Haute Mom: Emily Kuhlman

emily kName: Emily Kuhlman
Children & Ages: Avery (3) and Savannah (1)
Hometown/Current Location: Overland Park, KS
Quick Bio: I’ve always been a girls girl. A girly girl. A sorority girl. For a while I was a pageant girl. Now I’m the mom of two girls. My career background is in politics and recruiting, but now I’m the full-time mommy of Avery (3) and Savvy (1), and I have a fabulous side gig as a Stella and Dot Stylist. I married a really smart guy who thinks I’m ridiculous and charming. I have an impressive collection of books about Jackie Kennedy. My style is simple and practical but not boring; I think pretty much any day can be saved by Suave dry shampoo, cheap sunglasses and a statement necklace. And one time Andy Cohen tweeted me. It was the greatest day ever. You can read about my adventures balancing glam life and fam life at MrsKansasMommy.com and follow me on IG and Twitter @MrsKansasMommy.

Q: What is your “go to” snack/toy/show/trick when your kids start to fuss?
A: I practice an ancient form of parenting called bribery (brahy-buh-ree) which in layman’s terms means I carry a lot of DumDum suckers in my purse.

Q: How do you balance being a Mommy and keeping your sense of self?
A: I hate when people give vague, cliche answers to this question so I’ll tell you specifically: 1. I have a hobby with Stella and Dot that injects a little glamor into my daily life and gives me an excuse to leave the house, wear jewelry and drink wine. 2. I am vain. I would rather let my kids make a mess of my closet while I get ready, than go to the library with a clean closet and no make up.

Q: What is your favorite piece of advice to new Moms?
A: My favorite advice to newly pregnant moms is don’t eat like a maniac just because you’re pregnant, because learning to care for a newborn while you are at the heaviest weight you’ve ever been in your life is SUCKSVILLE. I learned this the hard way.

Q: How would you describe your parenting style?
A: (Takes quiz on Buzzfeed.) Um, in the words of Amy Poehler’s character from Mean Girls, “I’m not like a regular mom. I’m a cool mom.” Everyday when I get Avery from preschool: “Soooo….what is up? Whats the 411? What has everybody been up to? What’s the hot gossip? Tell me everything. What have you guys been listening to? What are the cool jams?” She is 3 years old and she once told me I was “exhausting her” because I asked so many times if she wanted a piece of quiche. I’d say I’m a good mix of completely overbearing and a little eccentric but my kids seem to love me.

Q: Describe your “Haute Mom” (fashion) style!
A: Basic T in white or black, Else Skinny Jeans, Tieks and of course a Stella and Dot statement necklace! Top off the look with dollar store sunglasses. I NEVER wear expensive sunglasses because you know your kids are just going to grab them off your face anyway!
