5 Fun Kid Stops in San Diego

sd5

Right before school kicked in, we took a trip south to visit San Diego. In 4 days and 3 nights we found some great spots to hang out with the kiddos, that were fun for the whole family!

sd

1. Seaport Village – Take a nice walk along the San Diego Bay and take in the beautiful views as you make your way along Harbor Drive to Seaport Village. We began our walk with brunch in the Gaslamp district before walking around Petco Park (home of the San Diego Padres), then toward the water and up to Seaport Village’s cute strip of shops and restaurants, centered around a gazebo where we ran into some live music and fun vibes. Keep walking north of Seaport Village and you’ll run into the USS Midway Museum at Navy Pier.

2. Sea World San Diego – It’s the perfect combination of sea life and thrill rides. The boys enjoyed several up close encounters with the animals, and also got their fix of amusement park rides. We went to the park on a Monday and while it was busier than we expected, wait times were easy and we covered the entire park and took in the dolphin show too.

3. Coronado Beach – Out of all my visits to San Diego over the years, one place I had yet to visit was Coronado Island, so I decided to make the short trek across the bridge to check out Coronado Beach. The sand is powdery fine and soft, it’s littered with gorgeous gold flecks. There’s a huge beach area before you get to the water and there’s plenty of room to play. My children got a kick out of searching for seashells in the sand and the occasional navy air craft that would pass overhead.

4. Mission Valley – We stayed in the Mission Valley area where there are many options for accommodations. The location is central to so many places and was very convenient to downtown and the Gaslamp district, Mission Bay, Balboa Park and Old Town. There are many of the familiar strip mall stores and restaurants, and an open air shopping mall to hang out at too. The boys couldn’t resist taking their turn at the lifesize chess board at the mall.

5. Mission Bay – Our last stop on this San Diego visit was to Mission Bay. We rented a surrey to check out the sights and rode it along the Bay. All that pedaling worked up our appetites, so we walked toward Mission Beach where we enjoyed yummy burgers at Coaster Bar & Grill. The grill is located right off Mission Beach and across from Belmont Park. Belmont Park has a fair number of amusement rides and fair food, plus a fun arcade for the kids to burn off some energy.

Fun SoCal Stops with Kids

IMG_0340

On our recent trip to SoCal (we live in NorCal), the main focus of our trip was Anaheim aka Disneyland! There’s may ways to enjoy Orange County and while a trip to the Disneyland Resort and theme parks can easily fill more than a few days, there is more to do and see in the area. A couple of my good girlfriends live in the area and since we were there… we visited with them, and they also provided the ideas on a couple of family-friendly fun spots the kids were sure to enjoy.

First up the Irvine Spectrum Center. Located in Irvine, this is essentially an outdoor shopping mall…BUT it has so much more. Beyond the shops, there’s an awesome (free) outdoor play area resembling a pirate ship.

There’s also a Carousel, Giant Wheel and Kiddie Train. You have to purchase tickets to enjoy these attractions, we chose to test out the carousel.

And — when it comes to food choices. There are several restaurants at the center, from fast, food-court style options to casual sit down and more sophisticated dining too. We ended up at Red Robin, hence the balloons! I spied more than few sweet/dessert spots too.

My friends both commented how it’s a nice place to hang out in the summer when the days are hot and the nights stay warm. There’s lots of room for the kids to roam and open grass areas too.

What visit to Southern California would be complete without a trek to the beach! Being there at the end of February, you never know if it’ll be warm enough to go, but since we had rockin’ weather, we decided to bust out the swimwear and hit the coast. My friend recommended Corona del Mar Beach at Inspiration Point, which is in the Newport Beach area.

IMG_0365

It was a beautiful stretch of sand, and the waves were perfect for our toddlers. Since technically it was still winter, there wasn’t much of a crowd and we had lots of room to play. The water was cold, but you know kids, they don’t care! So they got their feet wet, jumped some waves and played around. Good thing Dad was game to go in… I got to sit in the sand and just watch.

There is a parking lot adjacent to the beach, but we just parked along Ocean Blvd. It is a residential street, but we found free parking no problem. We also got in some good exercise because it’s a very long steep staircase down from the street down to the beach and then the climb back up too.

Overall, so glad we got the chance to explore off the Disneyland strip and enjoy more of what SoCal has to offer.

What Would You Do? Target Plays In-Store Porn

target

There’s a story that’s been making headlines and catching the attention of not just Moms but everybody here in the Bay Area this past week. Apparently, unsuspecting shoppers were “treated” to the sounds of PORN while in a San Jose Target store. Read the San Jose Mercury’s story HERE. Long story short, the store’s PA system began playing audio from what seemed like must be a porn film starring a couple women…for 15 MINUTES! 15 minutes is a looooong time! Coincidentally (or not) the store also happened to be packed with Moms and their young children for a special Mommy & Me Day. SERIOUSLY!

It seems some parents instinct was to leave their shopping carts, grab their kids and get out of the store. On the other hand, some stayed and video taped the incident, and others have commented about employees were laughing at the “sexual soundtrack,” rather then trying to make it stop.

Now, as a Mom to two young boys, I’m asking myself what would I do!?!? I mean you never really know until you’re in the situation right…but my hunch would be that I would need a minute to process what was actually happening and probably be a little bit embarrassed, but if it persisted  (as in this case), I would like to think I’d probably just try to keep it moving and act like it’s no big deal. I say that because one rule of parenting is to ignore and not give special attention to the undesirable – like whining and tantrums, because that will actually trigger our little ones to repeat those behaviors or continue to use said material to get a reaction. Plus, while porn is one thing, sex isn’t necessarily something you want to label as bad or wrong, it’s just not a forced lesson you want to be prompted to teach and explain during a trip to Target.

However, I think my bigger fear would be that my 2 and 3 years old boys would probably start to mimic and imitate the sounds they hear! At this point they have no idea what porn is and should have nothing in their memory bank to associate those types of (sex) sounds with, but what a situation to find yourself in!

So, tell me…if you were shopping with the kids at Target or any store, when moans, groans and a “sexual soundtrack” started blaring into your ears via the establishments PA system, What would you do?

Meanwhile Target is looking into the incident to figure out who’s responsible and how it all happened.

Holiday Gift Guide for Mom, Dad and Kids

Christmas-gifts-under-tree

This fall I took on the daunting task of putting together holiday gift guides for everyone and everything on your list… and presented them on my show. Shopping may seem fun and easy, but it’s actually pretty tough to select items and make suggestions to make sure you cover all the demographics and range of tastes for all kinds of individuals! All that being said, I think I did a pretty good job to help someone out with some “bright” gift ideas….

I’m a Mom…I Shop Online!

Online shopping

I’ll admit it..I’m an avid internet user. I’m never far from being online and it’s rare that I ever get to totally disconnect…and since I’ve become a Mom, the way I use the internet and it’s value to me have most definitely changed. Prior to motherhood, I would occasionally make a purchase online, usually just browse, but still physically go to a store and make my purchases. However, when I learned I was expecting, the internet sort of became my best friend… I turned to the world wide web to research things about being pregnant and what to expect, read up on all that an expecting Mom needs to know, to be “ready.” Then, comes the baby registry and figuring out what products and purchases I would need to make for my newest arrival.

Well, once that kicked into full gear, I was constantly online doing my research to determine what products would fit me best. Then I’d hunt for where I’d get the best deal, calculating shipping costs and weighing the pros and cons between similar products, but different brands. It was at this point that I truly became an online shopper. I think I had sort of resisted before because it seems like every time you buy online with a new site, you have to create and account and all that…I HATE THAT! What I do LOVE about online shopping is that I can browse at my leisure and it’s easy to see if they have the sizes and styles I want available right away, plus it all comes straight to my door. As a Mom, that certainly makes things easier.

Ebates

Okay, well this post isn’t going to tell you how to avoid creating accounts at all the places you shop online, but what I do want to talk about is how I would make sure I got a return on my purchases! I started using EBATES. It’s an online “rebate” site where, you simply log on and let them redirect you to the site where you want to shop. There’s a search box at the top right side of the page and each time I wanted to purchase an item, I’d check to see if they were affiliated with ebates, before making my purchase. Sure, it can be pennies on the dollar..but those pennies add up. I mean, you can’t expect to get a huge amount back, but when I ordered the nursery furniture and higher priced items, you get DOLLARS back!

The “rebated” money goes straight into my paypal on a quarterly basis, and it makes me to feel good to know I’m getting something back, no matter how small the amount. To date I’ve gotten more than $130 back and I’ve been a member for 2 years. I don’t know how much I spent to get that much back, but $130 IS $130… 🙂 Now that the holiday shopping season is upon us, you can bet anything I buy online will go through ebates first…and hopefully be adding more pocket change to my account! So, before you make your next online buy…make sure to EBATES first!!! Click HERE to sign up!!

Yes, I’m THAT Mom

Screen shot 2014-04-20 at 12.00.34 PM
If you’ve ever been on the Babies “R” Us or Toys “R” Us websites and the image above looks familiar…it’s because “Yes, I’m THAT Mom.” One of the most common comments I hear these days (everyone around me is growing their family), from my circle of friends and family is that they saw me online doing a product “review,” for a Medela breast pump no doubt! 😉 Then, I am often times told “you look really familiar,” when meeting new people. Well, chances are if you have young children or have been shopping for baby shower gifts, you may’ve come across one of the hundreds of product videos I’ve done for those sites.
Screen shot 2014-04-20 at 12.02.38 PM Screen shot 2014-04-24 at 8.39.53 PM

I actually started hosting these videos in my pre-Mommy days, and it’s inadvertently proved to be a great crash course in learning and navigating all the baby stuff I’ve now needed and used when I official took on the Mom role! From playards to activity gyms, strollers, scooters, toys, tubs, breast pumps, baby monitors and more, I had a true hands on opportunity to learn all about them.

BTW, the videos are (technically) not “reviews” either…I’m really just giving the product descriptions, very similar to what you can read on the page or on the packaging. The videos are very helpful though if you’d rather have someone tell you about the items and also get an idea of the size/proportions of the products. I’m not sure how many of my videos are still in “rotation,” but if you want to press play and check some of mine out, here are a few links to visit the product pages, and you can find the video players about halfway down the page.
