South Bay Summer Staycation

San Jose is my hometown, and it’s not “far” from where I’ve been living in the Bay Area, but with traffic adding to the drive time, sometimes it’s nice to just make a visit a staycation! My boys had been asking to visit the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, so I decided to book a hotel in the South Bay (Silicon Valley) and make it a fun weekend.

Our first stop was the Santa Clara Marriott. We had a great room (at a great rate) overlooking the pool and we stayed in a newly renovated room. It certainly had the resort feel and there were several places to eat/shop nearby, as well as on property. The location was also desirable since it’s just off 2 major freeways and a block away from our other staycation destination, California’s Great America!

I did think it was a bit ambitious to do 2 theme parks back to back, but I decided we should just go for it! We checked into our hotel on a Friday afternoon and after a Saturday morning swim, we headed out through the Santa Cruz Mountains to hit the boardwalk.

I have fond memories of visiting the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk as a child, and I love that so much of it is still the same. Parking was a little crazy, so once we did a loop along the main strip, we fortunately found street parking in a nearby residential neighborhood and walked the 8 blocks to get to the attractions.

You can purchase tickets for the rides or get an all day unlimited wristband. We had wristbands and were able to enjoy several rides. A couple of my favorites and Santa Cruz staples are the Giant Dipper and the Haunted Mansion! I was excited to experience both with my family and we had a great day there. The best part, twisted soft serve ice cream cones.

The next day was Sunday and we woke up bright and early for a day of fun at California’s Great America. Since we have been there many times before, we decided to spend the first part of our visit at Boomerang Bay – the water park inside Great America, and I’m so glad we did!!

Boomerang Bay is included in the regular price of admission, but once you step into this part of the park, it’s a whole new experience! The waterpark has slides, a lazy river, wave pool, lagoon and lots of areas to soak in the sun and relax. Plus, there are cabanas you can reserve too!

After some water play and too many Dippin’ Dots, the boys decided they wanted to hit the rest of the park and get on the rides. It was a perfect balance for my kids, the lines weren’t too long and they got to do some of them multiple times. My younger son actually rode the Gold Stryker 2 times by himself…mind you, he barely cleared the 48″ height requirement!

All in all, it was a fun filled weekend, perfect for our crew. We enjoyed being on “vacation” and we weren’t too far from home. I can’t wait until the next time we do it all again!

8 Fun Family Activities in Maui

I think Maui is a great vacation destination anytime of year, whether you’re looking to travel as a couple, with friends, family or even solo! This summer, I was so excited to take my kids for the very first time, along with their Dad who had never been…plus my sisters and Mom joined us too. For me, it was my third trip to the island, and while I had already been able to explore much of the island, there was so much more I hadn’t done, and it was my first trip with my family.

When I was doing research for this trip, a couple of my main priorities for selecting activities and things to do, were age appropriateness and cost! So, now that we’re home and I’ve had some time to reflect on our fun times on the Valley Isle, I’m sharing my “8 Fun Family Activities in Maui.”

Ali’i Kula Lavender Farm – Take a drive upcountry to Kula where the temperatures are cooler and you can experience the beauty and agriculture of the island. This is an easy drive and you can spend as little or as much time as you want here (I’d say give it 2 hours). The farm’s slopes are filled with different varieties of lavender and there’s also plenty of other tropical plants decorating its landscape.

My boys had a great time embarking on the farm’s scavenger hunt, and because of it we got to explore pretty much every corner of the farm and take in all the gorgeous views. Plus, they gave us a special prize when we completed the hunt. The costs to enter Ali’i Lavender Farm is minimal and they offer a military discount too!

Strawberry Picking – If you make the drive to Kula, another fun stop is Kula Country Farms where you (and the kids) can pick your own strawberries. They also have a cute farm stand and offer island refreshments that make it worth the stop. Just pay for what you pick!

Hike to Twin Falls – One of the most popular excursions in Maui is the “Road to Hana.” I have done this drive before, and while it is beautiful and filled with awe-inspiring scenery, the thought of being in the car for 3-hours along a windy road with wiggly kids, didn’t sound like much fun… So, instead of making the entire drive we did the Twin Falls hike which is pretty much at the start of the Road to Hana.

It was a pretty easy hike and it didn’t take much time at all to get to the falls. And while I would recommend sneakers or water shoes, I managed to do it in slippers. The kids had no problem getting to it and while they wanted to jump in, I had to put the brakes on that idea. As you can see, my older son really “went out on a limb!” BTW, this also falls in the FREE category.

Nakalele Blowhole and Maui’s Heart Shaped Rock – This was a last-minute add to our agenda. We decided to trek to Lahaina for breakfast at Slappy Cakes and got the idea to check out these landmarks since we’d be on that side of the island. About 8 miles north of Kapalua, park when you see the mileage marker that says 38.5. You will literally be pulling off to the side of the road, and you will see other people doing it too. Once again I opted to keep my slippers on, but for this hike, you are literally going down on dirt and rock, so shoes are probably a better idea.

The kids were pretty amused watching the tide come in and out, and seeing how it would spout out the blowhole. We did see some pretty good ones, where they got sprayed, but catching that on camera requires a little more patience and skill than I have. Please be careful with the kids (grown ups too), when it’s a little more “active,” it can be dangerous. And, across from the blowhole you can also find a heart-shaped hole that’s formed in the middle of the rocks. LOVE!

Snorkeling – Of course when you’re on an island, going to the beach and taking part in some water activities is a must, and snorkeling is a great way to see some ocean wonders. One option is to take a snorkel boat, where you sail out to a destination with prime snorkeling conditions. On this trip we chose to sail an afternoon excursion with Pride of Maui.

This was a great decision, because we went in the afternoon  for a turtle snorkel, and didn’t have to wake up too early, and it was a shorter sail – perfect for kids, plus it was much more budget friendly for us. Food, drinks, equipment and instruction were included, and I would highly recommend it. One of the highlights of the trip was actually swimming and seeing sea turtles in the ocean! After the snorkeling and on our way back to shore, they fire up the grill and BBQ, while you can take in all the views from the open water.

Another option for a family friendly snorkel boat is Trilogy I have sailed with this tour company in the past and they provide exceptional service and experiences in Maui too. And if going on a boat isn’t your jam, there are several spots on Maui where you can swim out to a reef from shore and see all kids of sea life. We went to Ulua Beach in Wailea, where the sand is soft and the water is calm. I didn’t have to swim (walk) out very far to see tropical fish and the vibe there is very relaxing.

Hawaiian Luau – Whether it’s your first time to Hawaii or you are a regular visitor, a luau is always a good time. It’s an opportunity to learn more about Hawaiian (and Polynesian) culture, with vibrant performances, traditional island foods and (usually) an open bar! Who doesn’t love a good luau!? On this trip we took in the Te Au Moana luau in Wailea.

It was a great dinner show, where all the keiki (kids) were invited to get up on the stage and learn a little hula, plus we snapped photos with the performers after the show too!

I also splurged on these fun Hawaiian print shorts sets for my boys and they couldn’t wait to wear their festive outfits for the occasion.

Hawaiian Shave Ice – Vacation is a great time to indulge in desserts and the one dessert you can’t pass up in Hawaii is their famous shave ice! We pretty much had shave ice every day of our vacation and did a tour of a few of the many spots where you can feast on the tasty desserts.

Watch a Hawaiian Sunset – The sunsets are really gorgeous in Maui and it doesn’t cost a thing to enjoy one! We stayed on western side of Maui in Kihei, and pretty much anywhere along the shoreline made for a great spot to watch the sky and see al the colors as the sun goes down. Be sure to check what tie the sun sets, and get there at least 30 minutes ahead of time, because it moves pretty quick, and you don’t want to miss it.

Shave Ice Everyday in Maui

Maui is one of my favorite places to relax, unwind, recharge and experience the beauty of nature. So, when we went on a family vacation to the Valley Isle this summer, I was so excited to share it with my boys for the very first time…and leading up to the adventure, one of their big asks was if they could have shave ice everyday! And you know what, we did… Their shave ice fascination started out when I went to Oahu for work and visited Aulani, they saw me make a “Mickey Shave Ice” on TV and after that, they associated Hawaii with the sweet treat! Well, they were definitely on point with that association, and I didn’t want them to be disappointed. Here’s our rundown of Shave Ice in Maui…

Peace, Love and Shave Ice – Kihei

This is a cute shave ice hut in the middle of a strip mall in Kihei. It was our first shave ice stop while in Maui and it didn’t disappoint, the hardest part was selecting the flavors. When you’re 4 and 5, like my boys were at the time of our trip, the “look” is just as important as the taste…so when for me, when asking what flavors they want..the response is by color. LOL!

There are so many options to pick from and although I read them all out to them, I still had to use my Mom senses to pick for them. The hut has a cute wrap around counter, and since shave ice isn’t really a to-go item, they ate it on site before it melted away.

S & Q’s Coffee and Shave Ice Shack – Kihei

S & Q’s shave ice was another fun spot across the street from the beach along Kihei Road. It was a short walk from where we were staying and had an inviting walk-up vibe. At this point my boys were fixated on “rainbow” shave ice and this satisfied their cravings. They have some nice outdoor seating where you can do some people watching and even watch the sunset.

Ululani’s Gourmet Hawaiian Shave Ice – Paia

Ululani’s had been recommended to us by friends and so we knew this was one spot that we were going to go for sure to have shave ice. It was really good! They have multiple locations, and we stopped at the one in Paia after our hike to Twin Falls. The way the ice is shaved, it’s so soft and melts in your mouth. They had 2 rainbow versions for my boys and I tried the ‘Sunset Beach” with a snow cap (aka condensed milk) topping. YUMMY! I’m sure all the shave ice places do this, but here I noticed how they poke holes into the ice once it’s shaved and that allows the syrup flavors to really sink in. My sisters also opted to have ice cream scoops under their shave ice creations.

Lahaina Ice Cream Parlour – Lahaina

In Lahaina, for our daily ice shave hunt, we actually veered a little left and replaced it with Dole Whip, which is an equally delicious dessert to feast on in Maui – truly one of my all-time favs. It’s pineapple (Dole) soft serve! It’s such a refreshing treat and instantly became Isaiah’s favorite dessert that day! The Lahaina Ice Cream Parlour also serves shave ice and regular ice cream…we got stuck on Dole Whip on this outing.

It’s creamy, pineapple goodness…and it melts, so eat it QUICK!

Gus’ Hawaiian Shave Ice – Kihei

Gus’ Hawaiian Shave Ice was not only the most convenient shave ice for us, but our family favorite. It operates out of an old school VW van and is more along the lines of a food truck, but regularly posts up on Kihei across the street of Kamaole Beach Park I. Gus’ can also be found on Saturday’s at the swap meet near Kahului Airport. When we checked into our condo, I had asked about shave ice and was advised the one right out front is the best..and we would have to agree.

Gus’ has all the tropical flavors and a “tigers blood” that my boys became fixated on…. This shave ice is thinly sliced and not only can you add ice cream to your order, they have fruit varieties when it’s like blocks of ice with mango or pineapple inside, then they shave it and you can top it with coconut cream. It’s heavenly…in fact, by the time I remembered to snap a picture (as you can see), I was about halfway done…

So there you have it, our Hawaiian shave ice tour in Maui. And, while we did get our fix for the week, we still left room to try some other spot whenever we return. Just make sure to get shave ice at least once, twice or everyday when you’re on vacay!

5 Fun Kid Stops in San Diego

sd5

Right before school kicked in, we took a trip south to visit San Diego. In 4 days and 3 nights we found some great spots to hang out with the kiddos, that were fun for the whole family!

sd

1. Seaport Village – Take a nice walk along the San Diego Bay and take in the beautiful views as you make your way along Harbor Drive to Seaport Village. We began our walk with brunch in the Gaslamp district before walking around Petco Park (home of the San Diego Padres), then toward the water and up to Seaport Village’s cute strip of shops and restaurants, centered around a gazebo where we ran into some live music and fun vibes. Keep walking north of Seaport Village and you’ll run into the USS Midway Museum at Navy Pier.

sd1

2. Sea World San Diego – It’s the perfect combination of sea life and thrill rides. The boys enjoyed several up close encounters with the animals, and also got their fix of amusement park rides. We went to the park on a Monday and while it was busier than we expected, wait times were easy and we covered the entire park and took in the dolphin show too.

sd2 sd6

3. Coronado Beach – Out of all my visits to San Diego over the years, one place I had yet to visit was Coronado Island, so I decided to make the short trek across the bridge to check out Coronado Beach. The sand is powdery fine and soft, it’s littered with gorgeous gold flecks. There’s a huge beach area before you get to the water and there’s plenty of room to play. My children got a kick out of searching for seashells in the sand and the occasional navy air craft that would pass overhead.

sd3

4. Mission Valley – We stayed in the Mission Valley area where there are many options for accommodations. The location is central to so many places and was very convenient to downtown and the Gaslamp district, Mission Bay, Balboa Park and Old Town. There are many of the familiar strip mall stores and restaurants, and an open air shopping mall to hang out at too. The boys couldn’t resist taking their turn at the lifesize chess board at the mall.

sd4

5. Mission Bay – Our last stop on this San Diego visit was to Mission Bay. We rented a surrey to check out the sights and rode it along the Bay. All that pedaling worked up our appetites, so we walked toward Mission Beach where we enjoyed yummy burgers at Coaster Bar & Grill. The grill is located right off Mission Beach and across from Belmont Park. Belmont Park has a fair number of amusement rides and fair food, plus a fun arcade for the kids to burn off some energy.

Fun SoCal Stops with Kids

IMG_0340

On our recent trip to SoCal (we live in NorCal), the main focus of our trip was Anaheim aka Disneyland! There’s may ways to enjoy Orange County and while a trip to the Disneyland Resort and theme parks can easily fill more than a few days, there is more to do and see in the area. A couple of my good girlfriends live in the area and since we were there… we visited with them, and they also provided the ideas on a couple of family-friendly fun spots the kids were sure to enjoy.

image1

First up the Irvine Spectrum Center. Located in Irvine, this is essentially an outdoor shopping mall…BUT it has so much more. Beyond the shops, there’s an awesome (free) outdoor play area resembling a pirate ship.

IMG_0335

There’s also a Carousel, Giant Wheel and Kiddie Train. You have to purchase tickets to enjoy these attractions, we chose to test out the carousel.

IMG_0352

And — when it comes to food choices. There are several restaurants at the center, from fast, food-court style options to casual sit down and more sophisticated dining too. We ended up at Red Robin, hence the balloons! I spied more than few sweet/dessert spots too.

image2

My friends both commented how it’s a nice place to hang out in the summer when the days are hot and the nights stay warm. There’s lots of room for the kids to roam and open grass areas too.

IMG_0380

What visit to Southern California would be complete without a trek to the beach! Being there at the end of February, you never know if it’ll be warm enough to go, but since we had rockin’ weather, we decided to bust out the swimwear and hit the coast. My friend recommended Corona del Mar Beach at Inspiration Point, which is in the Newport Beach area.

IMG_0365

It was a beautiful stretch of sand, and the waves were perfect for our toddlers. Since technically it was still winter, there wasn’t much of a crowd and we had lots of room to play. The water was cold, but you know kids, they don’t care! So they got their feet wet, jumped some waves and played around. Good thing Dad was game to go in… I got to sit in the sand and just watch.

IMG_0371 IMG_0378

There is a parking lot adjacent to the beach, but we just parked along Ocean Blvd. It is a residential street, but we found free parking no problem. We also got in some good exercise because it’s a very long steep staircase down from the street down to the beach and then the climb back up too.

IMG_0366

Overall, so glad we got the chance to explore off the Disneyland strip and enjoy more of what SoCal has to offer.

Gear Up for the Beach “Baby”

beach

Summertime and trips to the beach with the kiddos can certainly make for the perfect family outing… And packing and having the right gear once you hit the sand can make the day that much more FUN! Our favorite time to go to the beach is first thing in the morning. Once we get up and eat breakfast, dress and get ready, we load up the car and head out. Of course this takes some pre-planning, but heading out early (in my house) is key. First, the kids are fresh and ready for the day (less likely to meltdown). Second, it’s so much easier to find parking…and subsequently a spot on the beach. Smaller crowds always equal less headaches. I love the morning sun and the “fresh” sand. Third, you make the most of your day. Whether you do a full day at the beach or just start it there, a jump start always makes a better day for us.

nursery tent

When thinking about the setup and what essentials to pack…you definitely need more “stuff” when you’ve got the kids…but sometimes you try to minimize what you’re hauling onto the beach because it can be a trek from where you started (parking) to where you end up, and it’s not exactly convenient to roll stuff on the sand (i.e strollers, carts, etc…). So, this is what works for me. I use an old flat or fitted bed sheet to lay on the sand to mark our spot. Fitted actually works well because you can fill the elastic sides with sand to hold it down! 😉 Sheets are lighter and less bulky than towels and this way your towels aren’t covered with sand when you actually want to use them to dry off!

nursery2

I also invested in a “Lil Nursery” tent. It’s small and lightweight and offer shade for a small child if they want to nap or get away from the direct sun. The set up on this one is pretty easy and while my kids have yet to actually nap, it also sort of is a good place to keep our personal belongings that we don’t want out in the open. And it’s perfect to use for diaper changes….BONUS! You can also find great family tent options here.

pool

Okay now, the plastic ring pool is SO key! I won’t claim this idea as my own (I got it from a fellow Mom), but it’s perfect when you have a non-walker who can just chill in there and enjoy the beach with everyone else and you can set it up right at your feet. I picked up the inflatable pool at the drugstore and it was cheap, like $5, and worth every penny. I bring along a small hand pump, inflate it, add some ocean water and voila, fun and easy way to keep them cool while you lay out and catch some sun.

shovel

With the tots you can’t forget the beach toys. Depending how much you want to bring a bucket and a shovel are usually enough. Although we tend to bring multiple items with rakes, molds and other various beach toys. The huge blue bag we got from IKEA (the cheap one they sell at checkout), works so excellent to pack the toys, tent and towels in.

cooler

And finally – I can’t forget the cooler. There are a variety of coolers available, we have a medium size one that rolls, but also a more portable over the shoulder insulated bag that works well too. It’s always a good idea to keep milk, water and any fruits “refrigerated.” Other items for a day of fun in the sun…sunblock, swim diapers, wipes, tissue and music!

vabeach

I don’t do beach chairs or lug along extra umbrellas as of now…maybe when my guys get a little bigger and can be a bit more help to transport the items onto the sand. But this is what works for me! I hope these suggestions can work for you too.

Mermaid Birthday Party

A post written for 53 Weeks by Arlyn M.

My little girl was turning three and now well aware of what was entailed at birthday parties (as we didn’t have a big soiree for her second birthday). The deciding factor on what theme we would go with was the venue. Naomi was in love with the beach and wanted to go every day. It was only appropriate that it would be an option for her party. Ah, the perks of a having a summer baby. Once that was decided, naturally we went with a Little Mermaid theme. It was a toss up between her and Snow White. So, my go to inspiration boards, Pinterest and Etsy! Search “mermaid birthday” and voila! I decided not to go the Disney Little Mermaid route and instead found so many other cute Mermaid theme alternatives.
The invitation I found at Etsy Shop, Your Invites. The graphic designer had a whole “Mermaid” bundled package which included everything from cupcake toppers, water bottle wraps, birthday banner, favor tags and thank you cards. It couldn’t be more perfect (especially for a mother of two high energy little girls)! It was basically a one-stop-shop. I ordered the personalized package and after a few proof emails back and forth, I had the finished PDF product in just a couple days. Now time to print on the card stock paper (photo paper works fabulous as well) and assemble. I also requested for a JPEG file of the invitation only so I could just email it out to our guests. It saves paper and postage and is super easy. Invitation, birthday banner and decoration, CHECK.imageedit_4_9552835203To add to the party décor, I had to make one of those fabric garlands to hang somewhere. I hung the garland on the beach and used it to designate an area for the kids to hang out and play with the sand toys we put out as party favors. The assorted sand toys were already bundled (from our neighborhood Target). I simply took some twine and tied on the favor tags.

IMG_6331

Now for the cake. Since we were having it at the beach, I wanted to find a local bakery. My Cupcake Corner was literally just around the corner from our beach location. They had raving reviews on Yelp plus they deliver! Kelly, the owner was so helpful in helping us choose the cupcake flavors and design ideas. I decided to just use cupcake toppers to decorate but Kelly wanted to incorporate the theme on some of the cupcakes. She did an aqua colored frosting to look like the ocean and then sprinkled burnt coconut shreds to look like the sandy beach.

IMG_6338 IMG_6336

The mermaid party wouldn’t be complete without the birthday girl dressed as the part. I found my daughter’s dress on Etsy, Once Upon A Time Tutus. An Ariel-inspired tutu dress. It also helped to have a creative and crafty girlfriend. We topped off the dress with a gorgeous handmade starfish hairpiece (thanks Auntie Roselle). It was a bejeweled starfish set on a feathered piece accented with faux pearls and sequins detail.

IMG_6360
We kept the party small and simple.  Thanks to some easy ideas I was able to sit back and watch my daughter enjoy her big day.  I felt the details were just enough to keep my little mermaid entertained and impressed. More importantly, she had a blast and enjoyed having our dear family and friends gathered at her favorite place to celebrate.
