Q: How would you describe your parenting style?
A: Don’t stress about the little things, I am strict with big things and let my children know that I am here to listen and not judge (which is not always easy), but this way they talk to me about things and I try and lead them down the right path.

Q: Share your best or favorite place for a family vacation and tell us why.
A: I really like any family vacation because it gives us a chance to be together as a family unit. I also take each child (throughout the year), on a weekend trip alone, which gives me a chance to have some one-on-one time with each one of my kids.

Q: What’s your most memorable Mommy moment to date?
A: Celebrating each child’s birthday by decorating their room while they are sleeping the night before, and then in the morning (the entire family) with breakfast in bed and singing happy birthday. Going into labor early with my fourth son Isaac, due to Hurricane Katrina (was suppose to be a tropical stom and barometric pressure dropped); planning and celebrating my son’s bar mitzvah as well as my daughters bat mitzvah.

Q: As a Mommy what is it that you feel you do “right”?
A: That family comes first and no matter what we have to be there for each other.

Q: What’s the best surprise you’ve ever done for your kids/family?
A: My sisters and I planned a surprise 70th birthday excursion (with husbands) for my Dad to his home state of West Virginia. But, I have to confess we stayed at a five star resort.

Our Day Out with Thomas

1896953_10152282753353582_653413111_n
Thomas the Tank Engine (Thomas the Train) recently made a South Florida stop at the Gold Coast Railroad Museum and it was a great opportunity to make it a family day! My sons are still on the young side, but lately Raef has been saying “Choo Choo” every time he sees a picture of a train and he does know who Thomas and Percy are, as he has them as bath toys, so we figured it’d be a fun outing. The event’s main feature was a train ride (it basically looped the museum, about 20 minutes or so from boarding to ride to exit), but there were also other attractions for all the kiddos big and small. They also had a Sir Topham Hat photo area set up for people who wanted to meet and snap a picture with him.

There was a story time area on board a train and also an imagination station where they had multiple train tables, coloring areas and even ipads set up for play! Of course we can’t forget the gift shop, fully stocked with Thomas-themed toys and souvenirs. We picked up Thomas T-Shirt for both boys to commemorate the occasion!

If you have little ones who are Thomas fans, or even if they’re not, this is a fun time with the family that doesn’t take up a whole day, so it works with napper schedules too. My boys can both now boast about their first-ever train ride being aboard Thomas the Tank Engine! Oh and BONUS …. there was a sheet you were given upon entry and if you got it stamped at every “station” at the event, you received a free gift. And — the free gift was a Mega Bloks “Thomas!” Not bad at all!!! 🙂

Biggest Baby Shower – Miami

Any first time parent can relate to the overwhelming task of figuring out the ins and outs of baby products, trying to pick a stroller, baby furniture, create a registry, etc… And — if you’re ever cruised the aisles of baby stuff at the stores without doing your homework, it can be a mind-blowing experience! Well, that’s where the “Biggest Baby Shower” comes in. The event, hosted by Big City Moms, features more than 100 of the best baby and parenting companies in the industry and the “expo” is jam-packed with demonstrations, sampling, products, pampering, educational seminars, etc… you name it!

So, when I heard the Biggest Baby Shower was making a Miami stop, I just had to check it out. My first impression was tons of great stuff going on, and although I’m not exactly a new Mommy anymore, I’m not that far removed…BUT I was amazed at all the new stuff that’s come out since I had my 2 in the 53 week span of July 3, 2012 – July 10, 2013. From new generations of strollers and baby bottles to prenatal drinks to help you get the proper nutrition and folic acid intake while pregnant! I almost felt like I need to get pregnant again just to be able to use some of this stuff…but uh, nah, not right now!

IMG_0814

Anyhow, one of my favorite features of the event was the long row of infant travel systems and strollers. There were brands I had previously researched, and others I had never even heard of… like Joovy, Armadillo, Uppa Baby, Chicco, Orbit Baby, and many more. They were all there available to test drive, with product experts on hand to explain all the features AND answer any and all questions you might have about the different products. Actually all the products there had very knowledgeable reps on hand who took the time to talk with you and familiarize you with what was what and what this and that were for! I mean ultimately, you’re going to have to sort of “assume” or guess which products are going to work for you and your baby, and sometimes it’s trial and error before finding the right pacifier, bottle or stroller, but if you educate yourself ahead of time, or really decide your needs and what’s most important to you, going to this event can help take a lot of the guesswork out and lead you to make an informed decision!

IMG_0816 IMG_0812

Some of the highlights of my rounds around the ballroom were…

  • A (real life) mom who swears by Dr. Smiths Diaper Ointment. She couldn’t stop telling me how wonderful the stuff is and how well it’s worked for her and her children.
  • I sampled Bundle, an organic prenatal beverage …the “Kale” flavor. Hey, folic acid in a bottle! 😉
  • The ladies at the Philips Avent display showed off some of their new bottles to me, while explaining the difference between the different versions they offer. I currently use the traditional bottles for Isaiah.
  • I stopped by the Pediped table, where I saw some of the cutest footwear for babies and toddlers. Shoes are important for growing feet!
  • Lots of organic baby food on hand – Ella’s, Earth’s Best and Happy Family, which are all popular with my babes.IMG_0815

However, I MUST mention the gift bags…these things were beyond major!!! Talk about filled to the brim and completely stuffed with diapers, wipes, bottles, lotions, feeding containers, etc…. The fabulous gift bags were overflowing, stocked full of great products and not just tiny sample size giveaways! If the “admission fee” is a hang up for you, this bag is worth way more than that….so, TOTALLY worth it! I mean seriously, it weighed so much, that I wasn’t sure my arm was going to make it back to the car. So if you’re expecting, want to be expecting or have a newborn at home, and want to get a more intimate, closeup view of all things baby – not in a typical retail environment, go to http://babyshower.bigcitymoms.com and find out when the “Biggest Baby Shower” is making a stop in a city by you!

Here’s the Deal with the “Baby Helmet”…

photo 1

If you’re not familiar with the “baby helmet,” and not sure what it’s all about, this post is for you. First things first, when you see a baby or young child with it, there is nothing “wrong” with the baby. Secondly, it is not to protect their head from falling or head butting, although it may inadvertently be doing that… Lastly, it doesn’t hurt the child nor “squeeze” their head. In our case, my second son Isaiah is now wearing a DOC Band (baby helmet) from Cranial Technologies.

The band is designed to help guide and shape the baby’s head into a more natural, round shape if the baby has asymmetry or flat spots. This condition is plagiocephaly. In Isaiah’s case, he has brachycephaly where the head flattens uniformly, causing a wider and shorter shape…increased head height is also common in baby’s with this condition. And — since these days the recommendation is to place newborns and infants to sleep on their backs (prevents SIDS), rather than their stomach’s, the numbers of kid’s with flat spots has increased.

Screen shot 2014-01-27 at 2.28.13 PM
I started noticing Isaiah’s flat spot pretty early on, it was actually more of an indent where the back plate of his head meets the top plate (sorry for my non-medical terminology). However, when they’re so young, you are waiting for the soft spots to slowly close and they don’t move too much, so even when I tried to rotate his head to each side while he slept, he favored keeping his head straight on…so in his case, his sleep positioning probably didn’t aid much in allowing the head to “round out” early on. At about his 4 month mark when we weren’t seeing the “flat spot” improve as much as we’d hoped, I did a little more research and found the “Noggin Nest” by Boppy. I wish I had come across it sooner, but it is basically a pillow designed to keep the baby’s head from being flat on a surface like a baby swing, stroller, car seat or in the crib…to encourage the shape to be round. I think it helped a lot, but not enough. We were told that 6 months is the best time to have professional evaluation on the “flat spot.” At this point, you’ve given the baby’s head enough time to see if it corrects on its own, but the head is still growing, so not too late to help shape it.

We immediately did a consult with Cranial Tech (makers of DOC Band) and also sought the advice of a craniofacial plastic surgeon. Dr. Chad Perlyn of Miami Children’s Hospital took a look at Isaiah’s head shape and advised us that his case was borderline severe, but not quite. He felt that his head would most likely fix itself and round out over time, but he noted that if we elected to do the baby helmet, it would definitely help. Dr. Perlyn told us that in most cases a child’s head will naturally get to the desired shape, and only a small percentage actually stay flat. Needless to say, after digesting all the information, we decided to go with a DOC Band for Isaiah. Our reasoning is that if Isaiah happened to be in that small percentage that didn’t fix itself, we want to know we did our part to help it round out before it’s too late – i.e. the skull is fully formed!

So, so good…we got it “wrapped” (see DOC Band Swag) at Metro Signs for the custom “design,” and one of his first full night’s wearing it he slept through the whole night! He usually doesn’t…my (big) baby loves to eat! The helmet is pretty light, so the adjustment was easy for him. He wears it 23 hours a day and we clean it and him, when we remove the helmet for bath time. Hopefully his treatment will only be 8-10 weeks, it’s really our decision, when we feel we are happy with the improvement. At every check up they compare his head to a mold of his head when we started, at last check they shaved off a bit more inside the helmet to give room for more growth, which they already saw starting… 🙂 When it’s all said and done, I will write a post on the entire experience!

DOC Band Swag

My son Isaiah is now wearing a DOC Band…it’s a “baby helmet” designed to help shape and guide his head into a more round shape, since in his case he has a flat spot. I’ll write another post about the treatment and process, but this post is going to be more focused on the “swag” aka decor we had done on his helmet! But the quick summary of whats going on is, he has a form of plagiocephaly called brachycephaly, which basically means that the width of his head is considered a bit too wide compared with the length and there is flattening across the back of it. At the end of the day, it’s a cosmetic fix we are really going for here and chances are his head would probably round out on its own without the “helmet,” but after a couple expert opinions, we decided to just do it, as at 6 months it’s the ideal time for treatment, as opposed to down the road when it may be too late, if in fact his head shape did not correct on its own!

Now back to the DOC Band. We were lucky enough to come across Metro Signs in Hollywood, Florida, who as a courtesy to the infants and babies who have to sport the head gear, wrap them at no cost. The vinyl wrap them, just as many cars you see “wrapped” these days! The design can really be anything you want and since we are a sports-oriented family, we decided to go for a design that resembled a football helmet…and we ended up with the Chicago Bears “theme,” because that’s Daddy’s team. I basically let him have his way…this time! 😉

Actually, it’s working out because the colors actually suit a good portion of Isaiah’s current wardrobe. And to Daddy’s credit, he did offer to go half-half with my NFL team being the design’s other half, but I declined…no need to add more to the mix, just wanted a simple clean design!

Screen shot 2014-01-15 at 1.25.19 PMScreen shot 2014-01-15 at 1.25.32 PM

Metro Signs made the process really easy and we couldn’t be more thankful. I had emailed back and forth with one of their sales reps about what I was looking to do, once we found out we’d be getting the DOC Band. Then, once we got it, they measured it, sent us a proof for approval and wrapped it up! Simple as that… and seriously, my kid just looks so darn cute with his helmet, totally game ready!!! I think another plus to decorating it (and there are plenty of options out there, just do an internet search), is that when we are out and about, instead of people looking and staring at him, wondering what that helmet is for and what’s “wrong” with my baby, they are so impressed and in awe of this uber cool “baby helmet,” that we are showered with compliments and smiles everywhere we go!

Haute Mom: Marni Mutrux Meistrell

marniName: Marni Mutrux Meistrell
Child & Age: Grayson, 13 months
Hometown/Current Location: Born in Key West, currently living in downtown Miami
Quick Bio: Not so long ago, I was a big-shot Marketing Director for a booming e-commerce start-up. Now I’m a full-time mom to a baby boy. I channel my energy into raising him, and channel my creativity into my food blog, www.loveandduckfat.com

Q: What is your “go to” snack/toy/show/trick when your kids start to fuss?

A: Right now, my little guy is really picky. The only pre-packaged baby food I can get him to eat is Happy Baby’s mango puree. For a quick snack to keep him occupied, I reach for Plum Organic’s Little Yums Pumpkin and Banana. They leave little mess and are low in sugar. When I need some “quiet time”, I reach for the iPad and play a Baby Einstein video (free on YouTube). They run about 30 minutes long and Grayson loves them.

Q: How do you balance being a Mommy and keeping your sense of self?
A: I keep centered by doing yoga in Grayson’s room while he is playing. Even 10 minutes a day helps me focus. Pouring myself into my blog also helps. It’s the one place where I’m able to accomplish things “just for me”. Bonus me-time: Doing my nails while Grayson takes a bath.

Q: What is your favorite piece of advice to new Moms?
A: Don’t try to do too much. Stay focused on the little moments because they will pass by before you know it. I know everyone says that, but it’s true. Get in as many smiles, kisses and hugs as you can.

Q: How would you describe your parenting style?
A: Hands off, hugs ready and available. I like to let Grayson explore things on his own, figure things out, get dirty, stick leaves in his mouth, even fall down on occasion. I’m always watching in case something he encounters will actually hurt him, and I’m there for him when he needs me. I don’t want to be an over-protective parent.

Q: Share something you have learned about yourself since you became a Mom.
A: When I became a mom, I learned how much a baby changes your priorities. I learned how easy it was, suddenly, to put my own needs aside. I learned how hard it was to be a mom (it’s never-ending). I learned that for the most part, I knew what I was doing. Children are a mirror of ourselves, so I learned to be more patient, and to be more careful of what I say and how I say it.
