose del Cabo. It was the first time we were traveling out of the country as a family of 4, and exciting to get our passports stamped together. The last time (and only) I had visited Cabo prior to this trip was for a friend’s wedding many year ago, I was single then and my idea of a Mexican vacation was a little different! So, with 2 kids in tow I was hoping for family fun. Overall, it was a great vacation, we spent most of the time hanging out by the pool at our resort (Coral Baja) and really just relaxed!

My poolside view at Worldmark Coral Baja looking at our timeshare unit while the kids play in the pool.

At any rate, I wanted to share some tips and ideas of how to prepare and what to do when you go on vacation with the kids in Cabo!

Deplaning right onto the tarmac
  • Passport – Every person traveling outside of the U.S. needs their own (valid) passport. It doesn’t matter if you are 0 or 100, each person needs a passport…and I believe it also needs to be valid for at least 6 months past your travel date. If you do not have passports yet, you need to apply for them as soon as you start planning your vacation! And — for the children’s passport, both parents and/or guardians, and the child need to be present when turning in the application. Give yourself at least a month to get it done.
  • Transportation – I knew we weren’t going to do much exploring on our own, so renting a car was not part of our trip. I highly recommend you set up private/shuttle transport from the airport to your hotel/lodging. Do this at least 2 weeks ahead of your arrival. Fortunately, our resort works directly with the TransLife Cabo shuttle service, so once we landed we walked past all the sales people inside the airport, to the shuttle area outside and we’re taken directly to our accommodations. The Los Cabos airport to our Worldmark unit was pretty quick, less than 20 minutes!
Refreshing kiddie cocktails form the swim up bar.
  • Snacks – I debated about using a local Cabo grocery delivery service or to pack some of our own food and snacks from home for this trip. When you have 2 kids, especially my boys…they always want to snack! I opted to just pack some of my own stuff (crackers, chips, popcorn, cookies, etc… ), and had no trouble at all getting through customs. We also shopped for additional items at markets new our resort. There are plenty of places, including a Costco and Wal-Mart in Cabo, if you prefer to shop once you land. Actually, I would’ve used a grocery delivery service if our stay had been a little longer, just be sure to plan ahead! Other than that we ate at the on-site restaurant, except for one or two meals.
Raef meets Baby Henry the dolphin
  • Excursions – I’ll admit it, we sat through a timeshare presentation to take advantage of the vouchers they offered to do an activity. We were originally supposed to go on a snorkel boat, but due to the high winds it got canceled and we instead opted for a Dolphin Encounter, which ended up being AMAZING! There are a few places to do an encounter in Los Cabos, and we went to Dolphin Discovery. It was probably one of the best things my kids have ever done. You’re able to get in the water with the dolphins in the actual sea, not a pool. And, lucky for us on this activity you also got up close and personal with a Camel and Sea Lion!
Up close smooches with a Sea Lion
Shells we found on the beach
  • Beach – Our resort sat right on the beach, lots of sand and rough surf (not safe for swimming), but that also makes for plenty of sea shells. Taking the kids out for a stroll on the sand and giving them the task of looking for shells is a great way to keep them busy.
Catching some air on the way into the pool
  • Pool – The majority of our trip was spent pool side, which was totally fine by me. As always, I pack a few pool toys like these dive rings, plus their goggles, and my boys will swim all day! We also took advantage of the poolside amenities, like ceramics, bingo, volleyball and ping pong.
Friendly game of ping pong

BTW… I never exchanged any of my dollars for pesos. We were able to open a “tab” at the timeshare, so they just charged my credit card at the end. The few occasions where I did need cash, dollars were fine.

Raef painted a ceramic sugar skull by the pool…

All in all it turned out to be the perfect February getaway. The kids have already expressed a desire to go back..they are also concerned that they will miss the dolphin, Henry, that they got to know so well. If you’re thinking about a Mexican vacay with kids, do it…it is so much fun!

8 Fun Family Activities in Maui

I think Maui is a great vacation destination anytime of year, whether you’re looking to travel as a couple, with friends, family or even solo! This summer, I was so excited to take my kids for the very first time, along with their Dad who had never been…plus my sisters and Mom joined us too. For me, it was my third trip to the island, and while I had already been able to explore much of the island, there was so much more I hadn’t done, and it was my first trip with my family.

When I was doing research for this trip, a couple of my main priorities for selecting activities and things to do, were age appropriateness and cost! So, now that we’re home and I’ve had some time to reflect on our fun times on the Valley Isle, I’m sharing my “8 Fun Family Activities in Maui.”

Ali’i Kula Lavender Farm – Take a drive upcountry to Kula where the temperatures are cooler and you can experience the beauty and agriculture of the island. This is an easy drive and you can spend as little or as much time as you want here (I’d say give it 2 hours). The farm’s slopes are filled with different varieties of lavender and there’s also plenty of other tropical plants decorating its landscape.

My boys had a great time embarking on the farm’s scavenger hunt, and because of it we got to explore pretty much every corner of the farm and take in all the gorgeous views. Plus, they gave us a special prize when we completed the hunt. The costs to enter Ali’i Lavender Farm is minimal and they offer a military discount too!

Strawberry Picking – If you make the drive to Kula, another fun stop is Kula Country Farms where you (and the kids) can pick your own strawberries. They also have a cute farm stand and offer island refreshments that make it worth the stop. Just pay for what you pick!

Hike to Twin Falls – One of the most popular excursions in Maui is the “Road to Hana.” I have done this drive before, and while it is beautiful and filled with awe-inspiring scenery, the thought of being in the car for 3-hours along a windy road with wiggly kids, didn’t sound like much fun… So, instead of making the entire drive we did the Twin Falls hike which is pretty much at the start of the Road to Hana.

It was a pretty easy hike and it didn’t take much time at all to get to the falls. And while I would recommend sneakers or water shoes, I managed to do it in slippers. The kids had no problem getting to it and while they wanted to jump in, I had to put the brakes on that idea. As you can see, my older son really “went out on a limb!” BTW, this also falls in the FREE category.

Nakalele Blowhole and Maui’s Heart Shaped Rock – This was a last-minute add to our agenda. We decided to trek to Lahaina for breakfast at Slappy Cakes and got the idea to check out these landmarks since we’d be on that side of the island. About 8 miles north of Kapalua, park when you see the mileage marker that says 38.5. You will literally be pulling off to the side of the road, and you will see other people doing it too. Once again I opted to keep my slippers on, but for this hike, you are literally going down on dirt and rock, so shoes are probably a better idea.

The kids were pretty amused watching the tide come in and out, and seeing how it would spout out the blowhole. We did see some pretty good ones, where they got sprayed, but catching that on camera requires a little more patience and skill than I have. Please be careful with the kids (grown ups too), when it’s a little more “active,” it can be dangerous. And, across from the blowhole you can also find a heart-shaped hole that’s formed in the middle of the rocks. LOVE!

Snorkeling – Of course when you’re on an island, going to the beach and taking part in some water activities is a must, and snorkeling is a great way to see some ocean wonders. One option is to take a snorkel boat, where you sail out to a destination with prime snorkeling conditions. On this trip we chose to sail an afternoon excursion with Pride of Maui.

This was a great decision, because we went in the afternoon  for a turtle snorkel, and didn’t have to wake up too early, and it was a shorter sail – perfect for kids, plus it was much more budget friendly for us. Food, drinks, equipment and instruction were included, and I would highly recommend it. One of the highlights of the trip was actually swimming and seeing sea turtles in the ocean! After the snorkeling and on our way back to shore, they fire up the grill and BBQ, while you can take in all the views from the open water.

Another option for a family friendly snorkel boat is Trilogy I have sailed with this tour company in the past and they provide exceptional service and experiences in Maui too. And if going on a boat isn’t your jam, there are several spots on Maui where you can swim out to a reef from shore and see all kids of sea life. We went to Ulua Beach in Wailea, where the sand is soft and the water is calm. I didn’t have to swim (walk) out very far to see tropical fish and the vibe there is very relaxing.

Hawaiian Luau – Whether it’s your first time to Hawaii or you are a regular visitor, a luau is always a good time. It’s an opportunity to learn more about Hawaiian (and Polynesian) culture, with vibrant performances, traditional island foods and (usually) an open bar! Who doesn’t love a good luau!? On this trip we took in the Te Au Moana luau in Wailea.

It was a great dinner show, where all the keiki (kids) were invited to get up on the stage and learn a little hula, plus we snapped photos with the performers after the show too!

I also splurged on these fun Hawaiian print shorts sets for my boys and they couldn’t wait to wear their festive outfits for the occasion.

Hawaiian Shave Ice – Vacation is a great time to indulge in desserts and the one dessert you can’t pass up in Hawaii is their famous shave ice! We pretty much had shave ice every day of our vacation and did a tour of a few of the many spots where you can feast on the tasty desserts.

Watch a Hawaiian Sunset – The sunsets are really gorgeous in Maui and it doesn’t cost a thing to enjoy one! We stayed on western side of Maui in Kihei, and pretty much anywhere along the shoreline made for a great spot to watch the sky and see al the colors as the sun goes down. Be sure to check what tie the sun sets, and get there at least 30 minutes ahead of time, because it moves pretty quick, and you don’t want to miss it.

5 Fun Kid Stops in San Diego

sd5

Right before school kicked in, we took a trip south to visit San Diego. In 4 days and 3 nights we found some great spots to hang out with the kiddos, that were fun for the whole family!

sd

1. Seaport Village – Take a nice walk along the San Diego Bay and take in the beautiful views as you make your way along Harbor Drive to Seaport Village. We began our walk with brunch in the Gaslamp district before walking around Petco Park (home of the San Diego Padres), then toward the water and up to Seaport Village’s cute strip of shops and restaurants, centered around a gazebo where we ran into some live music and fun vibes. Keep walking north of Seaport Village and you’ll run into the USS Midway Museum at Navy Pier.

sd1

2. Sea World San Diego – It’s the perfect combination of sea life and thrill rides. The boys enjoyed several up close encounters with the animals, and also got their fix of amusement park rides. We went to the park on a Monday and while it was busier than we expected, wait times were easy and we covered the entire park and took in the dolphin show too.

sd2 sd6

3. Coronado Beach – Out of all my visits to San Diego over the years, one place I had yet to visit was Coronado Island, so I decided to make the short trek across the bridge to check out Coronado Beach. The sand is powdery fine and soft, it’s littered with gorgeous gold flecks. There’s a huge beach area before you get to the water and there’s plenty of room to play. My children got a kick out of searching for seashells in the sand and the occasional navy air craft that would pass overhead.

sd3

4. Mission Valley – We stayed in the Mission Valley area where there are many options for accommodations. The location is central to so many places and was very convenient to downtown and the Gaslamp district, Mission Bay, Balboa Park and Old Town. There are many of the familiar strip mall stores and restaurants, and an open air shopping mall to hang out at too. The boys couldn’t resist taking their turn at the lifesize chess board at the mall.

sd4

5. Mission Bay – Our last stop on this San Diego visit was to Mission Bay. We rented a surrey to check out the sights and rode it along the Bay. All that pedaling worked up our appetites, so we walked toward Mission Beach where we enjoyed yummy burgers at Coaster Bar & Grill. The grill is located right off Mission Beach and across from Belmont Park. Belmont Park has a fair number of amusement rides and fair food, plus a fun arcade for the kids to burn off some energy.

Summer Stop: Chicago with Kids

chi4

We jump started our summer with a trip to Chicago after school let out. And, what I love about the Windy City is that there’s so much to do and see for all ages, and one place I always make it a point to visit is Millenium Park!

chi2

Turns out there’s a new addition adjacent to the park since our previous visit to Chi City and that’s Maggie Daley Park. It’s near the Lake Michigan Shoreline and is filled with awesome play structures for climbing, sliding, jumping, running, etc… It’s pretty massive and there are several areas for imaginative play! My boys loved the castle/tower structures, and my advice for parents is to keep your eyes peeled, because as big and exciting as it is…you could easily lose sight of your child. However, if you’ve got your runnign shoes on, the play structures can accommodate grown-up sizes too!

chi3 chi1

A couple of the other fun areas for more boys were the ship and the lighthouse! Where were these kinds of playgrounds when I was a kid!?

chi6

Okay, so back to “The Bean.” I don’t know what it is about this piece of art, but people love it, it’s a total photo opp and so we stopped for a snap there too. The boys really got a kick out of looking at their reflections in its metallic shell .

chi5 chi7

Exploring both of the parks an certainly be a day long outing or even two days… There’s plenty to play see and do. I love looking at the tall skyscrapers in the backdrop, or Lake Michigan to the east. And — for lunch, it’s an easy walk into downtown for some food and shopping too!

And — while Buckingham Fountain is a sight to see at any time of day, if you can, cruise by at night when it’s lit up in different colors to a musical soundtrack!

Holidays 2014: 5 Memorable Moments

I enjoyed a really wonderful Christmas and New Year holiday week, with my family on the West Coast recently…and while it’s back to work and back to reality, I can’t help but continue to bask and smile at how awesome it all turned out! I mean the term “holidays” often conjure up visions of stress, fatigue and even panic – especially as parents, along with all the warm, fuzzy notions of the magic of the season.

pier39

Well, this time around we decided to pack it up and fly west for a week to be with my side of the family and friends. We purchased air tickets at a premium (holiday) price, which already had me feeling like is this really worth it, then when it came time to depart, we faced multiple flight delays and a standby fate at our original airport and the one we rerouted to…so when we eventually made it to our desired destination, a full 24 hours later had passed! Talk about a Mommy’s travel nightmare. I kept thinking I was going to run out of milk, diapers and food for my toddlers…not to mention my toddlers had to endure LONG wait times in the gate area of just hanging around while the clocked tick and we waited for our names to be called.

To their credit, my boys did exceptionally well, I think I was more of the wreck, worrying if we’d make it to the family Christmas Eve gathering, disappointed with the lack of info and options on how to get where we needed to be, frustrated at the delays (and layovers) I had hoped to avoid, etc… Luckily when we finally got to where we were going, it was nothing short of an amazing family vacation.

So, here are my top 5 most memorable moments from the 2014 holidays:

Jake and the Never Land Pirates Ship

pirates

We stayed with my baby sister Alison during the trip and she pulled out all the stops for my boys to make them feel right at home, starting with a pop up play tent, themed after Jake and the Never Land Pirates! I couldn’t get over how cool this thing was…where were these when I was a kid? My photo probably doesn’t do it justice either…there was even a basketball hoop on the mast!

San Francisco – Pier 39

pier391

The day after Christmas we took a trip into the city and did the “tourist” thing at Pier 39. It was a beautiful day, with crystal clear skies and not “cold” at all by San Francisco standards… We attempted a picturesque family photo by the Bay, my two sisters came to hang out….

pier393 pier392

I mean they have a playground right there too, next to a marina with a view of the SF Bay – it doesn’t get any better, and my boys also got their ice cream fix with Aunties.

Golden State Warriors Game

warriors

We had a family outing to a Golden State Warriors game. Basketball is big in our family, we grew up on it, we play it, we love going to games… Right now the Warriors are a top team in the NBA and we got all of us together to go to a game. My family, each of my siblings and their significant other’s and my Mom! These gatherings are rare and it was SO much fun for the boys.

warriors1

Raef had a huge container of popcorn and loved every minute of eating it…ALL!

New Year’s Eve Slumber Party Shin Dig

nye

For NYE, we got together with some of my closest and oldest (meaning since elementary school) friends to ring in the new year. It was good times with all the families together in one house, the kids running around and taking care of each other, while the adults socialized and enjoyed ourselves too.

Playdates

playdate1playdate  playdate2

However, the most memorable moment of the holiday vacay – and technically it’s moments, were the several play dates and visits we had with close friends. It’s so fun and really heartwarming to meet the children of the people I have been friends with since childhood and college….the pre-Mom days. And — to see our children all interact together is THE BEST!!

Road Trippin with Tots

Screen shot 2014-05-28 at 8.43.54 PM

My family recently embarked on a 15 hour road trip (to coincide with our out of state move), with our infant and toddler sons in tow…yup, driving with our 10 month and 22 month old baby boys. I must admit I was pretty anxious leading up to the ride, trying to plan and figure out what would be the best “plan” for making it to our destination with minimal whining, crying, screaming and complaining. Plus, other than a trip I had made with them to Orlando and Tampa (from Miami), we’d never hit the road with them before…

All in all it turned out pretty good and we avoided any major meltdowns and were able to make the 15 hour trip in good time! Our strategy to first drive to Jacksonville (5 hours + an hour stop halfway), during the daytime, with a lunch break and their afternoon naps while finishing the first leg of the drive, then a late afternoon swim/dinner break with a routine “bath” before the nightly bedtime, before finally doing an overnight 10 hour haul to Virginia…worked! Sure, there were small cries and fussy moments during our red eye drive, but doing that stretch while they were tired and asleep for the most part, proved to be for the best. Yes, Mommy and Daddy were beyond exhausted when we arrived at our destination, however the non-stop strategy was best for us. We did keep lots of milk, snacks AND an iPad on deck too!

carseat

I just can’t imagine driving for long periods while they’re awake and wiggling, squirming and struggling to free themselves from the car seats…or the alternative making an excessive amount of stops. Before our trip I also solicited advise from some more experienced “road trippin” families, and I thought I’d share some of their suggestions with you too!

Christy – “iPad with lotsa new cartoons/movies…and headphones for each munchkin.”

Michelle – “Tons of snacks, stop at a park a long the way, wrap small toys and give them “good boy” presents. Drive fast!

Ayana – “15 hours isn’t so bad. I agree with iPad, toys, and stopping one time to play. If you can’t find a park or it’s not weather conducive, remember that places like McDonalds and Chick-Fil-A have those indoor play areas too if you’re in a pinch.”

Monica – “Early morning or late evening drives worked for us. They slept while we had our time to talk without interruption. An exhausting activity like swimming or playing at a park before driving might help as well.

Rochelle – “We took our time and didn’t try to go for longer than 6hrs total driving. iPads, toys, songs and a long lunch break made all the trips pleasant for everyone.”

Karla – “Benadryl and the frozen soundtrack!

Ann – “Say a prayer.”

Robin – “Plan a swimming stop. That always makes kids exhausted.

Erica – “Stop to pee, otherwise keep going, you’ll be there before you know it.

Thanks to everyone who chimed in and wished us well on our trip! I’m so thankful we made it without incident…and this completely reinforces my gut to fly when possible..even if it might cost a few more bucks…I have the anxious, “are we there yet” issues…I’m not cut out for long treks on the road! 😉
