Boys love trucks and my two are especially fond of fire trucks, so when we had the chance to visit a close family friend at his fire station, we jumped at the opportunity. We stopped at Fire Station 4 for the Oakland Fire Department on Memorial Day, and the boys got their very own tour of the station from top to bottom. It is one of the oldest, if not the oldest station for OFD…the building dates back to 1909! On our tour we got to look around the firefighters sleeping quarters, checked out their kitchen and even toured their gym and yard area.

However, the big attraction here, besides meeting some local heroes…was the trucks! We learned about the two kinds of fire vehicles at this station, the engine which holds all the water and hoses, and the truck which has the ladders and equipment. Our Uncle Jono educated the boys on the different types of equipment on the truck and explained to them what they are used for and how they are used, and my boys were super into it. I was actually pretty impressed about how much they already knew, whether it be from programs they have watched or books we have read about firefighters and emergency vehicles. Nonetheless, their questions were rapid fire and endless….

We’ll probably have to chalk this one up as one of the best outings to date, the boys sat in the cab of the fire truck (with the lights on), they were able to walk the length of the ladders and try on some of the gear too!

It was wonderful to see my boy’s’ big smiles and we’re so thankful (and lucky) we got to get a behind the scenes look into the fire station! Press Play below for a few more scenes from our visit…
