Maddy Wear: Bibs Beyond Basic

maddywear

A bib is a bib is a bib right!?!? WRONG! Sure, we use them on our little ones to catch all the excess drool or to attempt and make feeding time a little less messy…but somehow, sometimes, whatever we were trying to avoid is unavoidable! Well, I came across a very cool take on the traditional bib. It’s trendy, functional, unique, reversible and handmade. Did I mention this bib is also eco-friendly and easy to wash!?!?! It’s called Maddy Wear and I came across it after a good friend of mine raved about how GREAT it is!!

cupcakemaddy

The bibs are super stylish and come in all kinds of fun prints for a wide variety of characters! I mean Maddy Wear is more like a fun accessory you can add to your baby’s wardrobe, then just some random bib you’re using to take care of the “dirty” work. These tank-style bibs do not need to be pulled over the head and have snaps at each shoulder and along one side, to easily get on your little one and secure, so they aren’t ripping it off their necks and tearing the velcro fastener apart…like with a typical bib. Designed and made by Amanda Thompson of Seattle, Washington, with “100% love… “The bibs have no designated front and are reversible. One bib can be used four times, which supports an eco-friendly lifestyle. An additional bonus to the 4 in 1 aspect is the need to only pack one for a day outing.”

Maddy Wear bibs are made in 6, 12 and 18 month sizes (S,M,L) and are designed to have a “larger fit” to be comfortable over clothing and span many months as your child grows. Plus – beyond the bibs, Maddy Wear also offers burps cloths, child aprons and blankets too. I love all of the fun fabrics she works with and if you want a truly unique gift for a baby shower or 1st birthday…this definitely is a good, useful idea! 😉

Pediped for Your Baby’s Feet

pediped2
Washable and waterproof are the two keywords that caught my attention when checking out “The pediped Footwear System.” Up until now, my main concerns when finding footwear for my son has been color, style and fit. So, now that I’ve had the chance to put a pair of pediped’s to the test, I’m realizing there’s so much more to consider when (out)fitting your baby’s feet! I mentioned earlier that “washable” caught my attention when it came to this brand of shoes…I mean once you hit the toddler stage, you realize the messes can become bigger and much more unpredictable, so keeping things clean or being able to easily clean them is important for longevity. The waterproof feature appealed to me because I need versatile shoes for my boy! Not only does that factor in to “accidents,” but for me, living in South Florida, it’s nice to have him sport a pair of kicks that can go from the playground to the pool and not lose shape! On any given day, an outing can consist of park, store and beach – or some combo like that, so it makes my life easier to have one shoe that works for all “occasions” on the bottom of my baby’s feet!

And — that’s one of the thing’s the company stresses about its line of shoes, “the next best thing to bare feet.” As a Mother, I put a lot of thought into classes, activities and nutrition when it comes to the healthy development of my children…BUT I shouldn’t forget the feet, especially since there’s been various foot issues which run in our family! The feet are the foundation for our bodies, and we need to treat them good, so we can get as many miles out of them as possible over a lifetime. Pair that with that fact, that our little ones are growing so quickly, so healthy feet should be a top priority!

The pair of pediped’s Raef sampled are called: Flex Rio in Charcoal Black

Rio is an Adventure Line style made of Clarino and mesh upper to provide maximum protection while remaining light and breathable. Engineered to get wet, this shoe can be tossed in the washing machine after a long day of great adventures.

pediped1
He took to them immediately! They are lightweight and well-constructed with a rubber sole that keeps it comfy on the bottom and protects the toes too. If you have a toddler, that’s a  big deal, I can’t even tell you how many stumbles, tumbles and (voluntary) falls happen in the span of a day! The velcro strap makes them easy to put on and take off, and hopefully soon he’ll be able to do that all by himself… I also liked that each shoe’s tongue is attached to one side and there are no socks required for these kicks.

And for me, it’s a NICE bonus, that these shoes are made with eco-friendly material and approved by the American Podiatric Medical Association, for promoting healthy foot development. Plus they are pretty stylish, and come in great color combo’s too…so all my bases are covered. I’m sure he’ll thank me later! 😉

ANEIROS Vehicle Child Seat System

isaiahaneiros

My youngest son and I recently played the “starring” roles in a video created for a crowd funding campaign. The project seeking funding is a vehicle child safety seat called “ANEIROS.” All too often we hear about (preventable) tragedies where a child is mistakenly left behind in a hot car, and ends up losing their life as a result of vehicular heat stroke… Well, the ANIEROS is designed to save those children. It effectively integrates with a vehicles alarm and electrical wiring, giving it the capability to alert a parent or caretaker of a forgotten child, activating the cars alarm, triggering the air condition system to cool down an overheating child, and much more. The system can control and activate the car’s lights, ignition, air conditioner, alarm and door locks.

In the video, Isaiah and I “acted out” everyday scenes to show how the child seat system would work IF a parent or caregiver happened to forget a quiet or sleeping child in the car. It’s easy to think it would never happen to you…but I’m sure the families who have suffered this tragic fate, never imagined it happening to them either. The ANEIROS has a full US patent and its creator needs funding help, to further develop it and get it on the market, and start saving lives. So, I encourage you to please watch the video and visit the Indiegogo crowd funding page >> http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/aneiros-vehicle-child-seat-system If anything, please help spread the word to your social networks about this unique child seat system, if it can save just one child’s life, then it’s worth having on the market! The ANEIROS Indiegogo campaign runs now through April 18, 2014.

Baby Food Mash Up

I have a couple girlfriend’s who I’ve known since childhood and we all happened to give birth within a six week span last year, so this year, as our babies grow, we are able to share and maneuver through some of the “baby steps” together! So, as our babies crossed the 6 months mark and began taking in “solids,” I get this random text with a photo and link attached to it for the NUK Mash & Serve Bowl. My friend went on to say how much she had already fallen in love with hers and how easy it is to use, clean and take with you on outings! Soon after my other girlfriend also acquired her own masher and then, singing its praises. Well, I still haven’t gotten one, and now I wish I had. I think I’m at the stage where it feels like I should’ve gotten it earlier, because now I don’t feel like I’ll get enough use out of it. I mean after all, I do have a Baby Bullet and to be honest, I’ve been buying ready made baby food – don’t judge me! However, I am pretty impressed with how much my friends seem to enjoy theirs and so, I figured I’d share this masher with you.

IMG_0899 IMG_0831

As you can see from the photos, this masher can smash and blend pretty much any food you’d like to serve to baby. Even without ever having used it, I love that you could easily take a small portion of your meal and quickly get it ready for baby. I have tried making larger quantities of baby food at one time to store, and if you’d rather mash as you go, this works! Plus, you can serve it right out of the bowl and clean up is nice and easy…no blender blades and parts to disassemble and wash. The other benefit of this NUK product that my friend pointed out is it’s portability. It’s small enough to toss in the bag and take with you, so if you’re on the go, this works!

If you watched the video, you’ll see how easy it is to mash up not only fruits and steamed veggies, but you can use it on meats like chicken and beef…it works with rice and oatmeal too. So if you’re looking for a quick and easy way to make healthy & nutritious food for your tot, you may need to check out the NUK Mash & Serve Bowl…the price point isn’t bad either.

Philips AVENT…Bottles with Style!

10964-SCF683_USES_002380_OL.indd

For a first time parent, when it comes time to think about the “feeding” options for an arriving newborn, and how to properly accomplish the task with success, having all the right bottles, pumps, nipples, warmers, sterilizers, etc… It can be very overwhelming. Sure, you see lots of ads and brand names may sound familiar, but you really don’t know what is going to work and/or be right for the baby until you can actually try the various methods and products for feeding! In my case, I did a little research and thought about what bottles I had seen a lot of my friends and people in general using – you start to pay a lot more attention to all this stuff when you’re pregnant, and the brand that stuck out to me, was the Philips AVENT line of bottles. My original intent had been to breastfeed and pump (didn’t work out that way, save that for another post), and as I was filling up my registry and doing my research, I opted to go with Philips AVENT products. Luckily, my child accepted those bottles and nipples, so I didn’t have to go through a round robin of brands and products to see what would work…so yes, I would definitely recommend the line!

And — now, the #1 brand recommended by moms worldwide is adding some fun to feeding-time, by offering their Philips AVENT Natural Bottle in new designs! The special edition Philips AVENT Natural Bottle “Elephant Designs” are available exclusively at Walmart. I love the simple, yet cute designs with what I assume are a Mommy and Baby elephant pair. You may think you don’t need “bottle style,” and in all practicality, it doesn’t affect function. However, when you’re washing and looking at what seems like an endless line of bottles, a cute design can certainly add “fun” to the mix! It’s also nice for your little one to gaze at friendly faces while they feed, which is very often. Plus, if you’re out and about, it’ll be easier to spot these bottles in a crowd! 😉 The “Elephant Designs” come in a blue/green combo or pink/purple.

Elephants_Girls_Clear Elephants_Boy_Clear

The Philips AVENT Natural Bottle offers a natural way to bottle feed, with a breast-shaped nipple, making it a good choice to combine with breastfeeding. Here’s more great info, specific to the Philips AVENT Natural Bottle…with or without the designs…

Unique Design

  • Wide ‘breast-like’ shape makes it easy for baby to latch-on
  • Unique comfort petals inside nipple increase softness and flexibility without nipple collapse
  • Extra soft, flexible nipple shape mimics mom’s real breast shape
  • Advanced anti-colic system with innovative twin valve allows air into the bottle – not baby’s tummy*

Additional Features

  • BPA Free
  • Available in polypropylene
  • Ergonomic shape makes it easy to hold in any direction – even for baby’s tiny hands
  • Interchangeable with most Philips AVENT feeding products
  • Fewer parts make it simple to use and easy to clean

Toys Trends for 2014

kidkraft-savannah-dollhouse

Supersized and classic toys, innovative RC vehicles, custom-built creations and zombie-inspired playthings are among the top industry trends of 2014, according to experts at the Toy Industry Association (TIA). The trade group unveiled this year’s hottest playthings during a packed seminar for media and buyers at TIA’s 111th American International Toy Fair.

“Personalization and open-ended play are definitely the buzz words of 2014,” said Adrienne Appell, TIA trend expert. “Whether kids are building with classic blocks, designing their own dolls, playing in virtual worlds, or ‘mashing up’ play patterns, toymakers are giving them more freedom than ever to play exactly how they want. Best of all, these value-packed playthings come at a variety of price points – we are seeing a great selection of both splurge-worthy items and very affordable toys to fit any budget.”

A summary of the six top trends follows:

LARGER THAN LIFE
Large-sized toys are becoming increasingly common in just about every category, from plush and play sets to RCs and building toys. As a counter-balance to the micro-sized trend seen in years past, these toys engage kids in imaginative role-play activities and make impressive gifts for special occasions. They don’t all come with hefty price tags, either – the value-conscious shopper will find many “BIG” toys at affordable prices.

Includes: dollhouses; inflatable toys; cars, trucks and trains; plush; and baby doll carriages, cribs and other role-play accessories.

RC RAMPAGE
Playtime will shift into high gear thanks to an influx of innovative remote-controlled vehicles for various ages and at varying price points. Older kids with a ‘need for speed’ will have plenty of options to choose from, including helicopter RCs and vehicles that launch projectiles. Animal-themed and licensed RCs based on popular entertainment properties will engage younger children and promote active and imaginative play.

Includes: traditional RCs with added features, such as the ability to fly higher, drive faster or launch projectiles.

FULL “STEAM” AHEAD!
Educational toys, games and crafts that teach kids STEAM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) are heating up in the toy aisle and getting kids of all ages, interests and abilities excited about learning. Toymakers are increasingly incorporating storytelling and other artistic components into science, engineering and building toys to get more kids than ever on board with STEAM.

Includes: hands-on science kits and innovative tech toys that inspire kids to think outside the box; and arts and crafts that introduce kids to STEAM concepts and skills at an early age.

FRIGHTFULLY FUN: ZOMBIES, MONSTERS AND MORE!
Vampires were hot … but now zombies and monsters are all the rage, thanks to a rise in popularity of zombie-themed movies, TV shows and video games. Ghoulish action figures and dolls with relatable characters and back-stories are less frightening for younger kids, while older boys and girls will get a kick out of ‘gross out’ toys. These toys not only have the ability to transport children to mysterious worlds – they also teach them that it’s OK to be different and stand out from the crowd.

Includes: classic toys with a zombie twist; gothic-style fashion dolls and accessories; detailed figures for older collectors; and trivia games for fans of popular movies and TV shows, like The Walking Dead.

RETRO / BACK-TO-BASICS
Retro and back-to-basics trend is alive and well this year thanks to a huge abundance of classic toys and games slated to hit store shelves. Today’s parents and grandparents fondly remember these playthings from their own childhoods and are excited to share them with the little ones in their lives.

Includes: re-releases and refreshed retro toys; low-tech / back-to-basics toys that reflect the enduring popularity of classic play patterns over time; and old-school family games that foster intergenerational play.

CUSTOM BUILT
2014 will take building to a whole new level. In addition to building and construction toys, this trend extends across several toy categories – from arts and crafts to action figures – and encompasses playthings that allow kids to create, customize and personalize to reflect their unique tastes, styles and imaginations.

Includes two sub-trends: “Mash-up” toys, which incorporate many uses or ways to play in a single toy or game, giving kids the freedom to choose how they’d like to play; and “Fashion Forward” toys, which include DIY sets that allow kids to create their own accessories, fashion dolls that can be styled in a personalized way and realistically-designed dollhouses and building / play sets.

Biggest Baby Shower – Miami

Any first time parent can relate to the overwhelming task of figuring out the ins and outs of baby products, trying to pick a stroller, baby furniture, create a registry, etc… And — if you’re ever cruised the aisles of baby stuff at the stores without doing your homework, it can be a mind-blowing experience! Well, that’s where the “Biggest Baby Shower” comes in. The event, hosted by Big City Moms, features more than 100 of the best baby and parenting companies in the industry and the “expo” is jam-packed with demonstrations, sampling, products, pampering, educational seminars, etc… you name it!

IMG_0794

So, when I heard the Biggest Baby Shower was making a Miami stop, I just had to check it out. My first impression was tons of great stuff going on, and although I’m not exactly a new Mommy anymore, I’m not that far removed…BUT I was amazed at all the new stuff that’s come out since I had my 2 in the 53 week span of July 3, 2012 – July 10, 2013. From new generations of strollers and baby bottles to prenatal drinks to help you get the proper nutrition and folic acid intake while pregnant! I almost felt like I need to get pregnant again just to be able to use some of this stuff…but uh, nah, not right now!

IMG_0814

Anyhow, one of my favorite features of the event was the long row of infant travel systems and strollers. There were brands I had previously researched, and others I had never even heard of… like Joovy, Armadillo, Uppa Baby, Chicco, Orbit Baby, and many more. They were all there available to test drive, with product experts on hand to explain all the features AND answer any and all questions you might have about the different products. Actually all the products there had very knowledgeable reps on hand who took the time to talk with you and familiarize you with what was what and what this and that were for! I mean ultimately, you’re going to have to sort of “assume” or guess which products are going to work for you and your baby, and sometimes it’s trial and error before finding the right pacifier, bottle or stroller, but if you educate yourself ahead of time, or really decide your needs and what’s most important to you, going to this event can help take a lot of the guesswork out and lead you to make an informed decision!

IMG_0816 IMG_0812

Some of the highlights of my rounds around the ballroom were…

  • A (real life) mom who swears by Dr. Smiths Diaper Ointment. She couldn’t stop telling me how wonderful the stuff is and how well it’s worked for her and her children.
  • I sampled Bundle, an organic prenatal beverage …the “Kale” flavor. Hey, folic acid in a bottle! 😉
  • The ladies at the Philips Avent display showed off some of their new bottles to me, while explaining the difference between the different versions they offer. I currently use the traditional bottles for Isaiah.
  • I stopped by the Pediped table, where I saw some of the cutest footwear for babies and toddlers. Shoes are important for growing feet!
  • Lots of organic baby food on hand – Ella’s, Earth’s Best and Happy Family, which are all popular with my babes.IMG_0815

However, I MUST mention the gift bags…these things were beyond major!!! Talk about filled to the brim and completely stuffed with diapers, wipes, bottles, lotions, feeding containers, etc…. The fabulous gift bags were overflowing, stocked full of great products and not just tiny sample size giveaways! If the “admission fee” is a hang up for you, this bag is worth way more than that….so, TOTALLY worth it! I mean seriously, it weighed so much, that I wasn’t sure my arm was going to make it back to the car. So if you’re expecting, want to be expecting or have a newborn at home, and want to get a more intimate, closeup view of all things baby – not in a typical retail environment, go to http://babyshower.bigcitymoms.com and find out when the “Biggest Baby Shower” is making a stop in a city by you!

Product Review: Joovy 360 Jogging Stroller

Post written by Daniella M. for 53 weeks

Screen shot 2014-01-29 at 8.04.51 PM

I was given the Joovy 360 jogging stroller as a gift from my brother and sister-in-law when my daughter was born in 2012. This stroller was my salvation! It helped me keep my sanity AND loose that extra baby weight in about 4 months. I have to mention that another contributing factor to the weight loss was that I was able to nurse. Ultimately, she refused the bottle, so what was initially intended as 6 months of nursing turned into a year.  This is a lifetime for a runner, and delayed my ability to go back to trail running, which requires a bit more freedom with time. The Joovy stroller helped me get outside and get moving, even if it was just doing laps around a local park.

IMG_0481

First off, this jogger is like the bat mobile! It has incredible suspension and is very easy to maneuver. I have a park near my house, which by zigging and zagging, I was able to create various loops where I could bust out a mile. It was not exciting, but I was extremely grateful and relieved to have been able to get a run in even if it ended up being 2 or so miles with lots and LOTS of breaks.  Another great feature is the huge canopy with a window on the roof which helps both entertain your baby and lets you keep on eye on them during your run. Depending on the position of the sun, I would recline her all the way back and she would be able to look up at the trees or at me peeking down at her. Also, the storage compartment at the bottom is large which is very useful if you want to go on a run, but know that you may have to stop and feed the baby or change a diaper. I was able to fit an all weather picnic blanket in the basket, and plop down to feed her whenever I needed. If you live in a city like Los Angeles (like me), where every commute is a minimum of 20 minutes, then time out of the house quickly adds up, so the more you are able to bring with you to make you and the baby comfortable, the better. This also came in handy when I would go for a run and then drop by the farmers market to pick up some fresh produce. Another great feature is that it has little mesh pockets on either side where I could drop my phone into and play white noise whenever she needed a little extra help sleeping. The stroller also came with a covering that you can use when the weather isn’t all that great but you need to get outside. It protects the baby on windy days (especially if you use it down by the beach) or from light rain. I do, however, recommend airing it out to get rid of the plastic smell. Lastly, it has a great compartment near the handle bar where I could fit my keys, sunblock, water, etc., so everything was handy during my runs.

Screen shot 2014-01-29 at 8.05.05 PM

I would say  the only drawback is that it is huge which ultimately is fine since it offers that extra storage. It doesn’t stand on its own either, so storing it at home is a pain, and it can be cumbersome to fit in the back of your vehicle. However, once you are at your spot, then it is a first class ride for you and your child!

I would recommend this stroller to any new mom especially with it’s great price point. Although the BOB Strollers have come down a bit, this one is a great option and I was very happy with it.
